2016 SYDNEY CLASSIC YEARLING SALE Vendors

January 2016

“The Inglis Premier Yearling Sale has experienced consistent increases in all key indicators due to outstanding vendor

support from across Australasia. This has resulted in continually improved quality of bloodstock offered at the sale,” said Inglis Victorian Manager Simon Vivian.

“40 Premier graduates won 57 stakes races in 2015, including eight at Group 1 level. With results like these, it is obvious why the popularity of the Premier Sale continues to grow. We are confident the graduates of the 2016 sale will perpetuate this success and we head into the sale full of confidence in the product we have on offer,” added Vivian.

Inglis Premier has produced top line winners in all corners of Australia and across the globe, including Victoria Oaks winner Jameka, Perth’s Railway Stakes winner Good Project, Hot Snitzel, Pasadena Girl, Trust In A Gust, Shamal Wind, South Africa’s Champion Three-year-old filly Alboran Sea and Singapore Horse of the Year Stepitup.

The strength of the 2016 catalogue is sure to produce impressive results. With 755 quality lots to be auctioned on 28 and 29 February and 1 and 2 March at the Inglis Oaklands Complex in Melbourne, the sale features youngsters with pedigrees from Australia’s leading black type families. This includes 100 half or full relations to stakes individual winners, complementing the progeny of 98 stakes winning dams, 13 of which were successful at Group 1 level.

“Of the 13 yearlings out of Group 1 winners on offer at Premier, ten of them are fillies. This presents buyers with wonderful racing propositions that carry commercial residual value once their racing days are concluded,” added Vivian.

Proven stallions with strong representation (five or more) include Redoute’s Choice, Fastnet Rock, Snitzel, Sebring, High Chaparral, I Am Invincible, Not A Single Doubt, Medaglia d’Oro, Choisir, Bel Esprit, Hinchinbrook, Star Witness, Starspangledbanner, Commands and Reward For Effort.

Always creating significant interest each season are yearlings by first season stallions. In 2016 the freshmen crop is represented by an array of speed, brilliance, Classic and staying qualities. The progeny of Pierro, All Too Hard, Excelebration, Ocean Park, Dalakhani, Americain, Animal Kingdom, Delago Deluxe, Your Song, Bullet Train, Harbour Watch, Niagara, Needs Further, Reliable Man, Squamosa and Super Easy are to be offered at the sale and are sure to be in demand.

Several youngsters from the first crop of All Too Hard, a half-brother to none other than

fellow champion Inglis graduate Black Caviar, are sure to attract buyers’ attention. One of the many highlights is Lot 109, a daughter of the dual Australian Horse of the Year Makybe Diva. Other progeny from All Too Hard’s first crop include a daughter of Group 1 winner and Champion Two-year-old Filly Headway plus a chestnut filly from the New Zealand Group 1 winning mare Juice.

Highlights from the first crop of superstar Pierro are Lot 126, a half-brother to Group 3 winner Hvasstan and Lot 380, a half-brother to multiple Group 1 winner Trust In A Gust. 12 other siblings to Group 1 winners will also be offered including half or full relations to Pear Tart, Mirjulisa Lass, Arapaho Miss, Cedaberg, Bel Mer, and Faint Perfume.

In addition to Makybe Diva, Group 1 winning dams with progeny at the sale include Oaks winners Small Minds, Miss Keepsake, Vitesse Dane, Cinque Cento, Apercu and Champion New Zealand Weight-For-Age performer Champagne.

Champion Sprinter and fellow Inglis Premier graduate Starspangledbanner amongst a quality draft of seven youngsters.

Now a resident stallion at Rosemont Stud, Starspangledbanner will be represented by five of his progeny amongst a stellar draft of 35 youngsters, all being offered by Anthony Mithen’s magnificent Gnarwarre stud farm.

One of the features of the sale, the Blue Riband Session, will be conducted as the final 48 lots of Day 1. This will enable the large crowd to witness what has become an integral, exciting and successful part of the Premier Sale. These Lots have been expertly selected by Inglis’ Bloodstock team on

pedigree and conformation to excel at three-years-old and older, over distances of 1600m and further. They are considered to be ideal candidates for the valuable Three-year-old Classics, middle distance and staying races.

The session includes Lot 115, a colt bred for the first Tuesday in November being by 2010 Melbourne Cup winner Americain from a daughter of Bart Cumming’s great cup winner Let’s Elope. Another interesting inclusion is Lot 119. To be offered by Rosemont Stud, the colt from Port Providence is one of only four progeny from the 2014 Southern Hemisphere crop of Champion sire Shamardal, and is a half-brother to three international winners.

“With the Inglis team having successfully canvassed buyers from local, national and international markets we look forward to an outstanding buying bench at Premier,” Vivian added.

All yearlings offered at an Inglis Select Yearling Sale, including the Inglis Premier Yearling Sale, are eligible for entry into the lucrative $5 million Inglis Race Series covering their 2YO, 3YO and 4YO racing seasons. For more information visit inglis.com.au/races

2016 MELBOURNE PREMIER YEARLING SALE

February 2016

Adam Sangster, Principal of Swettenham Stud and Thoroughbred Breeders Victoria Committee Member, is very excited

for the upcoming yearling sales where the first crop of 2010 Melbourne Cup winner Americain will be unveiled.

“I’m overwhelmed by the amount of support that breeders have already given to this incredible racehorse. To win a Melbourne Cup in the fashion that he did, it’s not surprising. He has been supported across the world with his progeny now in training in Florida, having been bred by Calumet Farm in Kentucky, and three of his offspring being trained by world-renowned trainer Dermot Weld. This is indicative of his class, temperament and durability as an athlete, all of which we are sure he will pass on to his progeny,” comments Sangster.

“At Swettenham we’re absolutely thrilled to be standing Americain, and his first yearlings are very well-represented at the Premier sale,” Sangster added.

26 yearlings by Americain have been catalogued in the 2016 Inglis Premier Yearling Sale, including four in the Blue Riband Session.

Colleen and Kevin Bamford raced Americain in conjunction with Gerry and Val Ryan, and will offer nine of his progeny through their Daisy Hill Breeding and Investments operation, including a grand-daughter of Let’s Elope, winner of the Mackinnon Stakes and each of the Australian, Caulfield and Melbourne Cups.

“We bought the mare, Paris Tryst, specifically to send to Americain, and with such a close connection to two Melbourne Cup winners, Lot 115 is a very special colt,” Colleen Bamford said.

“It’s about time we refocused on breeding stayers again in Australia, and Americain

obviously has the potential to produce these of the highest class. He is passing on his outstanding conformation to his foals, and this was surely one of the factors that kept him sound over his racing career,” Bamford added.

The great Makybe Diva was all that stopped Jeune becoming the sixth Melbourne Cup winner to sire a winner of the famous race, as his son On A Jeune finished a length second behind the champion mare in her third Cup. A daughter of Makybe Diva is among the 48 lots in the Blue Riband Session that will close out the opening day of the Premier Sale this year.

The Cox Plate is another of Australia’s major races that offer great riches over intermediate and staying distances. Dual Cox Plate winner So You Think is represented at Premier by 26 yearlings from his second crop, with eight of them featuring in the Blue Riband Session, including a filly from a half-sister to 2007 Cox Plate winner El Segundo.

Sam Hayes’ family is synonymous with success in Australia’s elite races and the Cornerstone Stud Managing Director sees a big future ahead for resident stallion Dalakhani, who has been a huge success in Europe and has his first Southern Hemisphere crop heading to yearling sales this year including a colt from the family of Group 1 Australian Oaks winner Rising Romance.

“Dalakhani is already a resounding success in Europe, and his son and first season sire Reliable Man is already experiencing wonderful sales success closer to home. We’re honoured to be standing such a superb proven sire. Very rarely are proven stallions with such breed-shaping potential made available to Australian breeders,” said Hayes.

“Rising Romance was wonderfully successful over distance, so having her colt in the Blue Riband Session, coupled with the fact that a limited number of Dalakhani’s first crop are being offered for sale in Australia only adds to the interest in his stock,” added Hayes.

The Blue Riband Session was initiated in 2013 to support breeders of Classic types designed to excel at three-years-old and older, over distances of 1600m and further. A natural complement is the $250,000 Inglis Cup, the longest sales restricted race in Australia, positioned early in the Spring Carnival making it an ideal stepping stone for four-year-old Inglis graduates to greater spring riches.

Melbourne Cup winners have produced Melbourne Cup winners on five occasions, and while others search overseas for the next winner, Australian breeders are making a resurgent effort to ensure the lion’s share of future Derbies, Oaks, Plates and Cups are won by a home-grown product.

VICTORIAN manager for Inglis, Simon Vivian has been a successful bloodstock agent andauctioneer for many years. He has worked with

some of the best in the business including David Colesand Peter Heagney and has travelled around Australiaand abroad working in the industry that he loves.

Q: Simon can you tell us a little about yourchildhood and any early racing influencesyou had?

A: “I was born and bred and raised in Adelaide, alongwith a brother and two sisters. I spent the bulk of my life in a suburb called Kensington Gardens, which is in the eastern suburbs of Adelaide.

“My father Peter was a very good Australian Rulesfootballer in the SANFL, he was captain of a successfulclub called Norwood. He had a great love of sports in general, including racing. It was my maternalgrandfather Syd Conlon though who really got himinto punting, so they were always mad about that. I got interested in racing in October 1964 when

I was seven. It was Caulfield Cup day and my fathersaid to me ‘I will give you £1 if you can pick thewinner of this race.’ Well it happened to be the Cupand I selected a horse called Yangtze. This horse was a three year-old who had been bred in South Australia, was trained in South Australia and ridden by a young South Australian apprentice called John Stocker.

“Yangtze got the money, and so did I, and it stimulated me from that point on, almost likesomething flicked a switch. Of course my interest was fuelled further by my father and grandfather firstly

because of their punting, but also because Dad had gotinto ownership then too. He had some success withowning some pretty good horses along the way.

“I even had dreams of becoming a jockey, but mychances were ruled out as I continued to grow. At theage of 13 I was in strife! As I am now 6’2”, I well andtruly missed the boat there.”

Q: So when you left school, did you go straight into the workforce or go to university?

A: “I did one year of tertiary education to studyproperty valuation, but I didn’t really enjoy that. I had thought it would be a job that would pay a bit of money, but really what is the point if you don’t enjoyit? Irrespective of what the income could have been, I really couldn’t see myself having a future there.

“My father at that time had been buying someracehorses in South Australia and had a workingrelationship with a man called David Coles who ranColes Bros, a South Australian yearling selling agency. As I had always been passionate about being involvedin the industry, my father asked David did he have anypositions available.

“Back in those days we didn’t have the advantage of having a company like Arion to provide us withpedigrees. We had to research pedigrees by goingthrough the Stud Books and Turf Registers and handwriting each one that appeared in a catalogue. So thatobviously required sales companies to have teams of young people who would do all of that research and writing up. I was very lucky that at that pointthere was a position available, so I commenced work at Coles Bros at the end of 1976. We were working out of an office in Currie Street in the central businessdistrict of Adelaide.”

Q: And how long were you working at Coles Bros?

A: “Well around the end of 1979 David ended upleaving Coles Bros (or Dalgety bloodstock, as it wasthen re-named) and started up a rival company calledAustralian Breeders Co-operative Society Ltd(otherwise known as ABCOS). Some of us in thepedigree department followed David to ABCOS and I remained with the firm until the mid-part of 1984when I moved to Perth for two years to manageGoodwood Bloodstock.

“In that period I was married to my wife Carleen andwent overseas to gain more experience. David Coleskindly granted me leave of absence and I worked forTattersalls in England in 1980. It was fantastic, just a great period of time. Whilst in Newmarket, however,we learned that Carleen was expecting, so somedecisions had to be made.

“We were keen not to be there during the latter partof her pregnancy so we returned home and our firstchild, Adam was born in April 1981. We also have a daughter Sarah, who was born in 1982. Adam is nowthe CEO of the Professional Footballers’ Association(PFA), which is to do with soccer, not Australian Rules.Sarah is a personal trainer and part-time actress.”

Q: And what made you move back to Adelaide again?

A: “By mid-1986 the kids were four and five years oldand I’d always thought that I didn’t want to move themaround too much. I hadn’t been planning on living in Perth forever so I thought it was probably the righttime to come back to Adelaide and get the kidsestablished in school. My time in Perth was fantasticthough and it was one of the highlights of my career. But from a family point of view, we wanted to be backin Adelaide where our extended family were.”

Q: So what was the next career move forSimon Vivian?

A: “I then opened my own private bloodstock agencyreferred to as Simon Vivian Bloodstock Pty Ltd. I spenta lot of time working in conjunction with DenisRoberts, who was originally one of my first bosses at Coles Bros. He had also gone out on his own and thetwo of us began working with each other and shared an office. It turned out to be a very successful move.

“I was also invited at that time by Tony Fleiter, thegeneral manager of Dalgety Bloodstock (now Inglis) in Melbourne, to come across and auctioneer for them.Dalgety was ultimately bought out by Inglis, who I now work for, and interestingly enough I am nowsitting in the same seat where Tony was sitting whenhe asked me to come and work for them!”

Q: And how did you come to branch out intoauctioneering? Was it something you hadalways thought you would like to do?

A: “I guess when you are a young bloodstock agent you tend to look up to the guys that are doing theauctioneering work and for me the best was my bossDavid Coles, he was just a fantastic auctioneer. One day he said to the three boys who were in thepedigree department, did we want to have a crack atauctioneering? We all had a bit of a try and I was reallythe only one who really enjoyed it, so I kept at it.”

Q: So what would be some necessaryqualities for a potential auctioneer?

A: “Well the first thing David Coles said to me was‘you’re a chance at being an auctioneer because you’vegot a voice like a foghorn!’ so I suppose to some degreeyou might need a voice that’s got some depth to it. Butreally at the end of the day, the most important thing is you must have a good knowledge of the product you are selling. So obviously you need knowledge of pedigrees, knowledge of racing, knowledge of conformation and also of the client base. It’ssomething that even after 30years you are still alwayslearning and striving to better yourself.

“So much of it is based around awareness of vendors’needs and requirements, their characters, you also have to be similarly aware of your buyers’ needs andcharacters. Just an overall knowledge of what’s requiredby everyone I guess.”

Q: So how did you end up working at Inglis?

A: “Well I worked at Simon Vivian Bloodstock for 10 years, from 1986 to 1996 and then I went to workfor Queensland Bloodstock Breeders Sales (QBBS) in Brisbane. I worked there for three years out of thefirm’s office in Ascot and then in 1999 I made the moveto live in Victoria for the first time. While I was in Brisbane I had kept Simon Vivian Bloodstock PtyLtd active, so when I returned from Brisbane I cameback to work for my own agency again.

“I was then also asked at that time by Magic Millionsto do some consulting auctioneering work. I said I would, provided I could remain in Victoria, whichwas agreed to. I was with Magic Millions for threeyears and it turned out to be very successful. My focusprimarily was working with Grant Burns who was theMagic Millions rep in Adelaide and we were basicallyresponsible for the Magic Millions Yearling Sales in Adelaide and it was a very good time for thecompany during that period.

“In 2004 I was approached by Peter Heagney at Inglisin Melbourne to see if I would come and work for thecompany. That was obviously a situation where I couldfully galvanise my working career based in Melbournewhere I was living. Peter was another graduate of the

David Coles ‘school’, so I had actually worked and soldwith Peter on a number of occasions during the past 30 years and so had become close work colleagues andbecome very close friends. So for me to walk in hereand work with Peter, it meant I was also working withone of my closest friends in the industry.”

Q: So with you being in the business of selling racehorses for a number of years, have you ever been involved in ownership of any yourself?

A: “Yes, I’ve been involved in the ownership of anumber of horses over the years, nothing outrageouslysuccessful. But I had a very small share in a horsecalled Kenvain, who won an Oakleigh Plate, and alsoin a good little race mare called Just Polite. She wonthe Kingston Town Stakes in Sydney at Gr.3 level, theyare probably the best ones I’ve been involved with.”

Q: From your own perspective, what is it about the racing industry that you enjoyso much?

A: “Well there are a couple of things I would say here. When it comes to racing, pretty much all men areequal. There’s the opportunity for you or I to race a champion, just as there is for John Magnier or SheikhMohammed to race a champion. There’s no provenrecipe for anyone to have an advantage in buying that champion. Yes, one person may have more of a financial advantage than the next, but we’ve seenhorses such as Takeover Target come from very humblebeginnings. On the racetrack I really think that all menare even.

“The other part is that when it comes to horse racing(not so much in the breeding industry of course), mostof the people involved do not race horses as theirprimary source of income. So I’ve had the opportunityto meet people like Robert Sangster and Robert Holmesa Court, big businessmen that ordinarily I would nevermeet. And the same with somebody like a horse trainer, who wouldn’t generally meet someone like KerryPacker. David Hayes probably wouldn’t have a phoneconversation with the Queen if he wasn’t involved inthis industry. It just really gives us the chance to speakto people that we normally wouldn’t have any access to, and we are speaking to them about their hobby, theirpassion. We get to meet such a broad cross-section ofpeople in our community, from those who spend fromone or two hundred dollars for a small share in a cheaplittle horse to the financially elite who spend millions of dollars on the best bred horses available.”

Q: What would be some advice that youcould give somebody who was interested in a career in the racing industry?

A: “I would say the first thing would be to decidewhich part of the industry your passion is with. Therereally are two distinct areas, which are of course theracing side, where you could get a job working with a race club or Racing Australia or Racing Victoria forexample, in an administrative role. You might evenwant to start off as a stable hand and work your waythrough to working in the office of a racingestablishment, ultimately becoming a racehorse trainer.

“The other side of course is the breeding industry, where you could be employed at a stud farm, a salesoffice, selling stallion nominations or marketing of yearlings for example. When a young person comesto me for advice, I try to determine right from the startwhere their absolute passion lies and then I encouragethem to try and approach people in that area and seewhat positions are available. You’ve got to be prepared, though, to start at the bottom and work your way up. Do the hard yards and learn as much as you canfrom those who are successful.” n

What are Arrowfield’s best recent graduates from the Premier Sale?

We’ve sold 18 stakes performers at Melbourne Premier since 2010, including Group 1 winners Hot Snitzel, bought for $60,000 by Triple Crown Syndications; Snitzerland, a $125,000 purchase by Darby Bloodstock; and Singapore champion Stepitup, knocked down to trainer Cliff Brown for $90,000.

It’s definitely a sale where buyers can pick up quality for a value price: those 18 stakes-performed Arrowfield graduates have earned almost 7 times their sale-ring cost.

Another example is Blizzard, bought by Ricky Yiu for $75,000 – he’s now won six races and more than $A1 million in Hong Kong.

Also, yearlings sold by Arrowfield have won six Inglis Series races worth more than $1.1 million since 2011. That’s the kind of experience we want owners and trainers to have!

If you’re encouraging someone to buy at the Melbourne Premier Sale what do you say?

I say, “It’s well-pitched by Inglis as a strong mid-range sale, where buyers can usually find what they want in any category from precocious types to stayers, without blowing their budget. Most of the new and desirable stallions are represented in the catalogue, the sale produces plenty of stakeswinners & city winners and the Inglis Race Series is another excellent reason to buy.”

What’s your approach to selecting sires and planning matings for your mares?

Choosing the stallions we stand at Arrowfield is the first step for us – we then select or buy the mares that we think are going to suit him on type and pedigree, and maximise his chance of leaving top racehorses.

Because we back the Arrowfield stallion roster with almost all of our own mares, those yearlings make up the majority of our drafts. The exceptions are horses out of mares we’ve recently bought in foal, or that we’re happy to offer on behalf of good clients. That’s how we came to sell Australian & Hong Kong Group

winner Not Listenin’tome to George Moore.

When do you begin your sale preparation? What methods do you use?

A yearling’s preparation really begins before the mare conceives, so the work of our farm, stallion and broodmare teams is as important as what we do with each horse in the three months before the sale.

My experience as a trainer means I’m always looking at our yearlings as future athletes, so we work to ensure they develop the bone, muscle, and bio-mechanical efficiency they’ll need to do the job.

Physical fitness is essential to help them cope with the demands of travelling to the sale and parading for several days on end. It’s a great test of their temperaments and by the time they’re sold they are ready to be racehorses.

What are some of the top lots in your draft?

Lot 328, All American-Salutations colt – this is the half-brother to last year’s $300,000 colt bought by George Moore and is another really nice type out of the mare. The family has also come up with this season’s stakes-placed 2YO Pearl Congenial.

Lot 404, Redoute’s Choice-Tripled colt - from a General Nediym half-sister to Group 1 winner Triple Honour, this colt is one of the real improvers in our draft, with plenty of size and scope.

Lot 450, Redoute’s Choice-Anadan colt – a well-balanced type with striking looks, from a winning Anabaa daughter of Group 1 winner Demerger.

What are your freshman sire picks?

No prizes for guessing that we’re keen on Animal Kingdom! We have three fillies and three colts by him catalogued for Melbourne Premier, while Glentree Thoroughbreds will offer the Armed For Action filly, and Musk Creek Farm will present the colt out of Miss Diagnosis.

Lot 413, the filly from Queensland Oaks winner Vitesse Dane, is stunning, a miler type with lots of quality and a great example of

what Animal Kingdom can leave to Danehill-line mares.

Lot 17, the filly from Free To Rein (by Redoute’s Choice) has the scope to grow into a classic type.

Lot 20, the colt from Miss Finland’s half-sister Frenchs Forest is a more compact individual, correct, with a good shoulder and rein.

When in Melbourne where do you go to dine out after a day at the sales?

Former Arrowfield marketing manager Frank Pollio is in charge of my eating-out in Melbourne, so I rely on him to recommend the best place for pizza!

Already they have enjoyed success, last year selling for $210,000 an imposing More Than Ready colt (now named Long Juan Feng) to a

client of Warwick Farm trainer Bjorn Baker. At this year’s sale Devon Park will be

represented by four well put together, well related yearlings who stud manager Tom Balshaw describes as “a fantastic group.”

“They are all lovely horses with terrific temperaments,” he said, looking forward to following his charges as they make their way from the sales to the new homes, set to follow in the footsteps of such talented Devon Park graduates as Lady Of The Pines, Caledonian Boy, Nine Tales and Rockets Galore.

Situated in the picturesque Yarra Valley, Devon Park is home to a select group of broodmares who produce up to ten foals a season, this year in foal to the likes of Zoustar, Sebring, Myboycharlie, Pluck, Reset, All Too Hard, Dawn Approach and Casino Prince.

Amongst those stallions are a few exciting newcomers with Balshaw, who visits the Hunter Valley once a year to inspect mares, foals and stallions, labelling Zoustar, All Too Hard and Dawn Approach as “the stand-outs”

of horses yet to be represented by runners. “We are looking forward to taking their progeny to future sales,” he said.

In the meantime he is busy preparing the Premier draft who began their road to the sales in early November. “At first it is just a matter of bringing them in and out, in and out. We don’t get really serious until early January and even then they are not pushed too hard, it is too easy for them to sour if the process is too demanding. At the weekends they go out, we don’t touch them at all, and they love that.”

“It’s amazing how many people came up to us last to comment on how quiet our colts are. It is just a result of us keeping them happy.”

Devon Park’s yearlings are the result of careful planning with the opinions of trusted outside experts such as Peter Orton taken into consideration. “Each year after I get back from the Hunter Valley Betty and I sit down and talk to other people and throw ideas around. We know we have ticked the right boxes when we have found a stallion we all agree on.”

Having fared well with More Than Ready last year, Balshaw is excited about Devon

Park’s two Melbourne Premier yearlings by him; lot 37 a brother to the stakes placed Ready To Fight and terrific winner Red Bomber and lot 379 a filly out of the Group Three placed Sublime Girl.

The latter (from the family of dual Group One winner King’s High) is a sister to last year’s $210,000 colt and, says Balshaw, she is “a better type. She is a big, strong, powerful, correct filly and she has a beautiful temperament.”

The colt, whose grandam is the South African star Tracy’s Element (dam of Australian Horse Of The Year Typhoon Tracy), is also well regarded, described as “an absolute stunner. “Everyone who sees him says ‘wow!’ He is such an athlete.”

A late November foal, lot 706 by Testa Rossa out of the winning Royal Academy mare Academy Winner is, due to her birth date “a bit behind the others. But she is a very neat, speedy type just like her dam.”

Lot 736, a Mossman colt, is out of Academy Winner’s half-sister Cosmic Challenge. Hailing from the family of Burst, he is a “not overly big colt but solid with a good walk. He is a lovely bodied horse with a very relaxed attitude.”

Devon Park StudA quality draftThe orange and blue silks of Devon Park Stud’s Betty and the late John Hoare have been gracing Victoria’s racetracks for years but it has only recently that the Yarra Glen farm has been consigning at the Melbourne Premier.

February 2016

Sarah Devcich told Bluebloods “We were very proud to be awarded the best presented draft last year at Melbourne Premier, in what was

essentially our first draft there. The year before we brought one yearling over, and this year, we have a quality draft of six yearlings.” The farm also sells locally, and when asked about why they picked this sale, Devcich said “It is a business decision to spread our risk between different sales, as well as to get more of our stock into the Australian market. The Melbourne Premier Sale is well timed, as it gives the yearlings an extra month of growth. It is also a strong market for stamina bred types providing a good option for the right horse.” The first horse they offered at this sale back in 2014 is the three year-old Dreaded (Shocking – Walsburgs Dream, by Pentire) who recently placed at just his second start for trainers Lee & Anthony Freedman.

Marc Devcich gave Bluebloods an overview on each of the six yearlings they are bringing to this sale, with his standout type being Lot 405 by Foxwedge from True Malt (Elusive Quality). This colt is the first foal of a winning mare who is a daughter of dual Listed winning sprinter Strawberry Malt (Lion Hunter). Devcich said “An eye catching, precocious type that is a typical Australian two year-old type, he is powerful, well muscled with a great attitude.”

Well related is Lot 460, by popular freshman sire All Too Hard from group placed Ashenti

(Ashkalani) who is the dam of Gr.2 winner of nine races (to date) Riva de Lago (Encosta de Lago). This is the family of two year-old Gr.1 winner Not Related (Family Ties). Devcich said “A sharp type of colt, very much a low slung, get up and go sort with lots of muscle that should go early.”

A colt with an interesting pedigree, bred 2mx3f to Danehill, is Lot 246 by Commands out of Oneworld Onedream (Galileo), a young winning mare whose dam is a Danehill half-sister to Gr.1 winner Sydney’s Dream, best known as the dam of good sire Charge Forward. Devcich said “This colt is very easy on the eye, typical of the sire, a good looking, well balanced colt.”

Lot 641 is by Nicconi from Paymistress (Fusaichi Pegasus) who is a winning full sister

to Gr.2 winner and Gr.1 placed Flying Pegasus. Paymistress has already left a two year-old winner (Remunerator by Lope de Vega), and Devcich says “He is a colt with a lot of quality and presence, with a good attitude that will suit plenty of buyers.”

One for the Hong Kong market, perhaps, is Lot 170 by Reliable Man out of Mahamaya (Bahhare) who is a full sister to Gr.1 winner Hurrah, and to Gr.3 Sha Tin Trophy winner Best Gift, who also had five Gr.1 placings in Hong Kong. Devcich said “This colt is a lot like his father, with plenty of presence. He is a fluent walker with a good attitude and is a real classic type of colt.”

The only filly in the draft is Lot 114, by Champion galloper So You Think out of winning mare Palos de Lago (Encosta de Lago). This is the first foal of Palos de Lago, who is a half-sister to Gr.1 WS Cox Plate winner El Segundo (Pins) who won four Gr.1 events, and both are out of Gr.3 winner Palos Verdes (Oak Ridge). Devcich said “An Oaks type of filly that is attractive, covers a lot of ground, and has strong quarters and a good hip.”

Henley ParkSix of the bestNew Zealand’s Henley Park bred Gr.1 Vinery Stud Stakes winner Norzita (Thorn Park-Visique, by Quest for Fame) and this year will bring their third draft to the Inglis Premier Yearling Sale.

“They are an outstanding bunch of horses,” he said, “and I expect that we will do even better than we did last year.” Four of

Hillside’s yearlings fetched six figures at that sale, the farm achieving an excellent $100,000 Premier I average.

Hillside offer nineteen well bred, well grown yearlings this year including three by the late Commands. The first of those, lot 18 out of the Group Two winner Freestyle, was the final Commands foal born. Noting that “she has a positive outlook on life,” Ford said that “she does everything quickly and she gets better and stronger every day.”

Commands’ filly out of River Fairy (lot 300) is a half-sister to four winners out of a city winning half-sister to the Group One sprinter River Dove. “This is a great family that just keeps producing,” Ford said, noting that she is a 3/4 sister to exciting galloper Rule The River.

Line-bred to Eight Carat, the third Commands, lot 407, is a grandson of the dual Group winner Zanna. “I bought the mare specifically for Commands,” Ford said, adding that the first of her two foals by him fetched $135,000 last year. “And this colt is bigger, stronger, better.”

Ford is also taken by his two Medaglia D’Oro colts who are “both striking but in different ways.” Lot 122 out of an imported descendant of Fanfreluche is “the image of his sire. He was one of our best foals and is one of our best lots. He is a very appealing colt, black with a big white face and he has a huge walk on him.”

Meanwhile lot 510 out of a daughter of the champion mare Pipalong is “a real Classic shaped horse with unusual markings and colouring. He is going to mature into a really impressive horse.”

Not A Single Doubt is a proven sire of classy fillies and his two Hillside yearlings are “peas in a pod. They both eat and work and really look like they are going somewhere when they walk.” The first is lot 223 from the family of Samantha Miss, the second lot 467 a granddaughter of Group One mare Critic. Both are out of Pins mares, therefore line-bred to Easy Date, grandam of Not A Single Doubt and dam of Snippets.

Another by a son of Redoute’s Choice is lot 449, a Snitzel colt whose first four dams are black-type. “He is going to prove popular, he is a sharp looking colt very much like his sire.”

One of only four Fastnet Rock fillies in the sale, lot 198 is out of a half-sister to the Champion 2Y0 Holy Roman Emperor. “She is a beautiful filly with a gorgeous head. She is strong in shape, much like a Danehill and can she walk, she is all business.”

Hillside also have two grandsons of Fastnet Rock, lots 482 (half-brother to stakes winner Gold Force) and 690 (grandson of the stakes winner Lisa’s Game) both by Hinchinbrook. “They are both lovely colts with a real Fastnet Rock look.”

Another member of the Danehill line is lot 54, an All Too Hard half-sister to the Listed winner Jester’s Girl out of the stakes winner How Funny. “She is an absolute corker, she really covers ground and I have got a good feeling about her.”

Bred on a 3f x 3f cross of Flying Spur, lot 248 is a Sebring filly out of a daughter of the stakes winner Oomph. “She is typical of her family, a sharp, neat type.”

Bred along similar lines are lot 500 and lot 517, the former a Street Boss colt out of Chalk Ridge whilst the latter is a Street Cry colt out of that mare’s dam Corporate. Descendants of Best In Show, they have both impressed Ford. “The Street Cry is a very strong colt with plenty of bone, and he is a great walker with a terrific temperament. The Street Boss is the image of The Quarterback (a dual stakes winner for his sire).”

Each member of the Hillside draft is presented “for genuine sale” but Ford admits if he could keep one it would be lot 142, a High Chaparral colt out of the Group One mare Cinque Cento. “He is my favourite, a Classic looking colt, a horse with beautiful balance who walks like a ninja!”

Ford is also fond of lot 441, an Americain filly (“one of the most interesting horses in our draft”) whose dam Ajamais he purchased in France. And since then her half sister High Maintenance has proven her worth as the

dam of last year’s European Champion Older Horse Solow. “We have kept her first foal and she has serious speed.”

A handsome colt by Sepoy (lot 315) out of a half-sister to the stakes winners Stokehouse and Malasun is another likely to be keenly sought after whilst Ford thinks that lot 747 will prove “a great bargain for someone,” the Lope de Vega colt “a flashy type with four socks, you will see him coming!”

Hillside ThoroughbredsA Commanding draftWhilst pleased with the results of their first home-bred draft at last year’s Melbourne Premier, Hillside Thoroughbreds’ Peter Ford is confident that his 2016 selection is an even stronger one.

In a short space of time as a breeder of yearling sale horses Woodcock has enjoyed plenty of success with, to date taking 18 horses to the sales, 12 of those racing and

seven being winners.Consigning at the Melbourne Premier for

the last two years, Meredith Park has made a good start with its first graduate to hit the track being the $100,000 Snitzel filly Nostariel, a two-year-old winner last season.

Meredith Park again takes a Snitzel to the sale, as well as a High Chaparral colt whilst the other two members of the draft are by the outstanding New Zealander O’Reilly.

Woodcock’s sale kicks off early with lot 4, a colt by High Chaparral out of the three times winner Findaz Keepaz. A half-brother to the lightly raced and promising Tony McEvoy trained galloper Aravalli, he is from a family that has been producing not only high class gallopers but successful stallions, Findaz Keepaz’ stakes winning third dam Snow Finch being the grandam of Snitzel and Hinchinbrook.

“He is one of the nicest foals the mare has produced,” Woodcock said. “He is a typical High Chaparral, a nice, athletic colt who will just need a bit of time.”

Speaking of Snitzel, Meredith Park have lot 217, a bay son of the winning Montjeu mare Momisi. Sadly she is yet to have a great deal of luck at stud with promising progeny having things go wrong but Woodcock could not be happier with this “lovely, scopey colt.”

His dam Monmisi is a half-sister to the Group One winner The Party Stand from a family that has enjoyed plenty of success in Australia with the likes of Group One gallopers Mr Murphy and Kenvain.

The first of two O’Reillys is lot 24, a son of Glamouraad who sadly died shortly after producing this fellow. Also dam of the Hong Kong winner Melllifluent and the promising Northwest, Glamouraad was a half-sister to the stakes winner Galahad and to the dam of Fay Fay, a winner at Group Three level in New

Zealand before claiming the prestigious Hong Kong Derby-Gr.1 (2000m).

“Like most of his family he is a lovely type who will just need a bit of time to grow into himself. He is going to furnish into a very nice horse who should get over a bit of ground.”

Lot 308 is another who will improve with time, the daughter of the Daggers Drawn mare (noting that O’Reilly has had two runners out

of his daughters and both are winners) Roma Kabeel a “a big solid filly who is very much like her dam.”

And her dam, whilst unraced, showed good ability before fracturing her pelvis. Her dam is the three times winner Charmeel by Zabeel and it is to him that this filly has thrown.

“She is very much a Zabeel on type,” she said, mindful that O’Reilly and Zabeel cross exceptionally well, with the stakes winners-to-runners strike rate of that combination over 10%.

Both of Meredith Park’s O’Reillys are

descendants of their sire’s fifth dam Glamor Girl whose other descendants include Courtza, Our Pompeii, Ocean Park and Kapchat.

Meredith Park’s yearlings have been afforded a careful preparation, their education “starting from the day they are weaned. Our weanlings come in for a week or two over the winter so when they come in as yearlings it is not new to them.”

“We use treadmills which is great for trainers who use them as our horses never have any problems with them, or with barriers or trucks, they get used to things.”

“We tailor our yearling sale preparation for each horse, taking into account their mental and physical needs. Most are in for about 12 weeks and being a small farm we can handle them more than most.”

“I foal down our mares so I have known each of these horses since they were blobs on a screen,” she laughed, adding that the personal touch includes each yearling being known by its nickname; “they are never referred to as just ‘the Snitzel.’”

Keeping in touch with those who buy her horses, Woodcock has been gratified by the good feedback she has received and she is looking forward to another successful sale.

Meredith ParkThe personal touchThere is a New Zealand flavour to Meredith Park’s Melbourne Premier draft and that is of no surprise with the farm’s Susan Woodcock a big fan of horses from across the Tasman.

2016 MELBOURNE PREMIER YEARLING SALE Vendors

February 2016

Established in 2012 by passionate thoroughbred owner and breeder Ross Ferris whose background is in nursing homes, Two Bays Farm has

recently appointed gun horseman Rob Carlile as manager to help transform the privately owned property to a commercial boutique thoroughbred operation.

The beautiful pocket of land which boasts a brand new barn featuring ten boxes, four sand yards and boxes, plus a foaling down unit complete with boxes and yards, can comfortably cater for up to 100 horses at any one time, whether that be broodmares and foals, yearlings or spellers.

No stranger to preparing and managing prized bloodstock, Carlile has worked for many successful farms over the years including Darley, Three Bridges Thoroughbreds and Tweenhills managing horses such as Exceed And Excel, New Approach, Pierro as a yearling and the ill-fated $5 million dollar half-brother yearling to Black Caviar, and is excited with the challenge that lays ahead.

“Our aim is to raise and sell top quality yearlings that go on to be top quality racehorses, this of course takes time, careful planning, and a lot of hard work because at the end of the day the success of your farm is based on your brand running first past the post,” enthused Carlisle.

“The land here is fresh horse country, and we work hard on pasture management, and fertilising the ground.

“We follow biodynamic farming principles,

building soil carbon and biology levels with no synthetic fertilizers.

“Even though we’re relatively young compared to other farms, the property is highly productive and its rich pastures are a key component of nutrition and diet for our animals.”

Other key thoroughbred properties in the area include Musk Creek Farm – and in similar vein to them, foals at Two Bays can grow out naturally, and are able to exercise on the farm’s hills to foster tough and durable bones, tendons and muscles.

“There’s a lot of great food and wine producers in the area, and we’re hopeful that it’s only a matter of time before that translates to the thoroughbreds which come off this farm.”

Two Bays will be selling ten yearlings at the Melbourne Inglis Premier Sale and according to Carlile, here’s a sneak peek of some of their standouts:

Lot 11 Star Witness x For The Girls filly – she is super strong, and has a pedigree page which keeps getting better being linked to Group 1 winning colt Exosphere whose dam Altitude is a three-quarter sister to the dam of this filly.

Lot 389 Snitzel x Tangerine Dream colt – Snitzels can’t do anything wrong at the moment, and he’s a half-brother to Group 1 winning mare Pear Tart. He’s a very good walker and a really nice colt

Lot 451 Smart Missile x Annlea colt – a really nice moving colt with an attractive head, he’s done very well in his preparation

Lot 693 Super Easy x Twin Town colt – Super Easy is a half-brother to Terravista, Tiger Tees and Ball of Muscle so comes from a great speed family. This guy is a super little colt with a great action. He’s in the second session and I think he’ll be popular with trainers.

Two Bays will focus on increasing the quality of their broodmare band to join their stakes performed mares Marheta, Antique, Choice Words and Emma Princess, among others – so watch this space.

For more information on Two Bays Farm visit www.twobaysfarm.com.au.

What are some of your leading graduates from the Premier sale?

We have sold some nice horses from our Melbourne Premier drafts including Stakes winners Stirling Grove, Malasun and Stokehouse.

Two years ago we only sent four to Melbourne under the Kia Ora Stud banner, however of this select group came exciting South African three-year-old colt Brazuca. From just six starts he has won twice and has been narrowly beaten in three Group 1’s.

What is your approach to selecting sires and planning matings for your mares?

A combination of a few things. We like to follow up on certain crosses that have worked well previously but we will also try a cross that we feel would work well. Conformation and the horse’s physical make up is very important to us as well.

When do you begin your sale preparation? What methods do you use?

The yearlings generally have a preparation of about nine weeks. They are all hand walked and exercised on a horse walker. Each one is a little different and their preparation is tailored to suit each horse’s needs and level of development, as some require a little more exercise and building up. They are all groomed of an afternoon as well.

What are some of the top lots in your 2016 Premier draft?

We are extremely happy with our Premier draft this year and offer a very nice bunch of colts by All Too Hard, Sebring, Smart Missile, Foxwedge, More Than Ready and Stratum.

With All Too Hard winning three of his four Group 1’s in Melbourne, we were quite keen to send a few of his yearlings to Melbourne.

An early one to go through the ring is Lot 8 from the mare Flying Gigi. This filly has a lot of quality about her which is something

we have come to expect from All Too Hard’s progeny.

Lot 99 is another All Too Hard filly from the stakes-placed More Than Ready mare Legislature, who is a sister to Group 1 winner Carry on Cutie. She is a beautiful filly who was born a bit later, in mid-November, so for us she was a perfect choice to prepare for the Premier sale.

Lot 353 is a colt from Skye Gold and the last of the All Too Hards from our draft. He’s a really nice horse and very much like dad on type.

What are your freshman sire picks?

Our resident stallion, All Too Hard, of course!

They are already the talk of the sales and it was very pleasing to see him so well received at the Gold Coast Magic Millions and fetch top price for an Australian-based sire at the Karaka Premier.

They are already going to some headline trainers such as Peter and Paul Snowden, Team Hawkes, Chris Waller, Peter Moody, Gai Waterhouse, Mick Price, Gerald Ryan, Michael Freedman, John Moore, Robert Smerdon, Tony McEvoy, Phillip Stokes, John Thompson, Gary Portelli and Simon Miller, so we’re looking forward to the early reports coming out of these stables.

When in Melbourne where do you go to relax, dine out, after a day at the sales?

I quite like having a beer with mates at the Lincolnshire pub in Essendon.

THE success of unbeaten juvenile star Capitalistand his sire Written Tycoon have revivedmemories of one of the first, and best, shuttle

sires Last Tycoon (IRE). He was our Champion Sire in 1993-94 when his brilliant son Mahogany was at the height of his powers.

Unfortunately Last Tycoon was also a contemporaryof super sire Danehill, who would win the next threesires’ premierships, take a break for two seasons to allow NZ champion Zabeel his days in the sun, and then claim six more premierships in succession up to 2004-05. Danehill’s sons Redoute’s Choice (four),Flying Spur and Fastnet Rock (two) would then go on to claim seven of the next 10 titles with a break forEncosta de Lago (2007-09) and Lonhro (2010-11).

Last Tycoon (Try My Best-Mill Princess by Mill Reef),who died on June 30, 2006 at Arrow Stud in Japan, was at stud in Australia from 1989 until 2002 (missing1990, ‘91 and 1995, the latter southern season spent in NZ for 58 live foals) and left 719 live foalsincluding Blue Diamond/Australia Made Stakes winner Lady Jakeo, AJC The Galaxy winner and sire Magic of Money, eight-time Gr.1 winner and 1994Horse of the Year Mahogany (Australian Guineas,Lightning Stakes (2), AJC Derby, VRC Derby, QTCSires’ Produce, Castlemaine Stakes, Caulfield Guineas),dual NZ Gr.1 winner and champion sire O’Reilly, South

African Champion Tracy’s Element, triple Gr.1 winnerTycoon Lil and Blue Diamond winner and sireKnowledge. O’Reilly’s sons at stud include Alamosa,Sacred Falls and Shamexpress, all in NZ.

Last Tycoon’s European Gr.1 stars included Bigstone, short lived Ezzoud and Marju, who all had studsuccess, while Monde Bleu (GB), Just Awesome andIglesia were lesser stakes winners who had careers as stallions in Australia. The latter two died young but Iglesia’s branch continues via Written Tycoon.

Bred in Ireland at Richard C. Strauss’s Kilfrush Stud,Last Tycoon was put into training with Robert Collet at Chantilly and showed considerable ability as a sprinter with wins in the Prix d’Arenberg-Gr.3 in 1985 and the King’s Stand Stakes-Gr.1, NunthorpeStakes-Gr.1, Prix de Saint-Georges-Gr.3 and Prix duGros Chene-Gr.3 in 1986 before being shipped to theUS for the Breeder’s Cup Mile-Gr.1 in 1986 at SantaAnita, where he was given little hope at what wasbelieved to be an unsuitable distance, but where thethree year-old scored an upset win.

Rated Champion Sprinter in England, he was retiredto stud in 1987 (Australia 1989 and Japan 1995) andwas Champion First Crop Sire in Europe. His sire, TryMy Best (Northern Dancer-Sex Appeal by Buckpasser),was bred by E.P. Taylor and was England’s ChampionTwo Year-Old of 1977 when he won the Dewhurst

Stakes-Gr.1. He is best remembered as the sire of Last Tycoon and of Waajib (whose line continues in Europe via champion sprinter and Gr.1-winningjuvenile Royal Applause and his son Acclamation, the latter sire of shuttler Equiano (FR) and importedGr.2 winner Lidari (FR)).

Try My Best, a brother to El Gran Senor, is a grandsonof Best in Show and so has links to Redoute’s Choice as that mare is his fourth dam. The Gr.1 winnerBonaria is by Redoute’s Choice and from a Last Tycoondaughter as is Swettenham’s Stud’s Gr.1 winner Masterof Design, while NZ Derby winner Redoute’s Dancer is out of a daughter of El Gran Senor, showing thevalue of this best in Show duplication.

The Written Tycoon branch of this line comes viashort-lived Iglesia (Last Tycoon-Yodells by Marscay)who was bred by Geoff and Beryl White’s Bhima PtyLtd. The Whites raced many good horses, not the leastbeing Golden Slipper winner and champion sireMarscay (Biscay-Heart of Market (USA) by To Market)who carried their distinctive purple and white liveryand also a seven letter name, a feature of their runners.Iglesia’s best wins came in the Silver Slipper Stakes-Gr.2 and VRC Standish Handicap-Gr.2, in a courserecord of 1:07.16 for the Flemington straight 1200m,

PEDIGREE ANALYSIS Capitalist strengthens Tycoon’s line of credit

set on January 1, 2001 and still standing. He retiredwith six wins and four thirds plus a Golden Slipper-Gr.1 fourth in 20 starts, standing his first season at Neville Stewart’s Oaklands Stud in 2001.

His stakes placed dam was inbred to Star Kingdom3m,4m,5f, through Biscay, through her dam YodellingLady (by Paris Review by Noholme) and through herfourth dam Fairy Dream (Star Kingdom) and carries a line of Wilkes (FR) through Champagne Stakes/Sires’Produce and Rosehill Guineas winner Bogan Road.

Iglesia stood just six seasons (2001-2006), starting on a $6600 fee and rising to $22,000, the best of hisrunners being Gr.2 winners Written Tycoon and Nova Star and Gr.3 winners Helideck and Sanderson. It is fitting that Written Tycoon’s son Capitalist shouldwin the $2m Magic Millions 2YO Classic as MMstalwart David Chester was responsible for DaandinePastoral Company purchasing his dam Party Miss andalso recommended the mare be sent of Iglesia.

“Jim Griffiths was selling Party Miss, who was a handy winner of four races by Kenmare, and I suggested that Jim Clarke, who was QTC treasurer formore than 20 years and who owned Daandine PastoralCompany, should buy her,” David Chester said.

“Jim, who was also a major Queensland pastoralistthrough his company Clarke and Tait, with the Tait family of Dark Jewel fame, was a long-timethoroughbred breeder who mainly purchased modestlypriced mares for his broodmare band and had prettygood success.

“His daughter Jan, who has been coming to the racesand sales since she was a schoolgirl, took over the reinsof Daandine after her father’s death and she took up my suggestion to put Party Miss to Iglesia in themare’s sixth season at stud.”

Jan Clarke put the mare back to Iglesia the followingyear when the result was the unraced filly Invited whois now in the broodmare band of Turangga Farm’sStuart Ramsay (Ramsay Pastoral Company). She is thedam of Big Chance (Octagonal), 10 wins and runner-up in the Doomben Slipper. Daandine Pastoral hasretained a daughter of Party Miss in the shape of RedDazzler-sired Party Jewel who has a filly by Drumbeatsand a colt by Jet Spur in her first two seasons at stud.

Written Tycoon began his stud career in Victoria in 2007 after a career that saw him with two wins andthree seconds in 11 starts. He won an 1100m juvenileevent at Randwick and the Todman Slipper Trial-Gr.2(1200m) at Rosehill and was runner-up to star fillyFashions Afield over 1200m (1.25 lengths) in five runsat two when he was unplaced in the Golden Slipper-Gr.1 and Champagne Stakes-Gr.1. His best effort in three runs at three was a second (1.25 lengths)behind Media in the San Domenico Stakes-Gr.3(1000m, Randwick). He won two trials but wasunplaced in three runs as a four year-old and retired to stud at Eliza Park in Victoria in 2007, covering 118 mares ($8250) in his first season.

He was Champion First Season Sire in 2010-11 andhad huge support from broodmare owners with booksof 87 (2008), 118, 198 ($6600) and 152 ($11,000)before Eliza Park International made the decision to send him to Queensland for the 2012 season wherehe covered 107 mares at $15,400 (88 live foals). Not all his syndicate members were entirely happy with hismove to Queensland and a $3m sale saw him back in Victoria and with a new home, Woodside Park at Tylden, the following season. He covered books of 138 and 177 there at $13,750 and his fee shot up to $19,800 in 2015 when he looked after a book of 178.

Written Tycoon had 219 winners from 329 starters(66.6%) to January 18 for earnings topping $20m. His 12 stakes winners (3.6%) also include Gr.2 winners

Howmuchdoyouloveme (Celtic Swing), Rich Enuff(Spartacus), also runner-up in the Caulfield Guineas-Gr.1, the Gr.3 winners Tycoon Tara (Encores), VibrantRouge (West Point), Written Dash (Dash For Cash)and Trump (Black Minnaloushe) and the Listedwinners It Is Written (Danehill Dancer), Grand Tycoon(Grand Royale), Danger Close (Honours List), WrittenUp (Octagonal) and Stoker (Stratum, inbred 4fx5f to Vain) along with Capitalist.

Although the move to Queensland did not pleaseeverybody, it did allow Jan Clarke to send herbeautifully bred winning mare Kitalpha (NZ) (Fusaichi Pegasus (USA)-Compulsion by Danehill(USA)) to Written Tycoon in her second season at stud. The result being unbeaten Capitalist, who was knocked down to bloodstock agent James Harronfor $165,000 at the 2015 Gold Coast Magic Millionsfrom the Daandine draft on behalf of a high profilesyndicate including Newgate Stud, the Bateman andIngham families.

The colt is unbeaten in three starts including winningthe Breeders’ Plate-LR on debut by three lengths, running 57.09 for the 1000m, and has won more than$1.4m. His dam, who died in 2015, produced just fourfoals, the maiden performer Lushan (colt, NorthernMeteor) in 2012, Capitalist in 2013, a filly by Real Sagain 2014 (purchased from the Daandine draft by JamesHarron for $200,000 at the 2016 MM) and a filly by Smart Missile in 2015.

Kitalpha, inbred 3fx3m to Danzig and whose sire wonthe Kentucky Derby and is a son of Mr. Prospector andthe Danzig mare Angel Fever, hails from a family notedfor smart juveniles. Her dam Compulsion won the Blue Diamond Preview-Gr.3 at two and is a sister to Golden Slipper-Gr.1 winner Merlene (dam of SouthAfrican Gr.2 winner Merlene de Lago and second damof VRC Oaks winner Dear Demi). Their dam, BoldPromise (Luskin Star-Game Dame by Bold Aussie(USA)), also produced the VRC Newmarket-Gr.1 andMVRC Australia Stakes-Gr.1 winner Miss Pennymoney(Brocco (USA)) after a career on the track that saw her win eight races including the Magic Millions 2YOClassic-RL and the STC Reisling Slipper Trial-Gr.2. She

also won the Tea Rose-Gr.2, BATC Coca-Cola Classic-Gr.3 and was runner-up in the Flight Stakes-Gr.1.

Compulsion’s four winners include Listed winnerBrayroan (Zabeel) and stakes placed producer Ekali(Torrential (USA)). Her descendants also include$600,000 earner and Listed winner Red Excitement(Excites). City-placed Game Dame produced eightwinners, while her dam, Regal Crest (Sostenuto (ITY)-Regal Peace by Pipe of Peace (GB)), is a sister to multiple Gr.1 winner Regal Rhythm and to CurrentAffair, the dam of Gr.3 winner and Golden Slipperrunner-up Food For Love (dam of Lady Jakeo, Red Arrow, Able Choice).

Descendants of Lady Jakeo, a brilliant daughter of Last Tycoon mentioned earlier in this article, includethe Oakleigh Plate-Gr.1 winner Mrs Onassis (GeneralNediym), Miss Judgment (Strategic), Fifth AvenueLady (Fastnet Rock) and Aussies Love Sport (Redoute’sChoice). Family members could be a good choice forCapitalist when he heads to stud.

Regal Peace (ex Regal Gold by Gold Nib (GB)) wonthe VATC 1000 Guineas-Gr.1 and was runner-up in theVRC Oaks and AJC Oaks and is a half-sister to WiddenStakes-LR winner All Gold (Star Kingdom), who tookthis family to the US where her stakes winningdescendants included the imported Captain’s Gold(USA) (Riverman), dam sire of Golden Slipper winnerCalaway Gal (Clang). This is family C2 tracing to Yatterina (Yattendon-Kohinoor by Vanguard), bred in NSW in 1865. Yatterina is the fourth dam of March (Marble Arch (GB)), whose grandaughterRoyal Tray (by The Tetrarch son Tea Tray (GB)) is the ninth dam of Capitalist.

Although he is not a big fellow, the strongly builtCapitalist, a chestnut like his sire, has shown the speedand tenacity of a Golden Slipper contender. The Peterand Paul Snowden-trained colt is all the rage for ourrichest race for juveniles and has a pedigree and familyheritage that should make him suited to the pressuresof a high-powered race day. A Slipper win by thisunbeaten colt, who defeated Nikitas and Candika at theGold Coast (by 2.5 lengths, running 1:09.20 for the1200m), would certainly herald in a new era for theLast Tycoon line in Australia. n
