1. CREATING TOMORROW’S FUTURE

Public schools, like ours, cater for all students and are vital for the wellbeing of society – children of all races, cultures, religions and abilities come together to learn in a cohesive and stimulating environment. The Moree Public School community – students, staff, parents and community members - can be very proud of what we continue to achieve by working together and striving for excellence. Last Monday the established Education Week tradition to open with an interdenominational Service of Worship continued. The children were both informed and entertained by Reverend Brown and Reverend Hayes. As always, our students listened attentively and displayed excellent manners. Student representatives involved in the service spoke eloquently and the choir performed beautifully under the guidance of Miss March and Mr Roberts.

The MPS choir sang: Rainbow Connection and A Million Dreams

A little later in the morning many parents took the opportunity to join the teachers for a delightful morning tea. It is always nice to meet and speak with parents in this informal setting. Morning tea was followed by our open classrooms session. Teachers and students were delighted to have many parents and friends visit their classroom. The parents I spoke with were highly impressed with what they saw. I extend a huge thank you to all involved in our Education Week activities – Today’s schools creating tomorrow’s future.

high standards of participation and behaviour throughout the trip. Special thanks to Mr Burgess (organiser), Miss Larken, Miss Jones, Miss Carlin and our parent helpers, Mr Kelly, Mr Beddoes and Mrs Jackson for taking the students. A chilly, early start for Year 6 Canberra excursion as the group departed MPS yesterday. Students will see many amazing features including Parliament House, the Australian War Memorial and the Institute of Sport. Hopefully they will also get to see and feel a little snow. I am sure everyone will have a great time. Thank you in advance to the teachers and parents who are accompanying the group. Find Your Treasure! Books are full of treasure – you just have to read to find it. From last week until the end of next week the school will conduct a number of activities that promote the joy of books and reading with Book Week officially starting next Monday. MPS got an early start with our visiting shows last week - last Tuesday children were fortunate to be able to attend one of two visiting shows performed by Meerkat Productions. Students in Year K-3 saw the play Boy based on the Childrens Book Council Book of the Year short-listed book. Years 3-6 were privileged to see The Elephant another title short-listed for book of the year. There was plenty of laughter during both shows as the very entertaining and talented performers brought the books to life.

Students will also have the opportunity to participate in a colouring competition based on the short-listed books. Judging will occur shortly and prizes will be awarded next week. Dress up day is on the Tuesday 21st August. The day is an out of uniform day so that children can come dressed as their favourite book character. Have you got your child’s costume ready? P&C Meeting will be held in the school library on Monday 20 August commencing at 6:00pm. Parents are encouraged to come along. Tell Them From Me - Student Survey will be completed for the

second time this term. The survey will provide us with valuable feedback on what our students think about school life, how engaged they are with school and the different ways that teachers interact with them. This information will support the school in improving student wellbeing practices. The survey typically takes 30 minutes or less to complete and will be administered by the school during normal school hours. Your child will not take part if either you or your child do not wish. If you do not want your child to take part in the survey, please contact the school office. It’s Not OK to Be Away… School attendance is critical to student success. Simply stated, it is hard to learn when you’re not in school. Parents are asked to ensure that their child comes to school every day unless they are sick. Please remember to contact the school if your child is going to be absent for an extended period of time. In special circumstances such as travelling overseas or visiting relatives interstate, an exemption from school may be granted. Please make sure that when your child is absent from school you send a note explaining the absence. Mr Adrian King 2. P&C ASSOCIATION • MEETING: The next meeting will be held on Monday, 20th August – all parents and friends are most welcome to attend at 6.00pm. • UNIFORM SHOP: The uniform shop is kindly opened by volunteer co-ordinator, Ms Erin Livet each Wednesday and Friday morning between 8.30 and 9.30am. • THANK YOU THANK YOU HEFEREN SHIELD HELPERS & DONORS: A huge thank you to all who helped with the carnival BBQ and morning tea stall – serving and donation of cakes and slices certainly ensured the stall ran smoothly. 3.

4. SPORTING ROUNDUP Legends of League: Last Wednesday, the Moree Public School girls league tag team and boys rugby league team travelled to Gunnedah to compete in the regional finals of the Legends of League competition. The quality of teams was of a high standard and both teams competed hard in their pool matches. The girls team came away with two close losses and a draw against a very tough field of competition. The boys tackle team had a slow start in defence against Warialda PS, managing to escape with a draw. Some improved defensive efforts and coordination of attacking plays, earned the team another draw to St Joseph's Glen Innes. The third game against Glen Innes Public saw both teams go try for try until a remarkable 80 metre intercept by Preston Tighe snatched the win for Moree Public on full time. All students represented their school with pride and great sportsmanship. Well done, everyone! Mr Brown and Mrs Brown Soccer: Last Tuesday, 7th of August, both the boys and girls soccer teams played Guyra Central School in round 6 of the PSSA soccer knockout competition. Despite a massive effort by the girls, they were defeated 3-2 in what was a very close and tough game. Natahlia Davis and Lauren Appleby scored the goals with all team members working hard to keep the ball moving to the Moree end. The boys had a tight game only just coming away with the win in the last 5 minutes. Sam Custance found the back of the net taking the final score to 2-1. It was a massive effort put in by all the players making it a very exciting and entertaining game. The boys will now move into the semi-finals of the North West competition, with details of the game still being finalised. Both teams played with excellent sportsmanship and determination. Well done to the girls and good luck to the boys in their next game. Miss McNamara and Miss Miller

6. HEAD LICE

Head lice is a challenge for all schools and families. Please be vigilant and check your child’s hair regularly for eggs (which can be very hard to see) and/or hatched lice. Treatment lotions and combs are available at all pharmacies. A limited supply is available by request from school. Please contact Mrs Hosegood through the school office should you require this assistance. Thank you for your diligence in checking and treating hair and help minimise the issue for everyone.

Zone Athletics Carnival 2018 Last week the Heferen Shield Athletics Carnival was held at Boughton Oval with 17 schools from the district participating in an exciting day of school spirit, sportsmanship and great achievements. MPS had a team of 37 students attend the carnival, each achieving fantastic results from putting in 100% effort. Many will now be selected to represent the zone at the Regional Carnival on Friday 21st September in Tamworth – congratulations to all students! We had 3 students who were awarded individual trophies: Congratulations Mitchell, Darcy and Ailyn. We would like to thank the wonderful parents who helped us on the day with setting up, timekeeping and packing up, your help did not go unnoticed. Also, a massive thank you to the Moree Public School P&C for running a successful canteen on the day. Our appreciation goes to the school leaders who assisted all day in running the carnival. They represented themselves and the school with pride. Well done Dusty, Ella, Marni, Preston, Wally, Ryan and Christian!!!
