TREX meeting 27th of November 2019

VELO vacuum system statusOn behalf of the VSC – Josef Sestak

Overview of the activities

Additional sectorisation of the IP8.X;

Activities motivated by VELO upgrade;

Activities motivated by SMOG 2;

Already presented, discussed and

approved:

o TREX #19;

o LHCb Technical Committee 12/2018;

o IWG (multiple times);

Additional sectorisation

• Existing sectorisation of IP8.X (RB84 – RB86);

11/27/2019 Document reference 3

Additional sectorisation

• Existing sectorisation of IP8.X (RB84 – RB86);

11/27/2019 Document reference 4

Additional sectorisation

• Prepare UX85 space reservation upstream of the VELO;

11/27/2019 Document reference 5

• Removal of the angle valve GV302;

• New sector valve as close to IP8 as possible;

• Aperture issue (valve ID63 – VELO ID80;

Additional sectorisation

• Aperture – we were lucky; VELO elliptical head has

been modified during the production (Nikhef – Thermo).

Additional sectorisation

11/27/2019 Document reference 7

• Old transition removed and geometry reconstructed

• New transition (VELO 54mm – Sector valve 63mm)

• Produced and available for installation in 2020

• New configuration increase the available space;

• Smooth aperture transition;

• VELO protection cover needs to be modified;

• Equipment available for installation in 2020.

Activities motivated by VELO upgrade

• Extension of the VELO differential pressure control unit;

• Modification of the GIS lines;

Additional

pressure-switch

Design and production of two new vacuum hubs

Production ongoing – will be ready by beginning of 2020

Spare pressure

switches to be

ordered

Modification of the GIS lines to make

space for CO2 cooling system

• To be scheduled (Q1 2020)

Activities motivated by SMOG 2

11/27/2019 Document reference 10

Design and production of custom flange for Storage cell connection

Production ongoing – will be ready by beginning of 2020

All-metal right angle UHV valve (DN10) – Storage cell injection

Equipment available for installation

Custom DN10 capillary – production by Q1 2020

Instrumented pumping group

Penning + Pirani gauge;

PV503 – SMOG injection;

Connection to Neon injection line;

Connection to SMOG injection line;

Current SMOG inlet

(will be used for connection after the LS2)

Activities motivated by SMOG 2

• Installation of the GFS line;

• Installation of the GFS table;

• Position on the balcony next to the current GIS;

• GIS table needs some small modifications (BVO);

• Bypass from the SMOG to GFS;

• Feasible during the YETS period.

Expected by 2020

Run 3

Additional activities

• Installation of the RGA with long-range cables;

• Inspection of the components related with

corrosion issue on the VELO vacuum system;

• Relocation of the calibrated Bayard-Alpert gauge

closer / on the VELO (ECR LHC-VGI-EC-0001).
