Simon Edwards, who co- owns Narborough Hall with his wife Sophie, thinks their success is down to creating a retail destination and a unique shopping ex- perience for people who want an alternative to well- known high street stores. All its products are hand- picked to offer a broad and unique selection of gifts. This has helped the store establish itself as a destina- tion shopping venue. Simon and Sophie have worked hard to put Narbor- ough Hall firmly on the retail map. In addition to PR, social media and advertising initi- atives, Narborough Hall reg- ularly hosts customer events. One of its most suc- cessful is its annual Christ- mas preview evenings. Sophie and Simon say this is the perfect opportunity to showcase their winter col- lection before most people have begun to think about Christmas. Last year, more than 1,000 people visited during the preview evenings and average basket value increased significantly. Narborough Hall used a ‘Spend and Save’ promotion to increase customer spend and encourage customers to return. The Melton-based com- pany said it focuses its mar- keting on criteria including quality, palatability – dogs and cats must love it – de- livering a strong retailer margin and its ability to achieve a good market share, so retailers continue to stock it. To stand out on the shelf, HiLife is displayed in high quality packaging, with powerful, colourful and innovative designs. The company also create products and ranges for specific market sectors such as dedicated lines for pet specialist outlets and discount supermarkets. Town & Country Petfoods was the first nationally-dis- tributed pet food brand to develop a range of good quality products, attract- ively packaged but compet- itively priced, for the specif- ic needs of discount outlets – a previously-overlooked channel for pet food distri- bution. It now supplies low-price retailers including Pound- land, Home Bargain and B&M Bargains. Town & Country Petfoods is a family-run business based in Melton Mowbray. It was established in 1974 by John Parkinson, who re- mains chairman, with his sons Tony and Peter run- ning the business day-to- day. The company employs around 20 people at its Melton headquarters. TAURUS Health & Fitness is a family business, estab- lished in March 2007. From its shop in Leicester and its website, it offers sports nutrition, vitamins, health foods and sportswear to a nationwide customer base. With online competition getting fiercer, the company has made huge efforts to protect its web sales by us- ing social media to send out the latest, most competitive offers and ensuring it is always very competitive on price. Service is also a big part of its proposition.
