Shifting Frontiers is an exploration of ways in which one understands and reads their environment. My studies took me on a journey involving an in - depth analysis of the Shannon estuary, ( located on the west coast of Ireland ), with a particular interest in the profound sense of place that once existed among it’s estuarine communities. Today human settlement within the lowlands of the estuary is generally sparse as communities move further away from its peripheries. The rising chimneystacks and exhaust fumes of Shannon’s industrial compounds are now the only major signs of activity along the estuary’s coastline. The once unique intimate relationship with the intertidal zones that existed on the Shannon, has been lost as communities move further away from the estuary’s edge.

The design project looks into the future of industrial and settlement development along the estuary’s frontiers and challenges the idea of living on the unstable ground of the mudflats; a landscape that is constantly in flux. The brief is constructed around the facilities required for the group of engineers and researchers who will be involved in the designing of assistive tools and technologies for the deployment, monitoring and maintenance of ocean energy devices in the estuary. This new settlement and Research Camp will provide an anchor and identity for the small village of Loghill, located between the major industrial towns of Foynes and Tarbert on the south side of the estuary.

The design takes the form of a Public Causeway, a move that will initiate the extension of the town out onto the estuary’s mudflats providing a unique perspective of the surrounding scenery and the activities of the engineers. A system of timber piles raises the causeway above the mudflat zone allowing it to weave its way out to deeper waters, roofing and sheltering the laboratories and workshops of the Engineering Research Camp below. Access and use of the ‘laboratory islands’ will be tide dependent; encouraging the engineers to establish an intimate relationship with their setting. The brief will also challenge the disappearance of certain cultural tendencies of the estuary. The traditional boats of the Shannon region will find a new role in society, becoming the primary form of transport within this new community shuffling the engineers and visitors back and forth throughout the site.

A timer skin grows from the causeway to create the facade of the public amenity buildings. The entire structure extends vertically in order to embrace a unique mysterious appearance along the estuary edge. The community acts as a new ‘river mark’ for the boats and ships that navigate up the Shannon estuary.

The design project concentrates on an existing development of holiday homes and a derelict scuba diving center on the island of Inis Meain, located off the west coast of Co. Galway, Ireland. The existing buildings’ character and design results in their alienesque appearance amongst the landscape of Inis Meain and due to their un-use, they have fallen into disrepair. The project aims to establish a connection between the abandoned structures and the land they sit on. Such a connection will not only make them more habitable but will carve the way for an harmonious existence on the island.

The main goal was to regenerate the entire site as a scuba diving center, transforming three of the houses into sleeping quarters, the fourth as a communal dining and living area and the main building as the base, housing a reception, storage spaces, class rooms, changing rooms and offices.

The design process began with a thorough examination of the limestone landscape surrounding the housing development and a detailed analysis of historic structures on the island. The project led to the re-design of the ground plane of the site along with new structures which would anchor the buildings to the land and allow them to relate to the character of Inis Meain.

Whilst the exterior of the buildings were maintained, the interiors were re-designed to create four en suite bedrooms and a central communal fireplace in each house. A new porch was added to each front door, to provide protection from the harsh winds and a place to unload gear before entering the house. The design of the porch also provides storage space for the diving center. Located at the rear of each house is a sheltered west facing barbecue / outdoor fireplace, designed to provide seating spaces, and a viewing platform to access a height to view Connemara’s Twelve Pin mountains, located on the main land of Co. Galway. Further manipulation of the ground surface and levels and the introduction of new drystone and concrete walls blend the buildings further into their surrounding landscape.

SAUL YR4 - GALWAY DOCKS, IRELAND

QuaySide Completed - MAY 2011

This project follows on from a group master plan proposal for the port area of Galway city. Within the new masterplan blocks is the site for a Marine Institute, bridging a connection between the National Univeristy of Galway to the city’s docklands area.

The design for the institute is driven by a large urban move in which a new quayside is designed for Galway city along the mouth of Lough Atalia. (A narrow finger-like inlet in Galway Bay, adjacent to both the Railway Station and the Galway-Dublin Road)

The main function of this new quay edge is to connect the existing ‘Line Walk’, (a narrow path that runs along the train tracks from Renmore suburbs) to the Galway Docklands.

This connection begins as one approaches the city center from Renmore along the Line Walk. A new path vers off the main route and slopes down towards the water’s edge along the large embankment on which the train tracks and the walk sits. The path leads the pedestrian right under the existing railway bridge and arrives at a large 20-30m new quay side.

This new edge plays host to a large public space which houses the Marine Institute and the student accommodation along with public amenities such as restaurants, cafes, launderettes, exhibition spaces and galleries.

These public functions are located along a 7m wide strip along the quay edge. The student accommodation and common areas are located above. This strip acts as a crust in front of the Institute. A new street is created between the two, along which the main circulation of both buildings is located, creating an intense and exciting space, reflecting the atmosphere of many of the medieval streets of Galway city.This space connects to the quay through large openings in the accommodation block on the ground floor.

At the end of the street at the base of the railway embankment a ramp leads the pedestrian to the level of the tracks to obtain views of the passing trains, the new quay side, the docklands, Galway city and Lough Atalia.

Commissioned by Dublin practices PAC Studio and Bucholz McEvoy to assist with the research, preparation and grahic design for the entry of the research proposal PERFORMANCE into the European Commission Seventh Framework Programme for Research (FP7). FP7 supports projects and ideas that will boost Europe’s competitiveness and tackle issues such as improving human health, protecting the environment and finding new solutions to challenges arising, for example, from urbanisation and managing waste. www.ec.europa.eu//fp7

The research project PERFORMANCE is a collaboration between 11 different design practices, universities, and building management companies across Europe including the University of Limerick Ireland, Transsolar Energietechnik Germany, T/E/S/S Atelier d’Ingénierie France, VTT Finland, and Collaborativa Spain. The PERFORMANCE research proposal aims to develop communication tools for the design, operation and use of buildings to achieve sustainable levels of user comfort and energy performance. The core issue that PERFORMANCE seeks to address is the reconnection of building designers, operators, managers and occupants through the dynamic life cycle of the workplace in order to reduce energy usage whilst improving building comfort.

The PERFORMANCE research proposal will develop methodologies and tools to assess real building energy performance whilst improving the comfort level of buildings by leveraging user behaviour to improve building environmental quality. This will be achieved through ‘building trainers’ (using people, software tools and training programmes) to positively transform occupant behaviour, improve energy systems performance and through ‘building moderators’ (using people, new software tools, embedded sensor networks in building fabric) to support energy performance diagnostics for predictive maintenance, accurately calibrated to support decision making during the different stages in the life of the buildings.www.saul.ie/aiarg2013/saturday-speakers/Graham%20Petrie

SAUL Schools Inventory Pilot Research Project

Part of a team of recent graduates collaborating with MWP Consulting Engineers and BSM Strategic Planners. The team was commissioned by SAUL ( School of Architecture, University of Limerick ) on behalf of the Department of Education and Science to carry out a series of qualitative surveys of 18 Limerick city schools.

The pilot study was a research and data gathering analysis of primary and post primary schools within Limerick city and was carried out over an 8 week period. The analysis involved an infrastructure assessment and planning study of each school as well as analysis of their related facilities.

The work involved constant liaising with various department bodies including The Office of Public Works, The Heritage Council, The Department of Arts Heritage and the Gaeltacht, Limerick City Council and Limerick Smarter Travel as well as Community Groups, Religious Parishes, Parents Associations and various Architecture and Engineering Practices.

Detailed measured surveys were undertaken at each site. The use of each room in all buildings was documented along with an in - depth analysis of facilities available for students within and outside school grounds. Numerous visits and meetings with principals, teachers, parents and caretakers allowed us to build a clear picture of the operations of each school. Building quality and condition was documented along with student statistics, modes of transport, school facilities and community intergration

Completed my Part 1 Architectural Internship with Carmody Groarke Architects in London 2010. I was exposed to a wide variety of design projects ranging from large scale competition entries, exhibition designs, residential work, and temporary building structures.

My work at Carmody Groarke varied from modelmaking, Microstation drawings, preparing tender packages, architectural detailing, 3D modeling, assisting on site visits and photographing and documenting design work. I was given the responsibility of preparing client presentations on a weekly basis due to my profifent graphic skills using Illustrator, Indesign and Photoshop software.

I developed invaluable skills whilst working with Carmody Groarke and got an amazing insight into the operations of a competitive young and ambitious practice.

I completed my first half of my Part 1 Architectural Internship in 2009 at Donoughue Corbett Architects in Limerick, Ireland. Here I gained my first insight into the managing of an architectural practice. The majority of my work was concentrated on Model Making and Vectowork Drawings in preparation for competition entries and exhibition displays. I executed my skills to a very high standard and to a great level of detail. I also gained experience in the preparation of tender packages and presentation drawings and assisted during site visits and client meetings.
