Pop art is an American and British movement that began in the post-World War II period. The movement emphasized the representation of things consumers encountered in their every day lives. Pop artists’ subjects were often objects like soup cans and famous celebrities. Their representations also tended toward simplicity, relying on pure primary colors.

POP ART Andy Warhol, perhaps the most famous pop artist,

produced some of the most iconic work of the movement. He painted Campbell’s Soup Cans, a series of 32 pieces each representing a normal, everyday Campbell’s soup can as consumers would encounter it in advertisements and at the supermarket.

Warhol would go on to create other iconic images using a silk-screening process that made it easy for them to be mass-produced. For example, he relied on silk-screening when making his iconic, primary-color portraits of Marilyn Monroe.
