The award winning HLS is an LED handrail lighting system featuring a series of threaded stainless steel or anodised aluminium minipucks inserted flush into straight or curved handrail pipe, square sections or flat metallic surfaces. Each minipuck contains a Cree LED of the highest efficiency, optically controlled to provide an oval shaped beam with a sharp cut-off designed to obtain maximum illumination with a high degree of uniformity, minimal glare, light spill or wasted light.

The minipucks can be installed in new handrail or retrofitted into existing handrail.

Clever engineering and design give the minipuck a maximum light output of up to 123 lumens, and impressive luminous efficiency of up to 80 lumens/ watt.

We continue to push the boundaries in what is possible, by sourcing and utilising the brightest, most efficient LED emitters and state of the art driver solutions to maximise overall system efficiency.

We have the knowledge and experience to offer tailor-made, elegant driver solutions incorporating not only all major dimming protocols (DMX, DALI, DSI, PWM, 0-10V, leading and trailing phase edge dimming) but also emergency UPS supplies and solar PV.

All HLS minipucks are equipped with innovative shunt technology designed to localise unlikely failures to a single LED, thus protecting series integrity.

Colour Temperature & ColourThe minipuck is available in CCT between 2700K and 5300K with a maximum efficacy of 80 lumens/watt. A high CRI option is available in 2700K and 3000K as a custom option.

All single colours are available on special request. RGB minipucks and control options are available for custom applications.

Thermal Management Maintaining low junction temperatures is vital to LED longevity. By designing luminaires with the ability to effectively dissipate heat, the lifetime of the LED is significantly prolonged.

The unique and unrivalled thermal performance of the installed minipuck ensures junction temperature remains low to provide well over 70% lumen maintenance after 50,000 hours of illumination.

Public LightingThe majority of HLS installations to date are in public areas, as one of the main features of the minipuck is vandal resistance.

The threading locking mechanism of the HLS minipuck and the unique tool required for insertion and removal deters opportunistic vandalism.

The HLS minipuck is equipped with a hardy polycarbonate lens or a borosilicate alternative. Neither lens option can be removed or broken easily and the small size of the lens itself (8mm x 14mm) gives structural integrity.

The resilience of the fixture is emphasised with an impact rating of IK10 - European Standard EN62262

EN62262 calls for 5 impacts, and the aluminium minipuck with a polycarbonate lens can withstand over 30 impacts without physical or electrical damage to the minipuck.

Decorative LightingSmall and unobtrusive, yet powerful, makes the HLS minipuck the ideal lightsource to incorporate into street sculptures and illuminating artwork or to wash walls with white or RGB light.

Flat surfaces? The HLS minipuck is available in a flat faced option enabling installation into square sections or flat metallic surfaces.

Reliable driver solutions, using reputable proven control gear adds the lighting effects desired for stunning decorative illumination.

Harsh EnvironmentsInstallations located near corrosive sea air are prone to increased galvanic activity. The stainless steel version of the HLS minipuck is manufactured entirely from 316 grade steel

Architectural LightingThe HLS system lends itself to incorporation within metallic architectural features and structures other than handrail, making it possible for architects to illuminate designs elegantly without using additional light sources.

Specifying the HLS - Handrail Lighting System For new projects, where there is no existing handrail in place, the HLS falls into two sections of an architectural specification:

The handrail structure - quoted and installed by a handrail installer LED minipucks and drivers - quoted and installed by a qualified electrician

Alternatively, speak directly to Planet Lighting or one of our distributors for a complete quote consisting of handrail sections, minipucks, control and installation.

For all quotations, a fully dimensioned plan as well as elevation drawings of each individual railing are required, preferably indicating the location of the control gear, as this enables us to determine the optimum driver solutions and wire size for individual projects.

ElectricalThe HLS minipucks are wired in series and driven by constant current external or internal drivers.

There is no significant voltage drop and most importantly - no loss of light.

External drivers can drive up to 30 minipucks in series . Each handrail run accommodates up to 3 drivers over 200m making this is a very cost effective method suitable for most installations.

In-tube drivers are capable of driving up to 12 minipucks in series over distances up to 1.5 km The number of internal drivers that can be combined, depend on the size of the power supply. In-tube drivers present an effective solution to installations where there are restrictions on where power supplies can be housed.

Why do we offer two different driver methods? The HLS is the most powerful yet most flexible LED handrail lighting system available. By offering two ways of driving the minipucks we maximise the number of sites where LED handrail lighting can be installed, without compromising system efficacy.

Standard minipuckFits Ø38mm-100mm handrail

The standard minipuck is designed to screw into a M16 x 1 hole, with a 16mm rebate. The 2mm shoulder feature gives the puck a smooth and seamless finish when installed into a handrail. Suitable for wall thickness > 2.5mm.

Flat faced minipuckThe flat faced minipuck is suitable for square sections or flat metallic surfaces.

The flat faced minipuck is available as:

- a standard puck ( > 2.5mm) - a thin wall puck ( >1.5mm)

Thin wall minipuckFits Ø38mm-100mm handrail

The thin wall mini-puck screws into a M16 x 1 hole. It is threaded all the way to the top, allowing greater thermal conductivity and better purchase in thinner materials, making it suitable for tubes with a minimum of 1.5mm wall thickness.

HLS minipucksMeasuring 20mm high and a diameter of Ø15.9mm, the minipucks are the central components of the HLS. They are machined from aluminium or stainless steel, and engineered with integral reflectors designed to maximise light output.

The threaded bodies screw into metallic handrail or square sections, which act as the main heatsink of the LED ensuring maximum heat dissipation and low junction temperatures.

Flexible and versatile, the minipuck is available in a wide range of colour temperatures, RGB and single colours.

RGB minipuckThe RGB minipuck is available in all three body types. A range of control options and customised driver solutions available on special order.


The minipucks screw into drilled M16 x 1 holes, which are then rebated using a 16mm drill bit*, and finally tapped to cut the internal thread.

Holes can be drilled on site using Planet Lighting custom drill jig kits and or in a factory setting.

Planet Lighting staff can carry out complete on-site installations or be involved in a supervisory capacity. Ask for a quote!

Pull both wires through hole located furthest from driver

Connect red to red and black to black using UR2 connectors

Make sure connectors are firm-ly pushed in and crimp tightly

Gently push the connectors through the hole

Loosely screw the minipuck into the handrail

Pull the red wire through the next hole

Cut the red wire using wire cutters

Ensure the direction is correct

Connect the subsequent mini-pucks using UR2 connectors

Once all HLS minipucks have been wired up and gently pushed and loosely screwed in power up the LED driver

Once satisfied all is in working order apply Loctite to minipucks
