We are in

the middle

of a Disciple

Heritage

emphasis in

our Sundayworship

services. We

are trying to

appreciate

the finer aspects of our Disciples of Christ

background. Many of us are not as

familiar with the wonderful history of our

denomination and we want to increase

our awareness and celebrate who we are.

In the first two weeks, we have

emphasized our focus on unity, our

commitment to lay leadership, and this

Sunday we will look at our regard foreducation. Our founders all placed

a heavy emphasis on education and

learning. Their commitment to scripture

was strong, but it was a commitment

rooted in educating themselves about the

Bible. So all were Greek and Hebrew

scholars and all were disciplined readers.

They studied their Bibles. And thats

what it takes for us to agree to disagree.

We can have different views of scripture,but we must be able to think through

what scripture means to each of us.

So our founders established schools.

And they became teachers. Alexander

Campbell founded Bethany College

on his farm in West Virginia. It still

stands today as an institution dedicated

to educating our young people both

scripturally and in the world. Other

smaller schools have survived over the

yearsTransylvania University (no, not

Draculas alma mater!), Butler University,

Barton College, Chapman University,Northwest Christian University, just to

name a few, make up a list of many

Disciple-founded institutions of higher

learning. Of course, large schools like

TCU are more well-known (I wont dw

on TCU because I imagine youve hea

enough about it from me already), but

the dedication to education is the sam

Our founders also felt that educati

was important on the congregationallevel. And our church certainly bears

witness to that. Our teachers are

dedicated to helping all of our membe

come to a better understanding of thei

faith and how scripture informs their lif

journeys. Were celebrating our teach

on Sunday, but we need to also lift up

our commitment to an informed faith,

dedicated to Christs ministry.

We have a great deal to celebrate atFirst Christian Church Edmond in2012, especially close on the heels of

our energizing Renew experience thispast summer and fall. One of the trulyremarkable facets of our church is ourSunday School Education Program. Wewill spotlight that Education Program,and our volunteer teachers who lead thechurch school classes, in all services on:Sunday, January 22.

These teachers are the laity and clergywho study, research, practice and deliverlessons in each of our nine diverse adulteducation classes, the college class, andall the childrens and youth classes. They

give of their time generously, and some of

them even teach almost every Sunday ofthe year. They are the emissaries of Christunder the leadership of our outstanding

clergy. They are essential to sustaining thechurch as it is AND growing the churchfrom here. Future growth depends onadding classes, adding interested andenthusiastic teachers, and matching themwith new members and guests.

The Apostle Paul wrote in 1 Timothy4 that teaching is a valued spiritual gift tobe used for the faith. FCC is using that giftgenerously now and can richly expandthat in the future. Please join as one thisSunday to recognize and honor thoseservant teachers who give so much of their

faith time and talents to all of us.

International Affairs Seminar

and Bean Dinner...

The Tradition Continues

Join us on Sunday, January 22!

The International Affairs Seminar, or I.A.S., isa study trip to Washington D.C. and New York

City that exposes student participants to a larger worldview and challenges them to

gain an understanding of their responsibility as Christians in our world today. It is a trip

where faith, politics, and global issues come head to head, igniting deep discussion and

transforming lives. I.A.S. opens eyes, changes minds, and touches hearts!

Each year we host the annual IAS Bean Dinner to raise funds to financially suppor

our youth participants in this awesome ministry. This year we have four students attendin

the trip. Allyson Cain, Hallie Ball, Josh Biby, andTrevor Gibson will be traveling t

Washington D.C. and New York City during the week of March 17 through 24, joined by

sponsors Greg and Julie Bunton. The study theme for the trip this year is Bullying - an

important topic for todays youth.

Due to the generous donations of our church community, traditionally the BeanDinner has raised between $600 and $1900.

Please join us anytime between 10:00 a.m. and 1:00 p.m. on Sunday,

January 22 for beans, cornbread, slaw and fellowship, and know that you are par

of sustaining a very special event in the life of the youth of First Christian of Edmond!
