Classification

• Common name: Toco Toucan• Scientific name: Ramphastas Toco• Color: Black body,white chest/chin area, yellow

or orange beak with black on the tip. • Size:

-wing size: 9-10 in.

-weight: about 1 Lb.

-Body length: about 2 ft.

Habitat

• Found In eastern and south Brazil, Guiana region, Paraguay, Bolivia, and Northern Argentina. (Only western hemisphere)

• They are a tree dwelling spices.• Live in small groups. • They live in rainforest, tropical area. • There are 37 different species of toucans. • Though they are found in tropical areas because they live in trees,

they are threatened by the destruction of its forest habitat.

Food sources

• With the long beak they have they eat fruit, seeds, insects, spiders, small lizards and snakes.

• They also steal eggs from nests of other close birds.

Breeding

• When the toucans are born they are born naked blind. They don’t develop there first layer of feathers until a month later.

• The parents take turns incubating the eggs in there home.

• They have about 2-4 eggs a year. • They toucans nest in decaying wood holes, they cannot

make their own home but they are able to make it bigger by taking off the soft wood surrounding the out and insides of the hole in the tree.

Fun Stuff!

• The oversized beak that the Toco toucan has is used for intimidating other smaller birds.

• Although the Tocos beak looks heavy it is actually hollow and very light.

• They have the largest beak of their species.
