As we head into the season of cold temperatures, Tidbits presents some interesting and informative facts about winter. • For those of us in the northern hemisphere, the first day of winter is the day the sun is farthest south, on either December 21 or 22. Also known as the Winter Solstice, it’s the shortest day of the year, with about 9.5 hours of daylight. • A snowflake starts out as an ice crystal that freezes around a tiny piece of dust in the air. It can be just one ice crystal, or as it falls, several crystals can join together. There are always six sides, and although two snowflakes may be very similar, none are exactly the same. The shape and form are dependent on the temperature, water vapor in the air, moisture content of the cloud, the wind, and the length of time it takes to reach the ground. Extremely cold weather produces very fine, powdery snowflakes, while temperatures near the freezing point cause much larger and more complex ones. The average snowflake falls at the rate of about 3.1 mph (5 km/hr) and it can take several hours for one to make it to the ground. turn the page for more!

◆ Don’t throw away that damaged garden hose. Here are three great ideas: 1) Use as a weatherstrip along the bottom of your garage door. 2) Use sections to protect the blades on your ice skates. 3) Use as a safety edge on your saws in the shop. Cut to fit, and slip it over the blade.

◆ Athletes playing baseball on steroids have frequently been in the news in recent years, but drugs are nothing new in America’s national sport. During the late 1960s and throughout almost all of the ‘70s, Dock Ellis was a valued pitcher who played for several teams, including the Pittsburgh Pirates. On June 12, 1970, Ellis took LSD, under the mistaken belief that it was an off day for his team. By the time he realized that the Pirates were scheduled to play against the San Diego Padres that evening, it was too late. The drug proved to have no ill effect on Ellis; in fact, he pitched a no-hitter. When he recounted the event to a reporter 12 years later, he said he remembered only bits and pieces of the game, though he felt euphoric. Many years later, after being treated for addiction, Ellis became a coordinator for an anti-drug program in California.

HOW TO LOSE WEIGHT Part 4

Fibre helps you lose weightThe body needs nutrients to survive and perform daily activities. It gets its fuel from food. The food that you eat makes a difference on how the body performs. It is not about the amount of calories, but the content of nutrients in food that makes a difference in how the body performs and maintains good weight.

The body requires fibre for proper functioning. Fibre helps control weight, but most people only have 15 grams of fibre each day.

Here are some reasons of why the body needs fibre:• digestive health• proper functioning of the colon • to maintain good bacteria • lose weight Intake of fibre should be an average of 25-30 grams per day.

To help you understand the body’s requirements of fibre and how to

increase fibre intake, note that most fruits, vegetables and whole grains have at least 2-4 grams of fibre per serving.

Whole grains such as brown rice and barley, vegetables like sweet potatoes, snow peas, and fruits like apples and pears with skin are a high source of fibre with 4-6 grams of it per serving. Cooked legumes, most nuts and seeds, berries, and dried fruit, are very high sources of fibre with more than 6 grams per serving.

Make sure you are having the appropriate intake of fiber if you are looking to lose weight. For more information on how start losing weight or how to increase your intake of good fibre, give me a call at 604-355-5433. You will have your free consultation if you are motivated to lose weight!

It’s YOUR Home!Trust

To Help With It.

Create a safe home for your pets during the holidays(NC)—Decorating your home for the holidays is an exciting time of year for families, but small changes in the environment can be drastic for pets. From visiting family and holiday feasts, to decorations and gifts under the Christmas tree, the holidays present many exciting – and potentially dangerous – new situations for your little furry friends. PetSmart offers the following tips to help pet-parents prepare for changes in store:

• Deck the halls with tape and cord covers. Christmas decorations mean extra electrical cords, plugs and plenty of tempting new “chew toys”. Pet-parents should take the extra time during decorating to tape down or cover cords to help prevent shocks, burns or more serious injuries.

• Chestnuts roasting on an open fire... aren’t good for pets. We often think we’retreating our little ones with table

scraps but this “treat” can be harmful since dogs and cats do not have the same digestive systems or nutritional needs as people. Chocolate contains the heart stimulant theobromine, which, even in small quantities, can be toxic to dogs and cats. Keep pet-friendly treats on-hand instead, so they munch safely while still enjoying the feasting fun.

• Hollyis not so jolly for pets… Some of our favourite seasonal décor is harmless

for humans, but can be unsafe for animals. Mistletoe, holly berries and poinsettia plants are poisonous to pets, causing severe, upset stomachs. Consider using repellent sprays or a doggie gate to help keep thems away from harmful areas and objects.

More information on prepping pets and keeping them safe can be found in the PetSmart Pet Care Library at www.mypetsmart.com/petcare.

Adoptables

Page 6 Tidbits Of Tri Cities For Advertising Call (604) 638-7399

What’s In a Color?Any rescue group will tell you that black cats are harder to find homes for than any other color. Many shelters are overrun with black cats, and Katie’s Place is no different. I think of all the black cats at our shelter like Breeze, and Bijou, Dinah, and Kelli, Hannah, and Kim, just to name a few, and I cannot help but wonder why these amazing, beautiful, loving creatures are unable to find a home. Next time you are visiting a shelter look a little closer and you might be surprised at what you find in a plain black cat. Juliette is a loving, trusting cat who was

left behind by her family and was fed by a neighbour for about 2 years. Eventually the neighbour didn’t want to deal with her anymore so Juliette was taken to a shelter. Her original family was located but they didn’t want her back so she was transferred to Katie’s Place.Juliette definately feels more comfortable around people than other cats. Her beautiful face is often somber and because she is a medium-haired black cat Juliette is often overlooked by adopters. Juliette greets visitors with enthusiasm if she can get them on their own without being

crowded by the other cats. She is a gentle, affectionate little girl who deserves a caring forever home. She is such a nice little cat and so pretty with her fine, soft fur and smokey highlights - a real treasure for a new family. Twilight was found homeless and taken into shelter care while still less than a year old. Whatever else she might have endured in her past, she was probably stressed by all the changes in her life over which she had no control. We’ve found at the shelter that she enjoys spending time with you once she knows and trusts you; she enjoys a snuggle on her own terms. She’s actually come a long way since she’s been with us and she’s now quite easygoing. In a home environment (ideally, without small children or cats), Twilight would blossom and be able to show her happy, loving side all day long. You would find yourself with a devoted little feline friend.

Pet BitsHoliday Reading

With the holiday season in full swing, you’re probably busy with a dozen things at once, preparing for visitors and shopping for gifts. Don’t forget to schedule in some “me” time and relax with your pet and a few good books, like these:

“Dog Is My Copilot: Rescue Tales of Flying Dogs, Second Chances and the Hero Who Might Live Next Door” (Andrews McNeel Publishing)This unique and heartwarming tale of an airborne pet-rescue service is one of my favorite books of the year. Author Patrick Regan details the exploits of Pilots N Paws, an organization through which pilots volunteer their time, aircraft and expenses to fly dogs sitting on “death row” in certain shelters to other parts of the country and to shelters where they are more likely to be adopted.

“Little Boy Blue” (Barron’s)Pet rescue takes a grimmer but still hopeful tone in this combination memoir-nonfiction of a puppy rescued from a shelter’s gas chamber, and author Kim Kavin’s deeper look into the shelter system. Shelters aren’t great places at the best of times, but dogs deemed “unadoptable” often find themselves in the worst circumstances, with euthanasia just hours away. A grass-roots movement to save dogs like Blue is building, and Kavin profiles some of these rescuers who donate time, money and love to find homes for as many “death-row dogs” as possible.

“Two Seeing Eye Dogs Take Manhattan: A Love Story” (Guide Dog Adventures)On a lighter note, what’s it like to be a seeing eye dog in the big city? Lloyd Burlingame takes a look at life from a service dog’s view -- specifically, two dogs: Hickory and Kemp -- in this refreshing, unique and funny book. Pick it up today.

Q: I am a big fan of “Sons of Anarchy,” and I was wondering who the pretty blonde is? She was on a couple of episodes and played Karen. I know I’ve seen her on something else prior to this. -- Geri R., via e-mailA: Tara Summers, who turns 33 in December, plays Dr. Karen Dunhill on FX’s rough-and-tumble, motorcycle-filled crime drama. Tara is a TV and film vet who’s been in lots of series and feature film, including “Alfie,” “Boston Legal,” “Dirt,” “Factory Girl,” “Damages” and “Ringer.”

You can see her this winter in the feature film “Hitchcock,” which stars Anthony Hopkins (as Alfred Hitchcock) and Helen Mirren (as his wife, Alma Reville), with Tara playing Rita Riggs.Tara told me what it was like working with the two legendary actors: “Helen Mirren ... it’s really like her movie. She’s extraordinary. It focuses on the love story between Hitchcock and his wife, and how she was the silent partner in the operation. His wife had a lot more to do with it than we will ever know. And Anthony Hopkins is one of my heroes, and he was so generous and so kind. He’s always in a good mood, and just so amazing to work with and to watch.”***Q: My friend told me that the CW is remaking “Sex and the City.” Is that true? If so, why? It was great as it was on HBO.

-- Penny W., SeattleA: The CW is not remaking the hit HBO series, which starred Sarah Jessica Parker and Kim Cattrall. Rather, they bought the rights to the prequel, “The Carrie Diaries,” based on the book written by “Sex” author Candace Bushnell. “The Carrie Diaries” -- set in the 1980s -- chronicles Carrie Bradshaw’s (played by AnnaSophia Robb) coming-of-age as she navigates her senior year of high school and discovers the glittering lights of Manhattan, and lots of shoes. “The Carrie Diaries” premieres on the CW on Monday, Jan. 14, at 8/7c, followed by “90210,” which moves to 9/8c.***Q: I was a big fan of “The Cosby Show,” and I wondered whatever happened to the actor who played Rudy’s friend, Stanley, on the show. -- Justin W., via e-mailA: Merlin Santana, who went on to play

Ohagi on “Moesha” and Romeo on “The Steve Harvey Show,” died on 2002 at the age of 26. Tragically, he was falsely accused of attempted rape of 15-year-old Monique King, so her boyfriend, Brandon Bynes, shot Merlin six times, killing him. Brandon received three consecutive life sentences plus 70 years in prison, while Monique received eight years in juvenile custody. ***Q: When will “Cougar Town” be back? -- Jennifer T., TampaA: TBS has announced that “Cougar Town” will return for a 15-episode fourth season beginning Tuesday, Jan. 8. So raise a glass (of red wine, of course) to the return of your favorite cul-de-sac gang, as they begin a new era on a new network. I can’t wait!

→ On Dec. 4, 1872, a British ship spots the Mary Celeste, a 100-foot American brig, sailing erratically but at full sail near the Azores Islands with not a soul on board. The last entry in the captain’s log was dated 11 days earlier, showing that the Mary Celeste had been drifting since then with no one at the wheel. The fate of the crew remains a mystery to this day.

→ On Dec. 6, 1884, in Washington, D.C., workers place a 9-inch aluminum pyramid atop a tower of white marble, completing construction of a monument to the city’s namesake and the nation’s first president, George Washington.

→ On Dec. 5, 1933, the 21st Amendment to the U.S. Constitution is ratified, repealing the 18th Amendment and bringing an end to the era of national prohibition of alcohol in America. Utah became the 36th state to ratify the amendment, achieving the requisite three-fourths majority of states’ approval.

→ On Dec. 3, 1947, Marlon Brando’s famous cry of “STELLA!” first booms across a Broadway stage, electrifying the audience at the Ethel Barrymore Theatre during the first-ever performance of Tennessee Williams’ play “A Streetcar Named Desire.”

→ On Dec. 9, 1950, Harry Gold -- who had confessed to serving as a courier of top-secret information on the atomic bomb -- is sentenced to 30 years in jail for his crime. Gold implicated his brother-in-law and sister, Julius and Ethel Rosenberg, who were later convicted and executed for espionage.
