Dear Parents,

We live in a world surrounded by technology. And we know that whatever field our students choose to go into as adults, their ability to succeed will increasingly depend on understanding how technology works.

But only a tiny fraction of us are learning how technology works. Fewer than half of all schools teach computer science.

That’s why our entire school is joining in on the largest learning event in history: The Hour of Code, during Computer Science Education Week (December 4-10). More than 100 million students worldwide have already tried an Hour of Code.

Our Hour of Code is making a statement that Olympia Regional Learning Academy is ready to teach these foundational 21st-century skills. To continue bringing programming activities to your students, we want to make our Hour of Code event huge.

In Room 201 from 3-4 pm (2-3 pm on Wednesday) there will be 30 seats available every day December 4th-6th and we will be doing a new hour of code activity each day. This is for students 3rd- 8th grade. Seats must be reserved to ensure we have enough devices. Please RSVP and reserve your child's spot by completing this form:

https://docs.google.com/forms/d/e/1FAIpQLScwMybNRmf8xEt8wtvbYEjneDHKrMInrmquClXP9tJjYwJVdw/viewform

This is a chance to change the future of education in Olympia.

If you are interested in volunteering please email me at [email protected].

See http://hourofcode.com/us for details, and help spread the word.

● Please note that monthly progress will be emailed out on 12/1/17. Parents (or students in grades 9-12) must respond within 48 hours.

● As a reminder to everyone about norms at ORLA for taking care of this place and each other… ORLA has multiple spaces throughout the building for working on homeschooling with students, having space for classes to break out into the hallways, and allowing onsite adults to work while students are in class. Please demonstrate ownership & respect for these spaces by cleaning up after yourself and your children as well as awareness & leadership by being aware of those around you so we can continue to have these available.

The following photos were taken over the last couple weeks by staff members who have come across the space at the end of the day creating more work for teachers, office professionals, & custodial staff. We know this is not the norm and most families are doing an excellent job and taking on far more than their own spaces in order to help out. Please make sure you are diligent in supervising children so they are not creating messes around the building that are being left for others. Also, if you notice students who are not cleaning up after themselves, please give a gentle reminder to them and let the office know if there are any problems. Thank you for understanding!

Toys need to be put away when you leave the Toddler Room.

Spills & accidents that cannot be cleaned up with Toddler Room supplies need to be reported to the office so we can work together to find a way to get it cleaned up.

Clean up tables and take care of lunch spaces as soon as you are finished.

Please be considerate of others in the building and do not “save” or “reserve” tables. If you are not using a space, at a particular time, please clear the space and invite someone to have and/or share a table with you.

● The Toddler Garden & Preschool Treehouse need Parent Leads. The 4 ongoing tasks of a Parent Lead are listed next to the sign-up sheets on the door to each of these rooms.

2 shifts/day: 8:30-12:00 & 12:00-3:15* or whenever the Parent Lead arrives/leaves ORLA

3. Communicates with ORLA Office when issues arise & need to be addressed.

4. Closes & locks the door when leaving unless handing responsibility off to another
