young percussionists by TROMP is highly admired by the World Federation of

International Music Competitions.”

This 24th edition of the TROMP competition, again more than a

hundred young percussion talents from around the world applied.

The fortunate ones that were selected by the jury to participate,

will not only come to Eindhoven to compete for prizes, but will also

meet as colleagues. Experience has shown that they make close

friendships during the competition and often initiate interesting

collaboration projects. The warm and cosy atmosphere in which our

appreciated host families even go the extra mile, is truly inspiring.

Welcoming laureates and renowned artists in the jury and on stage at

the same time, Eindhoven becomes the vibrant percussion capital of

the world these weeks!

Wishing all of our participants the best of luck and to everyone a

wonderful and inspiring event,

-Opnieuw meldden zich voor deze 24e editie van het TROMP

concours meer dan honderd jonge slagwerktalenten uit de hele

wereld aan. De gelukkigen die door de jury werden geselecteerd

om ook daadwerkelijk deel te nemen, zullen hier in Eindhoven

niet alleen strijden voor de prijzen, maar ontmoeten elkaar ook als

collega’s. Onze ervaring leert dat zij tijdens het concours hechte

Dr. Ir. Theo Tromp founded the Tromp Biennial in Eindhoven in

1970 because he felt talented young musicians had not enough

opportunities. Almost fifty years later TROMP has become the leading

competition for solo percussion in the world, the ideals of its founder

close at heart, creating opportunities and a stage for young

percussionists from around the world. TROMP’s membership of the

World Federation of International Music Competitions (WFIMC), which

can only be obtained by invitation, reflects a global recognition for

this reputable competition.

kregen. Bijna vijf decennia later is het concours uitgegroeid tot

‘Music and rhythm find their way into the secret places of the soul.’

A beautiful quote from the Greek philosopher Plato. That is what

music does. Those secret places are different for everyone. The way

music moves you, depends on the moment and the stories in your

heart. Music offers entertainment, inspiration, exaltation, it touches

and comforts, and thereby often affects your mood.

According to research, the meaning of music transcends words,

images and scents. This is because our brains are highly sensitive in

terms of recognising patterns such as sounds and vibrations.

A lot of people will be moved again this year, by performances of

the world’s greatest percussion talent during the bi-annual TROMP

competition and festival. They have come to Eindhoven from all over

the globe – 15 different countries – to treat both audience and jury to

the best performances they’ve got. I wish all the participants the best

of luck!

In addition, the audience will enjoy concerts by famous artists and

percussionists. The remarkable Opening Night will feature percussion

virtuoso Dominique Vleeshouwers, Austrian percussion soloist Martin

Grubinger, the Eindhoven breakdance group The Ruggeds and

Harmonie St. Michaël van Thorn, who will bridge the gap between

classical music and urban street culture. Breakdance becomes ballet

and a symphonic wind orchestra is transformed into a hip-hop

orchestra. A city like Eindhoven is all about transformation. This is

going to be unforgettable!

DEAR READER, VALUED GUEST,Geachte lezer, waarde gast,

‘Muziek en ritme vinden hun weg tot in de geheime plaatsen van de ziel.’

Een mooie uitspraak van de Griekse filosoof Plato. Dat is wat muziek

doet. Die geheime plaatsen zijn voor ieder mens verschillend. Hoe

muziek je raakt, hangt af van het moment en de verhalen in je

hart. Muziek biedt vermaak, inspireert, vervoert, ontroert, troost en

beïnvloedt daardoor vaak je stemming.

Volgens onderzoek is de betekenis van muziek veel groter dan

woorden, beelden of geuren. Dat komt omdat onze hersenen zeer

gevoelig zijn voor het herkennen van patronen zoals klank en

trillingen.

Er zullen ook dit jaar weer veel mensen geraakt worden door de

optredens van ‘s werelds grootste slagwerktalenten tijdens het

tweejaarlijkse TROMP concours en festival. Vanuit heel de wereld

– uit 15 verschillende landen – zijn ze in Eindhoven om hun beste

performance te geven voor publiek en jury. Ik wens alle deelnemers

veel succes!

Daarnaast genieten toeschouwers van concerten van bekende

artiesten en slagwerkers. Bijzonder is de openingsavond waarin

percussievirtuoos Dominique Vleeshouwers, de Oostenrijkse

slagwerksolist Martin Grubinger, Eindhovens breakdancegroep The

Ruggeds en Harmonie St. Michaël van Thorn een brug slaan tussen

klassieke muziek en urban straatcultuur. Breakdance wordt ballet

en traditionele harmonie tot hiphoporkest getransformeerd.

Transformatie, dat hoort bij een stad als Eindhoven. Het wordt

onvergetelijk!

TROMP 2018 is bursting at the seams. Both the team and

management are honoured to present to you a year of activities,

concerts and of course percussion talent from all over the globe.

TROMP Percussion Eindhoven distinguishes itself through

connection and collaboration. From local to international. And

not just within the familiar and usual areas:

Percussion has a particularly connecting quality because it represents street culture as well as the concert hall. Percussion fits anything and anyone. This is why percussion makes for such a perfect social adhesive.

As of the 2018 edition, TROMP plays to that fact more explicitly

than ever. Be surprised by innovative performances, new repertoire

and unexpected locations. The Opening Night for instance, is set

to be a spectacle in its own right. Worlds coming together: old

and new street culture (what is it really?), wind orchestra and The

Ruggeds.

Connecting on all levels. The top-notch talents who ‘undergo’ our

TROMP competition, form a close bond every time. They are often

seen the year after, sometimes in the same competition, other

times performing at the festival, but also returning as teachers

and sources of inspiration for our educational activities. The

TROMP Repertoire Days, organised from Tokyo to São Paulo, from

Boston to Moscow, and of course in Amsterdam as well, are all

designed by laureates from multiple editions. They support the

candidates and share their experiences with regards to setting

up a professional practice. Successful and nudged in the right

direction, in part, thanks to TROMP.

TROMP 2018 barst uit zijn voegen. Het is het team en bestuur een

enorm genoegen om u dit jaar activiteiten, concerten en natuurlijk

slagwerktalenten van over de hele wereld te kunnen bieden.

TROMP Percussion Eindhoven kenmerkt zich door verbinding en

samenwerking. Van lokaal tot internationaal. En dat niet alleen

binnen de gekende en gebruikelijke sectoren:

Percussie heeft juist zo’n verbindende kracht omdat het net zo gemakkelijk de straatcultuur als de concertzaal vertegenwoordigt. Percussie past bij alles en iedereen. Percussie is daarom bij uitstek ook een maatschappelijk bindende factor.

TROMP speelt daar vanaf editie 2018 meer dan ooit expliciet op

in. Laat u verrassen door vernieuwende performances, nieuw

repertoire en onverwachte locaties. Neem alleen al de Opening

Night, die een spektakel op zich belooft te worden. Werelden die bij

elkaar komen: oude en nieuwe straatcultuur (wat is dat eigenlijk?),

harmonie en The Ruggeds.

Verbinden, op alle fronten. De toptalenten die ons TROMP

concours ‘ondergaan’, vormen iedere editie weer een hechte

familie. De editie erna ziet u hen vaak weer terug, soms in het

concours zelf, in het festival als performers, en zeker ook als

docenten en inspirators van onze educatieve activiteiten. De

TROMP Repertoire Days, die we inmiddels van Tokio tot São Paulo,

van Boston tot Moskou, en ook ‘gewoon’ in Amsterdam organiseren,

worden door onze laureaten van meerdere edities vormgegeven.

Zij begeleiden de kandidaten, en delen hun ervaringen in de opzet

van een professionele beroepspraktijk. Mede succesvol en

richting gekregen dankzij TROMP.

ATTENDING THE COMPETITIONThe 1st en 2nd Rounds, Semi Finals and Finale take

place at Muziekgebouw Eindhoven. The 1st and 2nd

Rounds and Semi Finals take place in the small hall

and are open to the public. You can only enter the

hall and take your seat in the applause and changes

between participants. Times and schedules may change

until the last moment, so always check the latest

updates in the schedules at tromppercussion.com.

Tickets for the Finale, which takes place in the main

hall, are available at the Muziekgebouw Eindhoven

Ticket Office.

DANÍEL BJARNASONDaníel Bjarnason composed the new

mandatory final work, to be performed by

the three finalists with Asko|Schönberg,

the leading Dutch ensemble for new music.

Bjarnason is a multi-talented composer,

conductor and curator and works with

indiebands (Sigur Rós, Efterklang) as well as

orchestras like the Los Angeles Philharmonic.

Daníel Bjarnason is composer-in-residence

at Muziekgebouw Eindhoven. His Concerto

for Solo Percussion and Ensemble places

the soloist in a set-up of diverse percussion

instruments, with drums of the percus-

sionist’s choice, in which the marimba plays

a virtuosic central role.

dat door de drie finalisten wordt uitgevoerd

met het toonaangevende ensemble voor

nieuwe muziek Asko|Schönberg. Bjarnason

from Slagwerk Den Haag, Royal Concert-

among others and was awarded with the

Matthijs Vermeulen Price of Encourage-

ment 2003, Anjer Muziekprijs 2005, Kees

van Baarenprijs 2015 and an artist-in-

residence fellowship in Berlin by the DAAD.

Cinderella plays with the illusion of

someone trying to dance on high heels.

With commissioned compositions by leading composers TROMP continues to innovate and refresh the repertoire for classical solo percussion. Over the past fifteen years composers including Louis Andriessen, Bryce Dessner, Nico Muhly, Joey Roukens, Michael Torke, Steve Martland and Jacob ter Veldhuis have written new pieces for percussion commissioned by TROMP.-Met compositieopdrachten aan toonaangevende componisten blijft TROMP het nog jonge repertoire voor klassiek soloslagwerk iedere editie vernieuwen en verrijken. Martin GrubingerAustria Oostenrijk

Winner of multiple prizes, Martin Grubinger is recipient of the

Bernstein Award by the Schleswig Holstein Musik Festival and the

prestigious Jeunesses Musicales’ Würth Prize. He got invitations

from the Berliner Philharmoniker, Sinfonieorchester des Bayerischen

Rundfunks, Orchestre Philharmonique de Radio France and Orchestre

Philharmonique de Strasbourg among many others. Amongst the

growing number of works written for Grubinger are Tan Dun’s Tears

of Nature (2012) and Peter Eötvös’ Speaking Drums (2014).

Grubinger’s CD Drums‘n’Chant and the live recording of The

Percussive Planet on DVD, both for Deutsche Grammophon, have led

to a number of recordings for various labels.

Michael Burritt is a member of the Percussive Arts Society Board

of Directors, a contributing editor for Percussive Notes Magazine

and the chairman of the PAS Keyboard Committee. He is currently

Professor of Percussion and head of the department at The Eastman

School of Music. His works for solo marimba have become standard

repertoire, with commissions by The World Marimba Competition in

Stuttgart and Third Coast Percussion. As a soloist Burritt performed

with renowned orchestras, including the Dallas Wind Symphony,

Omaha Symphony, Chautauqua Symphony Orchestra, Richmond

Symphony Orchestra and Ju Percussion Group.

-Michael Burritt is lid van de Raad van Bestuur van de Percussive Arts

Arnold Marinissen, chairman of the jury Juryvoorzitter

Arnold Marinissen performs, teaches and gives master classes around the

world. He is a praised percussionist and composer, writing for Asko|Schönberg,

Slagwerk Den Haag and La Biënnale di Venezia, among many others.

Marinissen was artistic leader of Percussion Group The Hague and, together

with Anthony Fiumara, Lunapark. He was artist in residence at De Doelen

Rotterdam, programmer for Muziekgebouw aan ‘t IJ in Amsterdam and curator

for various festivals. He is faculty member and part of the Master Research team

at the Conservatorium van Amsterdam.

Emmanuel Séjourné is a percussionist and a composer. His works

have been commissioned or recorded by artists including Bogdan

Bacanu, Christoph Sietzen, Alexej Gerassimez, Gary Cook, Ju

Percussion Group, Nancy Zeltsman, Marta Klimasara and Katarzyna

Mycka. As a soloist, as well as with the ensemble Accroche-Note with

saxophonist Philippe Geiss (European Audiovisual Grand Prix), he has

performed all over the world and premiered over a hundred pieces

of music. Emmanuel Séjourné is head teacher of the Percussion

Department at the Académie supérieure de musique of Strasbourg

and teaches master classes in all major conservatories in Europe,

Asia and the USA.

-Emmanuel Séjourné is slagwerker en componist. Hij schreef werken

Momoko KamiyaJapan

Momoko Kamiya is director of the percussion department at the

Senzoku Gakuen College of Music, faculty at the Kunitachi College

of Music and a regular guest professor. She won the Luxembourg

International Marimba competition, was chosen as one of The Top

Ten Young Artists Today by the Toyota Foundation and awarded the

Azalea Cultural Prize of Kawasaki City. She performed with major

orchestras throughout Japan and abroad, released five recordings on

the Phillips label and Pieces of Peace on the Classic Concert label

in 2011. Momoko Kamiya served on the juries of international

competitions in ten countries.

Quincy Jones, Luc Besson, Orchestre National de France, and the

Berlin Opera. Ruwen Yang also appeared on films as The Banquet,

Shaolin Temple and Something the Lord Made. He was a member of

the jury of the fourth and fifth World Marimba Competition and the

International Great Chinese Marimba Competition in Taiwan, among

others.

Mark PekarskyRussia Rusland

Mark Pekarsky is a legendary Russian percussionist. As a student,

he performed with the Opera-Symphony Orchestra of Radio & TV

Moscow, later joined the Moscow Ensemble of Early Music Madrigal.

In 1976 he founded the first Russian percussion ensemble, with a

choice of 200 scores composed for the ensemble by several gene-

rations of Russian composers. ‘A catalyst for Russian composers'

creative activity’, according to The Berlin Newspaper Tagesspiegel.

Pekarksy also started the famous Pekarsky Percussion Project devo-

ted to the problems of modern percussion repertoire in 2000. Since

1997 Mark Pekarsky is a professor at the Moscow Conservatory.

-De legendarische Russische percussionist Mark Pekarsky speelde als

student al met het Opera-Symfonieorkest van Radio & TV Moskou, en

later bij het Moskouse ensemble voor oude muziek Madrigal. In 1976

richtte hij Ruslands eerste slagwerkensemble op en wist daarmee

componisten tot ruim 200 nieuwe composities voor slagwerk te inspi-

reren: ‘Een ware katalysator voor de Russische componeeractiviteit’,

schreef de Berlijnse Tagesspiegel. Pekarsky startte in 2000 ook het

beroemde Pekarsky Percussion project, gewijd aan de problematiek

van het moderne slagwerkrepertoire. Mark Pekarsky is professor aan

het conservatorium van Moskou sinds 1997.

Students from the Lorentz Casimir Lyceum in Eindhoven

will choose their own winner during the TROMP Finale. Five

students will form the youth jury. They will follow the partici-

pants throughout the competition and write a jury report for

each candidate.

preparation of the international percussion

competition. Participants from all over the

world are given the opportunity to attend

master classes by jury members and laureates

and study the competition’s repertoire, as

well as other solo repertoire. Since the start

in 2010 the Repertoire Days have

expanded to cities all over the world.

Investing in the future of its laureates, TROMP

provides various concert engagements all

over the world. As TROMP laureates, winners

of previous editions have performed solo or

as a soloist with renowned ensembles such

as Asko|Schönberg, Britten Sinfonia and the

Moscow Contemporary Music Ensemble in

internationally acclaimed concert halls,

including The Times Center in New York, the

Kölner Philharmonie, deSingel in Antwerpen,

the TROMP festival, they have been invited to

EDUCATIONEducatie

TROMP is committed to the development of repertoire and the recruitment of young talent. For educational activities TROMP works with local partners CKE, Cultuurstation, Fort van de Verbeelding, Kekketek, Percussion Friends and the

South Netherlands Philharmonic. TROMP is also part of an international network of percussion teachers in conservatories.

-TROMP Percussion Eindhoven maakt zich sterk voor de ontwikkeling van slagwerkers, repertoire en nieuwe aanwas van talenten in de dop.

Voor de educatieve activiteiten werkt TROMP samen met CKE, Cultuurstation, Fort van de Verbeelding, Kekketek, Percussion Friends en philharmonie zuidnederland. Daarnaast begeeft TROMP zich binnen een netwerk van

slagwerkdocenten aan muziekscholen en wereldwijde conservatoria.

Dutch conservatories take on the

challenge of writing a brand new

piece for percussion. All entries will

be performed by fellow students in

the TROMP festival November 15.

A winner is selected immediately

after the concert by an expert

jury including the chairman of the

TROMP board Marijn ten Harmsen

van der Beek, Davo van Peursen

of Donemus publishing and

composers Janco Verduin and

Mayke Nas, who wrote the

compulsory work for the semi-finals

of the TROMP competition.

Jonge componisten die studeren

aan Nederlandse conservatoria

gaan de uitdaging aan en schrijven

nieuw werk voor percussie. Alle

inzendingen worden tijdens TROMP

op 15 november uitgevoerd door

medestudenten. De winnaar van de

TROMP compositieprijs wordt direct

na het gekozen door een vakjury

met o.a. TROMP bestuursvoorzitter

Marijn ten Harmsen van der Beek,

Davo van Peursen van uitgeverij

Donemus en componisten Janco

Verduin en Mayke Nas die het

verplichte werk voor de halve finale

van het TROMP concours schreef.

Youth Jury Secondary education

College students from the Lorentz Casimir Lyceum

in Eindhoven choose their own winner during the

TROMP competition. Five students get instructions

from the chairman of the international expert jury.

They follow the participants throughout the

competition and write a jury report for each

candidate. In the Finale the youth jury awards their

winner with 'The Annelie', worth e 1.000 made

available by the Friends of TROMP.

Jeugdjury Middelbaar onderwijs

Leerlingen van het Lorentz Casimir Lyceum in

Eindhoven kiezen tijdens het TROMP concours hun

eigen favoriet. Ze volgen de deelnemers vanaf het

begin van het concours en schrijven voor iedere

kandidaat een juryrapport. In de Finale reiken zij

'De Annelie' uit ten waarde van e 1.000, mogelijk

gemaakt door de Vrienden van TROMP.

Drum je vrij! Primary school

Freedom is a hot topic at the moment,

with refugees and freedom of speech.

Language often plays an important

role in the matter. Music, and above all

percussion, is an ancient language that

everyone can speak and understand

without much difficulty. The educational

project Drum je vrij! by Percussion

Friends in collaboration with TROMP,

connects, stimulates cooperation and

provides insight into other cultures.

Drum je vrij! Basisschool

Vrijheid is een onderwerp dat momen-

teel zeer actueel is, met vluchtelingen

en de vrijheid van meningsuiting. Taal

is daarbij vaak belangrijk. Muziek,

bovenal slagwerk, is een oeroude taal

die iedereen kan spreken en begrijpen

zonder veel moeite. Het educatieve

project Drum je vrij!, samengesteld

door Stichting Percussion Friends in

samenwerking met TROMP, verbindt,

stimuleert samenwerking en geeft

inzicht in andere culturen.

Rhythmix Primary school

In preparation for the philharmonie zuidnederland concert with Percossa in the TROMP

2018 festival, Percussion Friends provided extra workshops at schools in a short version of

the Drum je vrij! educational project. The concert is a spectacular conclusion, to which the

students make an active contribution. A live show full of action, reaction and with music

by composers such as Ravel, Shostakovich and Kabalevsky.

Rhythmix BasisschoolAls voorbereiding op het concert van philharmonie zuidnederland met Percossa in het

TROMP 2018 festival gaf Percussion Friends een extra workshop op school in een

verkorte versie van het programma Drum je vrij!. Het concert is de spetterende afsluiting

waaraan de leerlingen een actieve bijdrage leveren. Een muzikale live show vol actie en

reactie en met muziek van componisten als Ravel, Sjostakovitsj en Kabalevski.

The TROMP Schoolyard Orchestra of Fort

van de Verbeelding involves children to

make music with unusual instruments

like cement tubs, tuned scaffolding pipes,

tuned beer bottles, shakers, tubes and

boards. These will be combined with

singing, rapping, clapping and beating.

The children give a performance in a

schoolyard concert for an audience of

parents, neighbours and friends.

Het Schoolplein Orkest van Fort van

de Verbeelding wordt uitgevoerd met

ongebruikelijke muziekinstrumenten zoals

cementkuipen, gestemde steigerpijpen,

gestemde bierflessen, shakers, klapkokers

en klankplanken. Daarnaast wordt er

gezongen, gerapt, geklapt en gestampt.

In het 'schoolpleinconcert' geven de

kinderen een show voor ouders, buren en

bekenden.


MUZIEKGEBOUW EINDHOVEN

Eindhoven is the proud home of one of the finest

concert halls in Europe. Today, Muziekgebouw

Eindhoven is justifiably regarded as one of the premier

European concert halls, attracting leading international

musicians. The ambience and excellent acoustics

have made Muziekgebouw Eindhoven an absolute

favourite spot for audiences and performers. Located

in Eindhoven city centre, it offers all the benefits of a

modern, state-of-the-art concert hall.

The two concert halls in the Muziekgebouw were

constructed in close collaboration with acoustic

engineers from the Eindhoven University of

Technology. Hence, the concert halls have become

great ‘instruments’ for the musicians performing on

its stages.

Eindhoven is de trotse thuisbasis van één van de

mooiste concertzalen in Europa. Muziekgebouw

Eindhoven is een eigentijds muziekgebouw met

een internationale allure. Een akoestische toplocatie

die een grote aantrekkingskracht uitoefent op

wereldberoemde orkesten en solisten. Jaarlijks vinden

ruim 160.000 muziekliefhebbers hun weg naar dit

bijzondere gebouw in het hart van Eindhoven.

De twee zalen in het Muziekgebouw werden gebouwd

in nauwe samenwerking met akoestici van de

Technische Universiteit Eindhoven. De concertzalen

zijn daarmee uitstekende ‘instrumenten’ voor de

musici die op het podium staan.

Several times a year, Club TROMP brings the finest crossovers

between percussion, electronic music, jazz, pop and new sounds.

Club TROMP scouts the most exciting places in the city and

initiates collaborations with both existing and new initiatives in

Eindhoven.

TROMP has gradually gathered a group of close friends over the

years. This circle of friends has become even closer since 1986,

when it formed an official foundation with the main objective of

stimulating interest in the TROMP Competition and Festival. This

is partly achieved by making various prizes available, such as the

Audience Award.

Many Friends of TROMP ensure that the competition participants

receive a warm welcome in Eindhoven and that they are able to

stay with a welcoming host family for the duration of the event.

Met uw support krijgt jong toptalent de kans het beste uit

zichzelf te halen en geeft u ons de slagkracht om toptalent in

de toekomst een podium te blijven bieden. Om u te bedanken

introduceren we graag Club TROMP!

Meerdere keren per jaar brengt Club TROMP de fijnste

cross-overs tussen slagwerk, elektronische muziek, jazz, pop en

nieuwe geluiden. Club TROMP speurt daarvoor naar de meest

spannende plekken van de stad en gaat nieuwe samenwerkingen

aan met zowel bestaande als nieuwe initiatieven in Eindhoven.

TROMP heeft in de loop der jaren een vaste vriendenkring

opgebouwd. Sinds 1986 heeft deze vriendenkring een hecht

verband gekregen in de vorm van een stichting. Doel is vooral

de belangstelling voor het TROMP Concours en Festival te

vergroten. Dit gebeurt onder meer door het ter beschikking

stellen van diverse prijzen, zoals de Publieksprijs.

Veel Vrienden van TROMP zorgen tijdens de concoursperiode

voor de gastvrije opvang van de concoursdeelnemers in

verschillende gastgezinnen.
