The Data Center’s Situation

Operational costs are soaring and more pollution is emitted

More cooling is needed

Servers are heating up

floor space is running out

More racks and more servers

Greater need for computing resources

AFCON Predictions (2006)

By 2010, more than half of all data centers will have to

relocate to new facilities or outsource some applications

Over the next five years power failures and limits on power

availability will halt data center operations at more than

90% of all companies

By 2010, nearly 70% of all data centers will utilize some

form of grid computing or other virtual processing

Within the next five years, 1/4 of all data centers will

experience a business disruption serious enough to affect

the entire company’s ability to continue business-as-usual

Metrics (by The Green Grid)

Power Usage Effectiveness (PUE):

PUE = Total Facility Power ÷ IT Equipment Power

and its reciprocal, the DCiE is defined as:

DCiE = 1÷ PUE = (IT Equipment Power ÷ Total Facility Power) x 100%

Average DC: PUE = 2.0-3.0

Best practice DC = 1.3-1.6

State of Art DC = 1.2

Denmark: 20% of total energy use is from wind turbines

Iceland: 50% of total energy use is from geothermal

sources

Israel: 3% of total energy use is from solar energy (water

heating)

Brazil: fuels 50% of its vehicles using bio-ethanol

Thermal Energy Storage

Extra-Pak Ice Coils are used in thermal energy storage for

buildings 30,000 square feet or larger, industrial process

cooling, and data centers

The design and layout of the elliptical, galvanized steel

coils increase the amount of ice that can be stored in a

given area

Low temperature cooling water (1°C/34°F) supplied to

an existing building loop can add 20% more cooling

capacity

Thermal Energy Storage -Projects

Matam –Haifa (55,000 m2): Design –IES, investment: 1$M,

estimated savings: 150,000$ year

Israel Building –Carmiel (20,000 m2): Design –Articom,

investment: 680,000 ₪, estimated savings: 39,000 ₪ a

year

Most common in office and public buildings

No activity in Israeli IT –few pilots so far.

Drawbacks:

• Lack of experienced support

• Not reliable enough

RoHS Directive and Eco-Label

The RoHS Directive stands for "the restriction of the use

of certain hazardous substances in electrical and

electronic equipment“

Eco-Label: a voluntary scheme designed to encourage

businesses to market products and services that are

kinder to the environment and for European consumers -

including public and private purchasers - to easily

identify them
