Recently our Superintendent, Dr. Don Haddad, sent out an update informing our communityof the safety and security changes taking place in the district. I wanted to share what specificchanges have happened at Erie Middle as well as reminding you of the things we already have inplace.
Currently Erie Middle School has had, and will continue to have, the following securitymeasures in place:
Full Time Campus Supervisor
Regularly scheduled drills that follow the Standard Response Protocol: Lockdown, Lockout,Evacuation, Shelter in Place and Fire Drills
Classrooms doors locked using a Lock Block door system that allows teachers the ability toquickly lock the classroom
Outside doors locked all day except for 30 minutes when students are arriving and only themain doors are open during that time
Visitors required to show identification when entering the school and/or picking up students.
SafeToTell anonymous reporting system
School staff on duty before school, after school, during lunch and passing periods
Starting on January 9th Erie Middle will implement the new district wide entry system calledAiphone. This system requires all visitors to be buzzed into the building by a school staff mem-ber. The camera and door bell are located to the right of the main doors. All visitors will still be re-quired to check in at the front office and show ID. This new system will allow all of the outsidedoors to be locked during the school day. Our main doors will remain unlocked from 7:45 8:15
am and from 2:50 3:30 pm.
We know this new system will take some getting used to, so please bear with us. We wouldappreciate any feedback on how we can improve the system. If you have questions or commentsplease feel free to call 303-828-3391 or email me at [email protected].

Open Enrollment
Students who desire to attend a school or program outside of their designated attendance area may apply for
Open Enrollment/Nonresidence authorization for the school or program of their choice. In order to apply, an
Open Enrollment/Nonresident Application must be filled out.
Critical dates for the 2013-2014 school year
December 3, 2012 to January 15, 2013: Submit applications December 3 through January 15 is the period
in which applications for open enrollment should be submitted to the requested school.
February 7, 2013: Deadline to receive application status letter from school Written status letters from
the requested school will be sent to the applicant approving or denying the application by February 7.
March 1, 2013: Deadline for school visit and open enrollment confirmation Applicants who have been
approved for open enrollment should visit the requested school by March 1 and confirm their desire to open en-
roll.
Open Enrollment Reminders
Not all schools allow open enrollment. Each year the Board of Education reviews school populations, enroll-
ment projections, building capacities and staff sizes and determines which schools can permit open enrollment.
Students whose applications are denied or whose applications were submitted after the January 15 deadline will
be added to the waitlist of the requested school. Board policy also provides the opportunity of appeal.
TCAP TestngThe TCAP (Transitional Colorado Assessment Program) is based on the new Colorado Model
Content Standards and has replaced CSAP. The TCAP will continue to assess the same content
areas and grades as CSAP. Students will be taking the TCAP tests. The tests and schedule for
each grade level at EMS are as follows:
6th Grade: Reading, Writing, Math:
March 11 - 15
7th Grade: Reading, Writing, Math:
March 11 - 15
8th Grade: Reading, Writing, Math, Science:
March 11 - 15
Attendance is vital during this time. We wanted to let you know early so that appointments
and vacations are not scheduled during these days. Thanks in advance for your under-
standing and cooperation.
