Renee BurkeYearbook AdviserBoone High School1000 E Kaley St.Orlando, FL 32806-4199

Dear Ms. Burke,

I know that the Boone Legend yearbook has won Gold Crown and Peacemaker before, and I would like to rejoin the publication staff as an Ads staffer. Under this position I can teach beginner staffers how to work InDesign and Photoshop and I would learn new things from the Section Editor of Ads that can help me and the book in the future to come. Please obtain the resume that is attached and let’s work together to help beginner staffers make the ads the best they can be.

Being an ad staffer, I have learned how to overcome difficulties that came my way, completed deadlines for 2013, and I would like to improve my skills. Being on the staff, I am able to understand time management and how to handle working with a partner on the same deadline as me. By this, I can help you make the best ads.

I enjoy creating spreads for pages because these come easy to me. I also, enjoy taking pictures and have had success in this area, taking pictures gives me joy and makes me proud. I’m able to make deadline and ask question if I don’t understand things. Being on the ads staff will not only help the book, but also help me fulfill my long term goals of pursuing a job that includes designing.

Thank you for taking your time and reading my attached resume and I look forward in having an interview with you to further explain why I am a reasonable person for the position under ads staff. I hope to hear from you soon.

Respectfully yours,

Sarah Combs

I got started in journalism because at the time I wanted to become just like my sister and help create an amazing yearbook and I found out that I like some of that elements of Journalism. This year I learned that time management is a big thing in making deadlines, that when you work with a partner on a deadline that you have to try to get ahead because problems can be thrown your way unexceptionally and you have to try to make the best out of that situation. I learned not to be shy when trying to sell things and that it is better to ask them even if they say no because they might buy in the end. Some journalism ethics I’ve learned is that you can not make things up if you don’t have proof that the thing is really said or really happened and that the focus of your story should be positive and not focusing on the negative aspect. This course was valuable because it showed me a lot of my faults that I have made and how I can improve them. I learned that at times I am not very good at managing time but I know that I can improve on this as long as I try to. I have learned many things from this class that I cannot explain in enough words and I thank you Mrs. Burke for being there and help me though this experience. Even though I was questioning wither I should do yearbook last year I am glad that I did. The skills that I have acquired this year will be much to my advantage because I can use this skills in the future by either getting a well paid job, helping me get through college by having better time management and learning how to work with a situation when it is unfavorable to you. I know that all the things that I have learned in this class, life skills, computer skills and even journalism skills I can use in the future to help me succeed beyond other people.

I think that this is my best work because I created some ads but also recreated business cards, when had no clue how to. This was a little difficult for me because

I recreate cards without trying to used scan in items and construct them from InDesign or Photoshop. From my first piece I scanned in the cards so they

were blurry and didn’t look clean at all. Going through the grading I learned that we recreate cards and learned new tools and shortcuts for InDesign,

like drop shadow. I learned how to get to items without quick keys like adding bullets. What I like about this piece is that everything is sharp,

crisp and clean making this page look professional.

In this story I learned how to write captions and that you need at least three different people for the interviews. The work evolved from the first effort to published piece was

a lot more then I accepted and if I had a chance to improve it I would of prepared myself, not push the story until the last minute, understand what the story was about, ask questions and understand the angle of the story I was going with. My feeling towards this piece is

disappointment because I know that I could of done better and put in more effort than I gave. I also feel disappointment because really didn’t get far in the grading for

this story. I feel like I’m putting an unfinished work out that could of been better.

I’m proud of this picture because it shows great emotion of the girl shooting the ball. I also am proud of the lighting because it is neither bright nor dark. I proud that I has photo composition, like

center of visual interest, depth of field and leading line. What attracts me

is that the water is at a standstill and the picture is still and

there isn’t any blurriness. In deadline 7 020-

I proud of this picture because it was the first time that I really toke picture that could be in the yearbook. This photo has composition of center of visual interest, depth of field and filling the frame. What attracts me to this picture is the emotion of the student trying to spell a word. This can be found in deadline 2 009-003_sophomre.jpg

I’m proud of this picture because it shows good lightning of the player and shows some emotion of the player. Some photo composition that are in photo is center of visual interest, depth of fields and a leading line. What attracts me the most is that the goal or

net is out of focus and the player is seen clearly. I like that picture it

self is seen clearly over all. In deadline 7 020-002_mock.

I was an asset to the staff because when I had either finished my

deadline ahead or was above shudule for the deadlie I would go do little things that

needed to be done. If I was in the waiting system I would do the same thing and do little things like go get a signature from someone and go do a little interview. Sometimes I would interview people that were in my period right before class stared or right before class ended. My commitment for this publication is very high. I will not slack off or just not care about it because I really like the yearbook that were made and I am commeted to make more in the future.

Some problems this year that I have had is not being informed on how to do something correctly and being told right before deadline I have to fix, I had some stress about making deadline on time, had something from stopping a good story from being published and making sure everything is perfect. From these situations I have learned that I can adjust to those changes fairly well. I would try to handle situation by not bottling up my feeling then one day let them explode, but try to stay calm and find ways to release those emotions. I would try not let my emotion effect my workability and not think that I’m way behind when I probably ahead or doing right on deadline. Also next time I can have back up plans when something isn’t going to work. Overall I felt like I have handled the situation well other than the fact that I let some emotion get the

better of me. I think that most the time when I got stress I shouldn’t have because I

was doing fine on my deadline.

My goals were to get everything done before deadline, do all my stuff and turn it into the editors on time and not to make simple mistakes. I succeed my first goal by finishing my other homework so that I can do yearbook ads and i didn’t push the deadlines to the last minutes. For my second goal I managed my time better than the past deadlines and used my free time to do ads then watch TV. On the third

goal I didn’t do so well on because i still made silly little mistakes by not taking my time to reread or re-look the

deadline to find the mistakes, but I have made an improvement by starting to command I texts

on my deadline.

DM4: News FeatureI would like this story to represent me because I think that the story is well written and straight to the point. There isn’t any fluff stuff there that makes it boring and gives you accurate information that the on-line reader would like and need.

Y15: Sport Action PhotoI would like for this picture to

represent me because in the photo you can see the player clearly without

any trouble. You can see that the player is showing emotions in the shot and the lighting isn’t too bright or too dim. Also the photo shows good action of the play as if you were right there at the game.

Y16: Sport Feature PhotoI would like this picture to represent

me because it show in depth of fields because the camera is focused on

the player and the goal post is blurry. This photo has good lightning because you can

see the girls face without it being to bright or dark.
