Commandant’s Report December 2015 Happy Holiday Season, members! Sr. Vice Commandant, Dominic D’Alessandro has asked that everyone is reminded that our Annual Toys-4-Tots Holiday Dinner will follow the December General Meeting. Please note that the meeting start time is an early one, 1800. The dinner will follow the abbreviated meeting (approximately 1900). As always, the cost of the dinner is 1 unwrapped new toy for the T4T campaign. Dominic needs a head count for the caterer, so please contact Dominic at 215-205-1713 or at [email protected]. And, speaking of our Sr. Vice D’Alessandro, thank you and congratulations on another awesome Birthday Ball. A great time was had by all.

The Toys-4-Tots campaign is in full swing and any assistance you can provide would be greatly appreciated. Scuttlebutt 4

The members of the Color Guard were Bob Spano, Con McGinley, Wayne Williams, Jack Kelly and Bill Kinney. Bill Kinney also mentioned the upcoming dinner of the Delaware County Veterans Memorial Association scheduled for 12 November 2015 at the Springfield Country Club. The Detachment had purchased two tables for this event, and all those seats have been spoken for, but if anyone had a desire to go, Bill asked that they contact him after the meeting. Bill Kinney also reviewed some of the events scheduled for Veterans Day, 11 November 2015, including the parade in Media, PA. He also mentioned the annual Christmas luncheon of the National Realty Corporation, which is scheduled for 18 December 2015. This company collects toys for the Toys for Tots program. A Color Guard is needed for this event, and after the luncheon, the toys will be loaded onto trucks to be taken to the USMC Reserve Center in Folsom, PA. Paymaster: Bob Spano went over the paymaster’s report as of 31 October 2015. He briefly reviewed the income and expenses for the month, and he also reviewed the list of organizations to be considered for donations later in the meeting. George Boyajian made a motion to accept the paymaster’s report as received. Dan Luty seconded the motion and the motion passed. Committee Reports: Adopt-a- Highway: John Burfete reported that the final Adopt-a-Highway event had been held on 11 October 2015, and it was a successful event. John Burfete also mentioned that he has resigned as the Adopt-a-Highway chairman, so a replacement chairman is needed. He mentioned that he would be available to work with the new chairman, once that person is named. Communications: John Burfete mentioned that it had been a busy month, and he had forwarded a number of communications and publicity items to a variety of news sources, as well as e-mail messages to the membership. Awards: Jim Herbst reminded committee chairmen to submit names of members to him for those members to be recognized for their contributions to the Detachment during the year. Americanism: Although Earle Drake was not able to be present, he had submitted a written report. Earle Drake reported that an Americanism program was presented to the fourth grade class at the St. Norbert’s School in Paoli, PA on 30 October 2015. The presenters were Jim Mulhern, who spoke of the War of 1812, and Dan Fitzpatrick, who played flag related bugle calls. On Veterans Day, 11 November, the team of Earle Drake, Jim Mulhern and Dan Fitzpatrick will be presenting Certificates of Appreciation to the elderly veterans at Highgate of Paoli Assisted Living Home in Paoli. PA. Jim Mulhern was planning to give a presentation regarding his experiences as a convoy commander in Viet Nam. On 12 November 2015, the team will be making a Flag History presentation at the Chester County Youth Center. This facility is a school for court assigned youths. Color Guard: Wayne Williams provided a report on those who served at the Beirut Memorial as well as the play at Rosemont College. He mentioned the Color Guard for the Marine Corps Birthday Ball will consist of Joe Conigliaro, Jim Herbst, Jack Kelly and Paul Donohue. The Color Guard for the dinner on 12 November 2015 for the Delaware County Veterans Memorial Association will consist of Wayne Williams, Jack Kelly, Paul Donohue and Jim Herbst. Wayne Williams mentioned that he would not be available for the events on Veterans Day, 11 November, but that members will have to handle those events on their own. Honor Guard: Ben Sides reported that the Honor Guard had had a busy month in October. There were twenty-three funerals for deceased military veterans during the month. The year-to-date count is now at 143 funerals for deceased military veterans who have been honored by the Honor Guard.

Marine Corps League General Meeting Minutes – 2 November 2015

Commandant: Commandant Paul Ferguson opened the meeting at 1930. The regular opening ceremonies were conducted. Officers present were Commandant Paul Ferguson, Sr. Vice Commandant Dominic D’Alessandro, Jr. Vice Commandant Jack McLeod, Judge Advocate Bernie McGinley, Paymaster Bob Spano, Adjutant Jack Kelly, Chaplain Chris Bush, Sergeant-at-Arms Charles (Bud) Davis, Service Officer Con McGinley, Director Paul Donohue, Director Bill Kinney, and Jr. Past Commandant Jim Herbst. Minutes: George Boyajian made a motion to accept the minutes of the 6 October 2015 general meeting as published in the Scuttlebutt. Several members seconded the motion and the motion passed. Officer Reports: Commandant: Paul Ferguson mentioned that there would be a five minute meeting after the general meeting for those members involved in the Toys for Tots drive. Boxes for the Toys for Tots program were now available and could be picked up after the general meeting. Sr. Vice Commandant: Dominic D’Alessandro mentioned that the Detachment’s Marine Corps Birthday Ball would be held this Friday, 6 November 2015, at the Paxon Hollow Country Club. This evening is the last night to make reservations for the Ball. Dominic D’Alessandro also mentioned that the December 2015 general meeting will be the Detachment’s annual Toys for Tots dinner meeting. The meeting will be held on Tuesday, 1 December 2015, and the price for the dinner is an unwrapped new toy. The meeting will begin at 1800 and the dinner will follow at approximately 1900. Signup sheets were distributed through the meeting to arrive at a count of those attending. Jr. Vice Commandant: Jack McLeod reported that on a year-to-date basis, more than $166,000.00 has been collected in the Help Us Help Others (HUHO) Campaign. This was compared to the amount of $151,000.00 that was collected in the entire year of 2014. In the past weekend, at an event at only one store, about $2,300.00 was collected. Jack McLeod mentioned that there was one more weekend of collection activity, but it may be again just at a single store. One other store that was scheduled may not be available. He also mentioned that the program book for the Ball is ready for proofreading and will be at the printer for publication shortly. The program book will be ready for the Ball on Friday evening. Chaplain: Chris Bush reported that Wes Tomlinson and Jim Friel had both been hospitalized recently. Chris Bush had visited both men and both were reported to be making some progress in their recovery. Adjutant: Jack Kelly reported that two letters of appreciation had been received for donations made by the Detachment. One letter was from the Department of Veterans Affairs in Coatesville, PA and the second letter received was from the Semper Fi Fund in Oceanside, CA. A donation to the Detachment was received from a family in honor of our former member, Ollie McGraw, who had passed away recently. Also, a card of thanks was received from the family of a deceased veteran who had been honored at his gravesite by the Detachment’s Honor Guard. Service Officer: Con McGinley mentioned that the next bingo game at the Coatesville Medical Center is scheduled for Thursday, 12 November 2015. Director Kinney: Bill Kinney reported that the Detachment’s Color Guard had presented the Colors the day before at Rosemont College before the one act play entitled D-Day, Again.

Adopt-a-Highway Committee Chairman Opportunity November 2, 2015

Leaguers, this is to inform you that I have resigned the position of Chairman of the Detachment’s Adopt-a-Highway Committee. My resignation necessitates that a Leaguer steps up and, with the appointment by the Commandant, assume the position. This is a rewarding position that requires little effort on the Chairman’s part but results in a big return for the Detachment in the way of publicity for community service. The Detachment has participated in the Adopt-a-Highway program for more than 20 years. On one day of April, June, August and October—just four timesa year-- it polices Bishop Hollow Road in Newtown Square from West Chester Pike to Gradyville Road, just short of a 2 mile stretch. I divided the road into 4 relatively equal segments which surprisingly are all downhill.Ideally, you will have at least two Leaguers for each segment with one on each side of the road. But the more you have, the shorter the work. Our program is sponsored by the PA Department of Transportation’s Media office on S. Middletown Road (Penn DOT). For the most part, all of the implements of the program are provided by Penn DOT. It supplies the safety signs, work gloves, safety vests, and trash bags. The Detachment supplies grabbers, coffee, coffee cups, sweetener and sugar, creamer, stirrers, napkins, and donuts for those who wish to stay around for a few minutes after the trash has been collected and disposed. It also provides cooler and bottled water. The Chairman is responsible for storing the Detachment’s equipment described above. Historically, I chose Sunday morning for the program. We have an arrangement with the Wolff Company on Bishop Hollow to reconnoiter there in the parking lot. For me, each of the four events went like this:

1. Contact Dan Luty to put Adopt-a-Highway in the edition of the Upcoming Events section of the Scuttlebutt published immediately before the event.

2. Monday before the event, send a group email to the Detachment asking for volunteers. I’ll provide a sample. 3. At your leisure, load your car with the Adopt-a-Highway equipment, i.e., the boxes with the gloves, vests, etc., the 2

safety signs, the box with the coffee and snacks, the cooler and water. 4. Friday before the event, send a reminder group email to the Detachment asking for volunteers. 5. Saturday, get sweets. I usually got a box of 12 Entenmann’s donuts. 6. Sunday morning around 8:00 am, hang the safety signs on the poles with the Penn DOT Adopt-a-Highway sign at each

end of our Bishop Hollow Road territory This takes about 10-15 minutes. 7. Then, meet the volunteers in the Wolff Company parking lot and assign them segments of the road to police. Ideally, you

need 8 or more volunteers…2 for each segment. 8. You can either have the volunteers leave the bags of trash on the side of the road and notify Penn DOT which will pick

them up the next day. Instead of that, I chose to put the bags in my car and put them in the Newtown Township dumpster at the Township building on Bishop Hollow Road.

9. Meet the volunteers back at the Wolff Company parking lot and enjoy coffee, donuts, and B.S.ing. Usually everyone is back by 9:00 to 9:15 am.

10. Afterwards, pick up the safety signs and go home. 11. At your convenience, make a short written report by email to the Commandant and send in a Penn DOT postcard to it

reporting on the program. I’ll provide samples.

Any money you spend on the program will be reimbursed by the Detachment. That’s it. It’s easy and you can always ask for a Leaguer to help you. After all, it is a Committee.
