THE WONDERFUL WORLD OF

PINE TREESby Patricia L. Cook

Chances are good that if you live in Canada or the United States, you can look out your window and spot a pine tree or two. Pine trees are numerous in variety and land coverage in North America.

• There are about 115 species of pine trees world-wide. Pines are coniferous evergreens – meaning they produce cones and stay green all year. The Si-berian Dwarf Pine and Potosi Pinyon are the short-est pine trees, and the Sugar Pine is the tallest.• Did you know that lodgepole pines are so-named because Native Americans used the poles to hold up their tepees? Makes sense, doesn’t it? The lodgepole pine is the provincial tree of Alberta.• The small, almost golf-ball-size cones of lodge-pole pines are tan when fresh and turn gray as they age. “Hamlet” (Unrated) -- David Tennant (“Doc-tor Who”) stars as the Melancholy Dane in this critically acclaimed Royal Shakespeare Company production of the Bard’s tale of madness, murder and political intrigue. Co-starring in a riveting double-performance is Patrick Stewart (Capt. Jean-Luc Picard from “Star Trek”), who plays both Hamlet’s uncle Claudius, and the ghost of Hamlet’s mur-dered father. Tennant’s performance is both exhilarating and heart-wrenching -- which will probably come as a surprise to many who only know the Scottish actor from his light-hearted portrayal as the time-traveling hero from “Doctor Who.”

“Rock ‘N’ Roll High School” (Rated R) -- Di-rected by B-movie king Roger Corman and starring The Ramones and P.J. Soles, “Rock ‘N’ Roll High School” is a punk-rock classic. When a fascist principal (Mary Woronov) takes over Vince Lombardi High School, The Ramones and the students fight back using the Power of Rock! And explosives.

PICKS OF THE WEEK

“Dirty Dancing: Limited Keepsake Edition” (PG-13) -- This release of “Dirty Dancing” is so packed with special features, there’s no way you’ll put this “baby in a corner” ... of your book-shelf. ...Sorry about that. Anyhoo, this two-disc set contains not only the newly remastered film, but also every special feature that’s been in-cluded in previous releases, plus more than an hour’s worth of bonus material. Extras include a fan reel created by Facebook fans, a tribute to Patrick Swayze, an interview with Swayze about the dancing in the film, a hardcover 52-page book and a coupon for $50 off a stay at the Mountain Lake Hotel in Virginia, which was used as the Kellerman’s Resort in the film. Seri-ously, with so much stuff in this Keepsake Edi-tion, how could you NOT have “the time of your life”? Aw man, I did it again.

“Doctor Zhivago Anniversary Edition” (PG-13) -- Director David Lean’s follow up to “Lawrence of Arabia” is another epic adventure that garnered five Academy Awards. Omar Sharif and Julie Christie star in this majestic love story set dur-ing the Russian Revolution. Sharif plays the titu-lar doctor, who also is a poet. Christie is Lara, a married woman who becomes his muse. Zhiva-go is married and loves his wife, but also has feelings for the beautiful Lara. Torn by his love for two women, the poet must make a choice while their world erupts in turbulent conflict.

IT TAKES TWO by Bonnie St. ClairLaurel without Hardy? Bert without Ernie? Hall without Oates? They just wouldn’t have been the same. Join Tidbits as we share stories behind some famous “people pairs”

and how they managed to discover one another.• In the original story, Batman met the boy who would become Robin in 1940. Dick Grayson was an eight-year-old circus acrobat, the son of trapeze artists. When a gangster who’d been extorting money from the circus sabotaged the riggings, Dick’s parents fell to their deaths. Batman investi-gated the crime, and he became fond enough of the boy to become his legal guardian (as his alter ego, Bruce Wayne). He instructed the youngster in the ways of fighting crime

and dubbed him Robin, the Boy Wonder.• Cherilyn Sarkisian dropped out of school and moved to Hollywood with dreams of becoming an actress. At 17, she met Sonny Bono at Aldo’s Coffee Shop. Bono worked for music producer Phil Spector and was able to get Cher, as he called her, work as a background vocalist. A songwriter at heart, Sonny had peddled his tunes without much success. But when he and Cher became romantically involved, the pair recorded his tune “I Got You, Babe,” which hit number one on the pop chart and made stars of Sonny and Cher.

• One day in 1881, Dr. John Watson happened to rent a room at a lodging house at 221B Baker Street in London, England. His roommate was a mysterious chap named Sherlock Holmes. Holmes was quite secretive about what he did for a living, but eventually confessed that he was a private detective, which (at the time) was a rather rare profession. Fascinated by Holmes’ tales and the way he employed logical deduction to

solve cases, the two became not only friends but also coworkers and confidantes. • That levelheaded, sturdy housewife Blondie wasn’t so very domestic when she first appeared in the newspaper comics section some 70 years ago. Blondie Boopadoop was a carefree flapper back in 1930, when she met Dagwood Bumstead, the young play-boy son of a railroad tycoon. In fact, Dagwood’s millionaire father opposed his son’s re-lationship with Blondie, and threatened to cut off his financial support if they continued seeing one another. The elder Bumstead grudgingly gave his blessing to the marriage, but he still nixed his son’s inheritance, forcing Dagwood to become one of the working

class.• Clyde Barrow was born into extreme poverty in rural Texas. As he came of age, the Great Depression ravaged the nation, and the angry young man turned to burglary and robbery as a means of survival. One December evening in 1929, he was visiting a friend when he heard a clatter in the kitchen. “That’s Bonnie Parker,” the pal told him. “She’s making hot chocolate. Go say hello.” It was love at first sight; the pair chatted into the wee hours of the morning. The next day, Bonnie hit the road with Clyde and the pair

machine-gunned their way to infamy.• Daniel Wesson was born to a family in Worcester, Massachusetts. At 18, he was apprenticed to his brother’s shoe manufacturing company, but grew dissatisfied and joined up with another brother, Edwin, as a journeyman gunsmith. In 1852, Daniel met Horace Smith, a fellow gun enthusiast who’d learned about firearms while working at the

National Armory in nearby Springfield. They formed a partnership with the goal of marketing a lever action repeating pistol, and the

two became well known as Smith & Wesson.

SENIOR NEWS LINE by Matilda Charles

Don’t Fall for This Free LunchHave you seen the ads? They offer us a free lunch at a posh loca-tion while we attend a seminar on financial investing, with experts to advise us. Don’t be taken in by it. It could be the most expen-sive lunch you’ll ever have. The Securities and Exchange Commis-

sion and the Financial Industry Regulatory Authority just released a report detailing the investment scams that are becoming rampant against seniors. While the study concentrated on Southern states, there’s no doubt this is happening

across the country. The scam works like this: When you think you’re going to an in-vestment education seminar that includes a free lunch at a nice place, you end up facing high-pressure sales tactics and misleading claims. You might be pushed to open new accounts, sign complicated docu-ments (without being given the opportunity to read them or take them to your attorney for review) or buy investment products that aren’t suitable for you (or that

might not even exist).Because we’re seniors and the top-ic is important to us, we’re prom-ised high returns on our life sav-ings with safe investments and excellent liquidity for a financially

secure retirement. Here are two ways to educate your-

self against investment fraud:¥ Go to AARP (www.aarp.org) and look at its online videos. Search for investment fraud and “The Lure of Money.” While you’re there, take the Investment Fraud IQ test

to see how you score.¥ Go to www.sec.gov and search for “free lunch report” for the whole 46-page study. It includes examples of the ads that are used in these scam free-lunch invest-ment seminars. If you have ques-

tions, call the SEC’s Office of Investor Education and Advocacy at 800-SEC-0330.

Here’s a scary thought: Research shows that 78 percent of us have received one of these free-lunch invitations.

PINE TREES! (continued):

• The state tree of Montana is the ponderosa pine. Remember “Bonanza,” the long-running television series that gave viewers a feel of the American West? The Cartwright family lived on the Ponderosa Ranch. “Bonanza” was the first television series filmed outdoors in color. The 430 episodes from September 12, 1959 to Janu-ary 16, 1973 were filmed in locations in Arizona, Nevada and California. • Nevada’s State Tree is the Great Basin bristle-cone pine. Bristlecone pines do not look like ordinary pine trees seen in most forests. There are three members of the bristlecone group of pines; the Rocky Mountain bristlecone, the Great Basin bristlecone and the Sierra Foxtail pine. The oldest, some of which are 5,000 years old, are in the White Mountains of eastern California. These trees start out with green, smooth bark, but as they age, the bark becomes scaly and their shapes are very twisted. Bristlecone pine needles remain on the trees for 12 to 20 years. When the trees are about 20, they begin produc-ing small hard, reddish-brown cones. • The Ancient Bristlecone Pine Forest in the White Mountains of California is located at an elevation of 10,000 to 11,000 feet (3,048 to 3,353 meters). These trees are recognized as the oldest known continuously standing trees on earth! A walk through this forest is almost sur-real. The oldest tree, Methuselah (taken from the oldest man recorded in the Bible), is unmarked in the forest to protect it from a curious and ador-ing public. • One pine species sought by lumbermen is the western white pine. Highly prized for produc-ing top quality lumber, large native stands of this species in northern Idaho provided the incentive for the Potlach Lumber Company to build the world’s largest mill (in 1906), the entire town of Potlach, Idaho, and the Washington, Idaho and Montana Railway. The railway was nicknamed the “White Pine Route.” • While the western white pine is the state tree of Idaho, the “Pine Tree State” is Maine. Ap-proximately 90 percent of Maine is covered with trees, and even though there are many varieties of trees, the eastern white pine is one of the most prevalent species. Early settlers used the tall pines in shipbuilding. • White, yellow and, yes, there are red pines as well. The red pine is the state tree of Minnesota. Commonly called the Norway pine, even though it didn’t originate in Norway, the red pine has a reddish-colored bark from whence it gets its name. A lot of telephone poles are made from red pines.

¥ Next time you’re in Tinseltown, re-member that it is unlawful to herd more than 3,000 sheep at a time down Hol-lywood Boulevard.

¥ In the naming of American states, there a quite a few that never quite made it. It’s interesting to speculate about the possibilities, though. For instance, if you currently reside in the state of Kentucky or parts of Tennes-see, but for the whimsy of fate you could be a Transylvanian. Some people once wanted to take parts of Texas and Oklahoma to create the great state of Texlahoma (perhaps displaying a slight lack of imagination). When the Mor-mon church settled out west, Brigham Young petitioned to have the state of Deseret created, and the land he suggested make up the state included present-day Utah, almost all of Nevada and Arizona, a sizable chunk of Califor-nia and bits of five other states. Long Island, in New York, even had designs on statehood at one time.

Ernest Jennings Ford was a radio, record-ing and television star who was born in Tennessee. To make himself known, he created a hillbilly persona and became known as “Tennessee” Ernie Ford. • Ernie started his career as a ra-dio personality in Bristol, Tennessee. His career lasted over 50 years and included classical music and voice training at the Cincinnati Conservatory of Music. • His time spent as a disc jockey at vari-ous radio stations led him to the creation of “Tennessee Ernie” as a radio host in San Bernardino, California. On the Bar Nothin’ Ranch Time his popularity was re-ally developed. • Ernie moved on to a Pasadena, California radio station and became a singer on Cliffie Stone’s live country show Dinner Bell Roundup. Cliffie Stone was also an assistant producer and talent scout for Capitol Records and introduced him as a singer the studio should sign. They did and he went on to record 83 albums on the Capitol label.• In 1954 Tennessee Ernie Ford visited Lucy and Ricky Ricardo on the “I Love Lucy” show. He played a country bumpkin in two hilarious episodes. “I Love Lucy” was one of the most popular television shows at the time, and he was invited back in the same role a year later.• From 1956 to 1965 Ernie hosted his own primetime television show, “The Ford Show.” Because of his popularity, many people thought the show was named after him. It wasn’t. It was for the sponsor of the show, The Ford Motor Company. • One of the unique features of “The Ford Show” was Ernie closing with a gospel, hymn or spiritual song in his beautiful bari-tone voice. His memorable catch-phrase was, “Bless your little pea-pickin’ hearts!” • In 1955, Ernie had two Top Ten country hits: “The Ballad of Davy Crockett” and his most successful recording, “Sixteen Tons.” “Sixteen Ton”s was No. 1 on the country charts for ten weeks and on the pop charts for eight. Merle Travis wrote “Sixteen Tons” recalling the life of Kentucky coal miners. The chorus was written from a let-ter Merle received from his brother, John, about a journalist killed covering World War II combat in the Pacific in 1945. The words, “You load sixteen tons and what do you get? Another day older and deeper in debt, St. Peter don’t you call me ‘cause I can’t go, I owe my soul to the company store,” were referring to when coal miners bought supplies in the company store on credit to be paid back when they received their checks. Merle would change the words when he sang the song, after its huge success, to, “I owe my soul to Ten-nessee Ernie Ford!”

1. Using a large skillet, heat the pan on high for 1 minute. Add the oil, butter, tomatoes and salsa. Cook, stirring, for 1 minute. Crush 1 cup of chips and add them to the pan, stirring to combine them with the salsa. Reduce heat to medium and cook for 1 minute.2. Reduce heat to low and add the beaten eggs to the mixture in the pan. Cook the eggs, gently scraping the bottom of the pan to remove the cooked egg and allow the raw egg to make contact with the heat. Proceed until the eggs are cooked but still soft, about 3 to 5 minutes.3. Add the remaining tortilla chips to the pan. Mix gently to combine. Sprinkle the migas with the shredded cheese. Serve immediately. Makes 4 servings.

Celebrate Cinco de Mayo With Mexican Migas

The fifth of May -- or, as it’s known in Mexico and cities around the United States, Cinco de Mayo -- is a regional Mexican holiday. On May 5, 1862, at the Battle of Puebla, the Mexican army led by Mexican General Ignacio Zaragoza Segu’n was victorious over the French army. It’s a cultural holiday celebrated all over the United States, and in the state of Puebla and other states in Mexico. Cinco de Mayo also is the perfect time to add a cultural recipe to your culinary repertoire.Migas (which means crumbs) is a spicy egg and cheese dish that uses broken tortilla chips to create a delicious, all-vegetarian dish. It’s popular in Mexico and the Southwestern United States. Migas are full of protein, and transform ordinary eggs into a quick breakfast, a delicious brunch or lunch, or a delicious main-course meal.My family and I love Migas, and the numerous other ethnic vegetarian dishes we’ve added to our daily menu. We’ve become more adventurous, more open-minded about other cultures, and received the added benefit of a healthier diet and some delicious recipes!A celebration is the perfect time to try something new. Mexican Migas are a tasty way to introduce your family to a historic celebration and a meatless, yet-satisfying meal.

Young Collie Obsessed With Animal Droppings

DEAR PAW’S CORNER: We have a lot of nature and wildlife surrounding our property, and much of that wildlife crosses through our yard and leaves “pel-lets” behind -- deer, skunk, fox, coyote and so on. Our 7-month-old bearded Collie, “Jesse,” is uncon-trollably attracted to these pellets and eats them. How do I stop this behavior? -- Cindy K., Clinton Township, Mich.

DEAR CINDY: Stopping Jessie from eating those wild-life pellets (droppings, really) is indeed difficult. Dogs instinctively seek out unusual odors and often lick or eat other animals’ droppings as part of this behavior -- after all, droppings can smell quite strong. The most effective way to control Jesse’s behavior is to remove the source of the problem -- that is, the drop-pings themselves. This means combing through the property prior to letting Jesse out, and picking up and disposing of all droppings. That can be pretty labor-intensive, not to mention hav-ing Jesse go nuts watching you walk around the yard while he’s stuck inside. Another option is to fence off a portion of the yard big enough for Jesse to run around, while keeping wildlife out. A third option is to put Jesse on a leash when you take him out, so you can keep him away from the wildlife droppings. You may be able to combine a couple of methods. In addition to regularly cleaning up the droppings, take Jesse out on a leash and have him “go” in roughly the same area every day. He’ll soon associate this area as his elimination spot. Afterward, spend some time with him on basic obedience (sit, stay, heel) and walk him around the yard on his leash. When he darts out to sniff a dropping or other spot, give him a firm “come!” or “heel!” and, when he returns to your side, a small treat. In short, make obeying you more rewarding than explor-ing droppings.
