E veryone has heard a story that sounded too good to be true. When a leading urethane foam manufacturer first heard about Best Homes from one of their customers, they had to check it out for them-selves. Here’s what caught their attention: they were told that during the hottest summer on record in Texas with an average high temperature of 102°F and keep-ing the thermostat at 75°F, Mike Murphy’s company had built a 2,414 square foot model home that had a cooling bill of only $43.69 for the month of August, 2011. Even though they said that it sounded too good to be true, when they looked into the story further, they found out that all of the properties Best Homes were building performed similarly.

With their pens and yellow note pads in hand, they headed out to Burleson, Texas to see for them-selves. Within the first two minutes of arriving, they knew they had been given the opportunity to meet one of the most amazing builders using the most comprehensive energy program in the country.

In the past, Mike and his partners at Best Homes had worked with Texas A&M’s Energy Department, as well as EnergyStar and LEED trying to find a way to build high performance homes, but none of them de-livered the performance they were searching for. How-ever, he stumbled across an ad for an engineering firm that is also a NASA spinoff company called Energy-Wise. In an economy where many builders were going under, Best Homes and EnergyWise developed a prod-uct that consumers desired so strongly that some were even coming in and paying cash for the program. Mike called while this article was being written to say that he had sold 4 homes last week. They were the first homes

he had sold in the month of November in the past 10 years. When asked what he attributed the performance of his homes to, he said that it was the holistic approach to the building envelope that EnergyWise utilizes and their high performance engineering of the mechanical systems.

Mike said, “I’ve got to tell you, many of the homes being built today are nothing but shelter. Our homes have very little dust because of the lack of air infiltration, they are quiet, and I have had zero call backs on crown molding shrinking. When we built using conventional building methods, we had to go out and fix approximately 40% of our homes.”

Mike has every reason to be excited. He even had a customer tear up a contract on a competitor’s house around the corner and purchase one of theirs after the couple stopped by the Best Homes’ model while checking out their new neighborhood. “These homes perform so well that the money they save in energy is enough to cover up to two of their mortgage pay-ments per year.” As Mike walked customers through the model homes, he was quick to point out the raised ceilings in every room.

“Now with spray foam and this program, I’m sloping and raising all kinds of ceilings that I couldn’t before. I can raise any top plate in a foamed EnergyWise house, and my HVAC system performs perfectly.”

Mike went on to explain why he is against sloping a ceiling with conventional insulation. In his experience, the air permeable insulation just does not perform and makes the room uncomfortable. When asked why more builders don’t build this type of home, Mike offered, “I started building in 1985. It was so hard to change even my own thought process on building.

After learning the EnergyWise System, I had to re-train everyone’s thinking that works for me. In a vibrant market, I may not have given EnergyWise a second look. Learning the technology has been fun.”

When asked how long he had been thinking about building homes the way he is now, Mike stated, “I’m two years into this, and my models have only been open since June. The hardest one to convince was my mechanical contractor. We had to have a face-to-face meeting with the folks at EnergyWise, and my contractor all the while was saying, ‘it will never work.’ Now he wants me to build him an EnergyWise home.”

The minute a prospective buyer sees the attic in one of these high performance homes, the Best Homes commitment to quality and energy savings shines through. Mike takes you on a tour which starts by going through the garage to a set of stairs leading up to the attic. As you head up the stairs, you can feel the temperature rise. When you get to the top, you can feel the heat coming off of the radiant barrier coated plywood. Mike turns and takes a moment to say, “My competitors are using this radiant barrier. I just put it on so people can compare how well it works.” Even though it was only 98 degrees the day that we toured the model for Best Homes, the radiant roof deck was too hot to touch. Next, Mike takes you on a tour of the attic insulated with spray foam. As he opened the door, they were amazed. Mike began to count as he watched their eyes. He let them know that normally he can count to ten before someone will speak. Yes, it is true that the temperature, the humidity level, the comfort and

professional look of the attic can leave you speech-less. Where you would expect to see long tangled runs of flex duct strung everywhere and a dusty mess, you see instead a clean and professionally done space that shows you what a closed attic assembly should look like and makes you realize that if everyone could see this example of an EnergyWise High Performance House, everyone would buy one!

Simply stated, the moral of this story is that people want quality products. You would never go to a big electronics superstore after saving up your money to buy a home theater system and just buy the cheapest one there. You want performance! Why do so many builders miss this?

The way customers are buying Mike’s homes shows that Best Homes understands this con-cept. Mike Murphy and his partners are thrilled with the performance of the EnergyWise System. Mike made a statement that really sums up this story. “Our custom-ers are so thrilled with the performance of these homes that they are writing us fan mail.”

Many new homeowners are disappointed with results in energy efficiency and comfort even though they have incorporated a foam insulation package into their design. It’s sad, but true.

EnergyWise mechanical engineering offers the perfect solution and with a written performance guarantee!

Our proprietary space age engineering software and mechanical layout services are designed exclusively for foam insulated structures. We correctly size and engineer each mechani-cal system for proper air distribution, thus preventing problems such as improperly sized units, moisture issues, temperature dis-parities, etc…

All engineered duct layouts are reviewed and are stamped by Dr. Michael R. Busby, our Chief of Engineering, an MIT Graduate, PhD, PE and former NASA Rocket Scientist, to ensure optimal performance.

Anything less is simply guesswork.

Maximize Your Home’s Energy Efficiency With The World’s Only Capacity-On-Demand Geothermal Heat PumpHeating, cooling and hot water can account for as much as 75 percent of the total energy cost in a typical residence. GeoWise capacity-on-demand heat pumps are the most cost effective solution to all three energy sources. GeoWise heat pumps are the only three-stage/dual compressor geothermal heat pumps in the world. A 5 ton GeoWise unit has a 1 ½ ton and a 3 ½ ton compressor, so it can operate in either 1 ½ ton, 3 ½ ton or, in extreme condi-tions, the 5 ton mode. GeoWise heat pumps are never oversized or undersized and are the ultimate choice in load matching.
