At 19, I picked up my first issue of Fast Company randomly at an airport. It was during College, and I was a bit uncertain about my

future. The issue featured IDEO and Design-Thinking. Hmm, human-centered and empathy-focused problem-solving, for anything? I

became obsessed. I wanted in. With that determination, and after having received my Bachelor’s degree, I headed to Parsons to

study Design Strategy + Management. I begged my professor for an internship opportunity at her design studio, Pentagram.

Realizing that getting a job in the area required more than a tenacious desire to do so, I began working retail at Urban Outfitters to

keep afloat. I quickly worked my way up the food chain and landed a role as a Web Production Coordinator at its headquarters in

Philly. There, I met Urban’s Lead UX Designer. He provided me a glimpse into UX. I couldn’t help but to see the parallels it held with

Design Thinking and Human-Centric Design. From there forward, I began analyzing the e-commerce experiences with which I worked

everyday, and how they may be enabling or inhibiting its customers.

I decided that I needed to revisit Design Thinking, and specifically, User Experience Design. Within a few months, I was enrolled

in General Assembly’s UX Immersive program. It was one of the best decisions of my life.

I came out feeling capable of solving for any UX objective handed to me. I now have an even stronger appreciation for empathetic

design. I now have an insatiable hunger to learn from others’ varying perspectives.

The decisions to move from one topic of interest in my life to another have always been a result of curiosity. I have always been

curious. User Experience Design is curiosity put to practice.

“what does this logo convey to you?”.

“User response” & document

I’m out to dinner with a friend and she’s explaining an idea for a startup. I quickly sketch a logo based on her explanation and bring it around to the restaurant staff:

Repeat steps as many times as possible, while

increasing research depth and raising deliverable

fidelity up until project deadline

Responsive Website Redesign for Non-Profit

GA Labs - Kids Browsing Extension Backbone - iOS Native Wearable App

Task

Create a safe and fun web-browsing experience for kids

Proposed Solution

A Google Chrome kid's web-browsing extension with built-in search that could be locked and unclocked via parental password.

Task

Redesign client website so it’s not disjointed

Proposed Solution

A hi-fi, responsive, web prototype that addresses the needs and desire of non-profit website users that can be brought to a development team

Task

Design a native app for a wearable that solves for a real problem

Proposed Solution

An app that helps to correct your sitting posture by providing guidelines leverage the body movement technology built into the JINS MEME glasses

This refers to collecting data that informs the production of a design but also to the insight gathered through testing those designs with users to facilitate iteration.

Learn

year up charity: water clean the world pencils of promise

Before meeting our client, we created a heuristics evaluation to expose the strengths and most glaring issues users may run into while using the site

Learn

For the same project, we conducted a content and layout audit to identify consistencies across our competitor’s websites and voids that present potential design opportunities

Heuristics Evaluation

Competitive Analysis

1

To create an app that addressed back pain, we interviewed chiropractors, acupuncturists, physical therapists and yoga instructors to gain their perspective into how an app may act as an adjunct treatment to their specialties

As part of gaining insight into what kids to do on the internet, I had them place 10 items of interest, of 20, on their own “internet island”.

This helped me understand the subjects they hold of highest importance

LearnContextual Inquiry

Interviews For the non-profit redesign, we tested the current site’s usability by asking users to perform some tasks while being asked some basic questions. We encouraged them to speak aloud while doing so.

“What do you make of this page?” “I don’t know,.. Soap? Something about Soap and Hygiene?” “What do you think you’re donating to?” “I’m not sure.. Community? But I’m not sure what the community is...”don’t know..

After learning the importance of content in redesigning our non-profits website, I asked users to lay out cards of content according to their preference—how they’d envision the site on the mobile device

To ensure that our app for body movement accurately depicted visuals for real-time moving parts, we brought our designs around for feedback and iterated on that research.

To begin developing I.A. for our non-profit redesign, our group conducted 14 card sorts wherein users sorted cards that they saw as relevant to one another under Taxnonomy

Building begins when I feel comfortably-informed about the components that comprise our minimum viable product—typically, the technology, the brand, the client, and who we’ve determined to be their users.

At any point in this stage, I strive to deliver something to users as fast as possible to receive feedback from which to iterate on.

For our site redesign, we pooled our interview takeaways into an affinity diagram to uncover similarities in the perspectives of multiple users. .

These were the four personas that best reflected the behaviors and tendencies of the PEOPLE we interviewed for the site redesign.

Persona Development

Our Primary Persona

1

We developed a parent and kid persona for our Kid’s Web Browser.

As a visual person, seeing an experience outside of a system and in an emotional way gives me a glimpse into potential opportunities to design past the obvious,

*It’s particularly useful for designing with lifestyle in mind.

After developing personas,

we created a user journey to

or hang-ups that might need

correction or simplification

to optimize the ease of use.

xThe wires for the site redesign really started on a napkin,

progressed to a design studio with my project partner and evolved

into higher fidelity versions adapted based on user feedback

BuildWireframing

Prototypes offer up the best opportunity to iterate based on user action and behavior. Ideally, a low-fi prototype would be delivered to users as soon as possible

These are hi-fi prototypes that reflect the requirements of various project sprints.

Sketching & IdeationMy UX Superpower

HOW YOU’D BENEFIT FROM IT • Sketching communicates ideas easily and just as effectively in a fraction of the time

• We’ll have paper prototypes out to users for testing before the competitors do

• Let’s minimize design debt and get the feedback early on before raising fidelity

• Let’s face it, wireframes can be conveyed just as easily on a napkin as they can in Axure

• The Whiteboard is where mind maps and brainstorming trigger novel ideas to be tested
