06 December 2019 Smart Phones/Mobiles 2020 The Victorian Government takes the safe and responsible use of digital technologies, student safety and wellbeing, and the development of social skills and positive behaviour, very seriously. On this basis, the Hon. James Merlino MP, Minister for Education, announced that a new mobile phone policy would take effect from Term 1 2020 - across all Victorian Government schools. Whilst the Victorian Government acknowledges that we live in a technology-rich world where mobile phones are an important communication tool, research has found that mobile phones can be disruptive in classrooms and open to misuse at school. The unregulated presence of mobile phones in classrooms can undermine students’ capacity to think, learn, remember, pay attention and regulate emotion. From Term 1 2020, students who choose to bring mobile phones to school must have them switched off and securely stored during school hours. Schools are required to develop a local Students Using Mobile Phones policy, which we have termed an ‘Acceptable Use’ policy which will be updated and shared with our children at the beginning of the school year. Resilience Project/Respectful Relationships I am pleased to share with you that in 2020 Kororoit Creek Primary School will become a partner school for the ‘Resilience, Rights & Respectful Relationships’ program. This Department of Education initiative is insightful, curriculum connected and builds on our children’s social/personal learning. This incentivised program will provide opportunities for our community to work within a variety of topics:

End of Year Assemblies We will have our final assembly for 2019 on Friday 20th December. Our Junior Assembly will take place at 9.15am, our Senior Assembly at 12.30pm. We will thank our current School Leaders for their hard work this year and also congratulate our new leadership group on their appointments for 2020. I look forward to seeing you all there. Please note: There will be no assembly next week. Christmas Concert I hope that all of our families have scheduled in our annual concert - Wednesday, 18th of December 2019. The concert will begin at 6.00pm sharp on the basketball courts. Students are encouraged to get into the festive spirit by dressing in their best Christmas attire. Our Music Team and grades have been working very hard to fine tune their performances. I look forward to seeing our families as we celebrate and begin to say goodbye to the 2019 school year. Year 6 Graduation Our departing Year 6 students will be honoured by their Graduation ceremony on Tuesday 10th December at Luxor Reception Centre, Taylors Lakes. Parents, can you please ensure that students are dropped off at 4.45pm where they will have dinner with their teachers and peers. Our ceremony for families and invited guests will begin at 7.00pm sharp. Please ensure you have your tickets with you. As our school community continues to grow, we must forward plan to ensure that guest numbers are equitable, hence our ticketing system. Year 6 Drumming Performance We are excited to have scheduled a drumming performance by our Year 6 students on Tuesday 17th December at 2.15pm The Year 6 students have been participating in weekly sessions with the esteemed Ray Pereira as they learn about the history of drumming, the important connection between teamwork and rhythm, and the process behind composing and developing a performance. To showcase the skills learnt by our students, we are holding a Year 6 Drumming Showcase on Tuesday 17th December in the Gym at 2:15pm. This is a great opportunity for our Year 6 parents to come and watch their child perform as part of a group in their final week of primary school.

ART This term, the Grade One and Two students have been inquiring into structure.

They have been exploring paper manipulation and alongside a wider range of techniques they can use to create their dream playground or an Australian landmark such as Uluru, The Sydney Opera House or even Kororoit Creek. The students have developed paper manipulation techniques including, curling, ripping, cutting, fringing and scrunching in order to create different effects within their three-dimensional models of these landmarks, as well as adding life and colour to demonstrate their creativity in the art room. Next students will be testing and exploring with a range of construction materials including cardboard and icy pole sticks, alongside their acquired paper manipulation skills to create a structure of their choice.

FRENCH This term, the prep students have been working on the alphabet in French. They have used playdough, magnetic letters and have been practising writing the letters on a whiteboard to enhance their learning. They have listened to the alphabet song in French and can now sing along. They have also attempted to apply their knowledge of the alphabet to pronounce French words correctly. Furthermore, the prep students have also learnt that French originates from France and that there are several countries around the world that speak French too. At the end of the unit, they have written a story about themselves that was published on Seesaw.

MUSIC All classes are practising hard to ensure they are ready for the upcoming Christmas concert. Students are continuing to inquire into how performers can impact an audience and the strategies and routines of effective performers. Students will be performing their Christmas song with singing and choreographed actions. The date for the concert is Wednesday the 18th of December. The concert will begin at 6pm.

PE Recently, students have started the 6th unit of PE for the year “Invasion Games.” During this unit,

students will be exploring the skills involved in a variety of sports such as Netball, Basketball, Hockey, Football and Soccer. Students will also explore how they can effectively work in a team by sharing a variety of roles and positions. The older students will also explore how they can develop and apply different strategies as a team to try and achieve success. These strategies include moving into open space to receive a pass, as well as transitioning from defence and attack to create a scoring opportunity.
