What is social media?

• What does it mean to you?• What does social media mean

for businesses?• Businesses have to compete for

reach and to get in front of their target audience.

They aren’t on Facebook to follow businesses…they’re on there to see baby pictures, sunsets, catch up with old friends, take funny pictures of their pets, document the food they eat and generally anything and everything else but caring about your business.

EVERYTHING is branded

• To get your business mentioned on social media means you get traffic. Traffic = sales.

business trying to get noticed on FB.• The algorithm and structure is always

changing.• It’s becoming pay-to-play to reach your fans.• Retargeting and sponsored ads are only going

to keep increasing. :/

Guidelines for Businesses to Follow

• Be professional• Maintain a consistent tone• Vary the content• Don’t be too salesy (80/20 rule)• Provide value above and beyond everything

else!

• You’re restricted to 140 characters so it’s basically like a text message everyone can see.

• YouTube is the 2nd largest search engine in the world. Why?

Mistakes to Avoid

• DON’T troll• DON’T give bad customer service• DON’T have typos -- proofread (shorthand is fine)

• Think about what you’re sharing and why? Is there a purpose?
