The Essential Jesus as Revealed in the Gospel of Mark

MARK 16:9-20

Kevin DeYoung

“No one succeeds at the highest level in sports

without working out. No one makes it in music without lots of practice. No one

excels in scholarship without years of study. And no one makes it far in the school of holiness without hours and

days and years in the Word.” (Kevin DeYoung)

Textual criticism compares manuscripts or copies of

documents with one another in an attempt to

arrive at a reasonable sense of what the original document actually said.

“textual variants”

“The original documents of the New Testament have been lost, but their

contents have been faithfully preserved in thousands of

copies. Today we are certain of about 99 percent of the original wording. In no place is the deity of

Christ or his bodily resurrection called into question by textual variants. Although much of the

wording of the text has undergone change over the centuries, the core

truth-claims of Christianity have remained intact.” (Daniel Wallace)

“Some ancient manuscripts of Mark’s Gospel contain these verses and others do not, which presents a puzzle for scholars who specialize in the history of such manuscripts.”

“The external evidence strongly suggests these verses were not originally part of Mark’s Gospel … The internal evidence from this passage also weighs heavily against Mark’s authorship. Since, in spite of all these considerations of the likely unreliability of this section, it is possible to be wrong on the issue, thus, it is good to consider the meaning of this passage and leave it in the text.”

Mark 16:9-20

Mark 16:8And they went out and fled from the tomb, for trembling and astonishment had seized them, and they said nothing to anyone, for they were afraid.

Mark 16:9-20

"It is difficult to believe that Mark ended his Gospel with verse 8 unless he was interrupted. A leaf or column may have been torn off at the end of the papyrus roll."

Mark 16:9-20 (R. C. Sproul)

“It is believed that early in the second century, the Christian church wanted to give an appropriate conclusion to the abrupt ending of Mark, so this

section of 12 verses was added based on what the Apostles recalled and the

other gospel writers had said. The doctrines in this section are consistent with what is taught

elsewhere in the New Testament. Therefore we can read this

passage with confidence and profit.”

Appearances, Assignment and

The Analogy of the Faith

Allow Scripture to interpret Scripture.

Appearances, Assignment and

Ascension2 Corinthians 12:12The signs of a true apostle were performed among you with utmost patience, with signs and wonders and mighty works.

Appearances, Assignment and

AscensionHebrews 2:3-5How shall we escape if we neglect such a great salvation? It was declared at first by the Lord, and it was attested to us by those who heard, while God also bore witness by signs and wonders and various miracles and by gifts of the Holy Spirit distributed according to his will.

Appearances, Assignment and

AscensionMark 16:17-18And these signs will accompany those who believe: in my name they will cast out demons; they will speak in new tongues; they will pick up serpents with their hands; and if they drink any deadly poison, it will not hurt them; they will lay their hands on the sick, and they will recover.

Appearances, Assignment and

AscensionMark 16:19So then the Lord Jesus, after he had spoken to them, was taken up into heaven and sat down at the right hand of God.

Appearances, Assignment and

AscensionJohn 16:7-8 Nevertheless, I tell you the truth: it is to your advantage that I go away, for if I do not go away, the Helper will not come to you. But if I go, I will send him to you. And when he comes, he will convict the world concerning sin and righteousness and judgment.

Appearances, Assignment and

AscensionMark 16:20And they went out and preached everywhere, while the Lord worked with them and confirmed the message by accompanying signs.

TODAY’S TAKEAWAY
