Smart GridCisco EnergyWise

Network based Energy solution from Cisco

EnergyWise is a technology on foundation products (switches and routers)

EnergyWise extends to non foundation products (PCs, building controls, etc…)

With 3rd Party Partners, Cisco can offer centralized monitoring, auditing and control of

network attached devices

EnergyWise enables the network as a platform for energy command and control

EnergyWise is part of Cisco’s Green solution

EnergyWise Endpoints

EnergyWise Endpoints are power consumers in an EnergyWise network.

Phones,PCs,HVAC etc..

Endpoints exhibit parent-child relationships. Example

IP Phone(child) attached to a PoE switch (parent)

Endpoints could also report data on its components. Example

PDU and its attached devices.

EnergyWise Domains - Scope and Need

Domains can be mapped to the metering / sub-metering in the building for breaking down consumption to granular levels.

A building could have multiple domains. EnergyWise domains are logical boundaries to contain EnergyWise messages. EnergyWise domains simplify the management of an EnergyWise enabled

network

EnergyWise Members

EnergyWise members have the ability to propagate EnergyWise messages. Some energywise members can share a neighbor relationship. Neighbor relationships apply only to members that can share energywise messages with

each other. Typically, the switches and routers become neighbors. Any EnergyWise query message is forwarded only to energywise neighbors.

Neighbor relationships are automatically discovered through CDP or UDP based handshakes

This leads to the population of a neighbor table on every member.

Alternatively, a user can set static neighbors if the entity is not reachable via CDP or UDP

EnergyWise Levels

An EnergyWise Power Level indicates the power state of an endpoint For example Level 2-3 for PC => Standby

The EnergyWise power management application/CLI can tell devices to enter power states using a EnergyWise power level set command

For example set level 3 The endpoint can also communicate its power level back to the network

Cisco EnergyWise Importance

An attribute used to establish relative business priorities between devices

It has a numerical range from 1 – 100 (100 being highest value)

For example: An office phone has lower

importance as compared to an emergency phone

EnergyWise Query Language

EnergyWise queries are a powerful paradigm that enhance the ability of the switch to gather data across an entire domain from any switch in the domain.

An EnergyWise query is structured similar to an SQL query. An SQL Query picks up static data from the database, an EnergyWise query picks up dynamic data from a distributed environment

Page 20: 1 © 2010 Cisco Systems, Inc. All rights reserved.Cisco Confidential C97-615173-00 EnergyWise Presentation for SE Ge Jin Borderless Network

EnergyWise Recurrences

Native to EnergyWise is the ability to raise queries based on time of day. They are generated automatically in the switch by using the switch clock to trigger

queries. In CLI, recurrences can be set on a per port basis or using the time range command Time based queries are fundamental to setting usage policies

EnergyWise Management

An EnergyWise enabled network has an SNMP-MIB that can be used to manage it The publically available MIB can be looked up under CISCO-ENERGYWISE-MIB Alternatively, an API is available for interested partners to manage an EnergyWise network The API provides certain advantages in management including the ability to make use of

the powerful EnergyWise queries
