Question 7

£How much money does the

average film cost? There is no such thing as an average cost of a film. They vary greatly dependent on a variety of factors, such as:

• The production requirements (do they require hundreds of cast, elaborate sets and locations, technical props, special FX and stunts)

• Rights. Do they have the rights to the screenplay?• The previous success of the production company. Do they have a

reputation? • Do they have independent finance to contribute or do they have a

financial backer?• The amount of crew required• The length of production• The Distribution and exhibition costs

Financing the project: Government Grants

• Grants are provided by Government Schemes designed to encourage creativity and new talent.

• A film production can benefit a country in a number of ways:– Employment opportunities– Development of Culture– Advertising a location to an international

audience.

Crowd funding

• Another way a film can be funded is by the help of other people.

• It is simply people donating money to the project they believe they would be successful as well as want to see themselves, a little like investing into the project, however through crowd funding the money does not need to paid back.

• An example of a platform that provides crowd funding to take place is kick starter.

Distribution

• We have decided to come up with a marketing strategy and distribute the film ourselves rather than using an external source. Using the crowd funding money we would receive we would use some to distribute the money which ultimately works out as a cheaper option but has less desirable results, we may not get a lot of people aware of the film where as a large distribution company already has the recognition and money to help market the film on such a large scale. But as we want to keep control of the movie we produced we would rather distribute it our selves.

Mainstream audiences are audiences on a global scale, and so Hollywood conglomerates aim to distribute to these audiences to increase the profit that the film will take.

Independent film companies often don’t appeal to mainstream audiences as their films are lower budget, therefore making them less in terms of quality when compared to the high budget films as of the funding they are provided with however it does not necessarily mean the film would be rubbish if it doesn’t appeal to main stream audiences, it can be equally as good in terms of storyline, production, marketing etc.

These 2 companies may aid in helping us distribute the film as these 2 companies are well known for their horror movie successes. For example paranormal activity and the exorcist.

Looking at the success of those movies I believe they may also bring the same success to our movie.
