Infections- number of cases of COVID-19 per 100,000 people across

England

Weekly rate: Week 49

The epidemic may be slowing in some regions, but not all. Case rates in the South East, London and East of England regions remain very high and increasing.

Detections of COVID-19 cases in England plateaued in week 49, following decreases in week 47 and 48, but emerging figures show a rise. Overall positivity rates also

plateaued in both Pillar 1 and 2. Increases in case rates were seen in London, South East and East of England in week 49, while decreases were observed in all other

regions. Cases rates have plateaued in all age groups in week 49. Positivity was highest in individuals who have reported having symptoms.

Infections – daily COVID-19 cases in Hampshire showing how the epidemic has

progressed over time – the ‘epidemic curve’

Source: PHE dashboard (Last updated on 13th December 2020)

During wave 1 only Pillar 1 (NHS/PHE laboratories) testing was available, this included people admitted to hospital and

later people living or working in a health or care environment. Widespread Pillar 2 community testing (Government's

commercial testing partners) began on 14th July 2020 and since then the data includes all both testing Pillars. Due to these

different testing strategies, it is therefore not possible to directly compare case numbers between wave 1 and wave 2.

Data only includes those cases which have tested positive

The data now includes all cases, those which have been tested by NHS/PHE laboratories and by the Government's commercial testing partners

Caution: There is a data lag with more test results expected for

the most recent week. Overall, the picture is beginning to shift

after a slight decline, with the number of new COVID-19 infections

increasing in Hampshire, emphasising the need to comply with

current government guidance to control the spread of infection.

Deaths

Source: PHE ONS- Deaths registered weekly in England and Wales, provisional

Excess (extra) deaths continue to be below the five-year weekly average we would usually

see at this time of year, for the 6th consecutive week. Sadly, 1,208 people have so far died due

to COVID-19, with 22 deaths over the latest.
