HOW TO JOIN PtSA P12
Welcome to our latest edition of the PtSA
Newsletter in the new look format. This format is
designed to make the Newsletter look more
modern and easier to read. We hope that you will
enjoy the new format and find the contents
interesting and informative.
Since our last edition, we have launched PtSA in
the Eastern Cape (Port Elizabeth area) and in
KwaZulu-Natal (Prospecton area), and we have
also held Networking Evenings in the Western
Cape, Eastern Cape and Gauteng. We are
reporting on some of these Events in this
Newsletter.
A number of companies have joined PtSA in the
recent months and we have dedicated a section to
welcome the new members in this, and future
Newsletters. We hope that our readers will find this
section informative and we encourage more of our
readers to join the Association. In this regard we
have included a section in the Newsletter which
highlights what is offered by PtSA for your
information.
As part of our Networking and Matchmaking
process, we are inviting all of our members to
participate in all of the Networking Evenings,
regardless of which region the Networking
Evenings are taking place. This has resulted in
members from Gauteng and the Western Cape
attending the Networking Evenings in other
regions, which is resulting in the Networking
process being expanded. We encourage all of our
members to consider these opportunities to
network and matchmake across all regions.
As part of our process to partner with various
organisations and associations, we have partnered
with the South African Furniture Initiative (SAFI)
who gave presentations at the Western Cape and
Gauteng Networking Evenings. These
presentations highlighted opportunities for the
production technologies industry to supply
manufacturing systems, tooling and components to
the furniture manufacturing industry. We are
including an overview of these opportunities in this
Newsletter and we hope that some of our members
will participate in these opportunities.
We are also reporting on the Future Production
Technologies Convention taking place on the 24th
and 25th April 2019 in Cape Town which will be
hosted by PtSA. This Convention will be focusing
on the Fourth Industrial Revolution (4IR) and how
this will impact on the production technologies
industry on an international basis, and particularly in
South Africa. We encourage you to diarise this
event.
Our recent Networking Evening held in Port
Elizabeth was sponsored by RGC Engineering, and
our upcoming Networking Evenings to be held in
Gauteng and the Western Cape will be sponsored
by Retecon and RGC Engineering respectively. We
thank the teams at RGC Engineering and Retecon
for their support. Below please find the logo’s of our
sponsors for the Networking and Launch Evenings
for 2018. We thank all these sponsors for their
support.
We would like to take this opportunity to wish
everybody a blessed festive season and thank you
for your support over the past year.

Future Production Technologies Convention
The Future Production Technologies Convention to be held on 24/25
April 2019 will be hosted by PtSA in association with INTSIMBI and NTIP,
and will focus on the Fourth Industrial Revolution (Industry 4.0) which
will transform entire systems of production, management and governance.
To quote Mr. Roberto Azevedo, Director General of the World Trade
Organisation: “The story of economic progress is a story of economic
change. It is a story in which whole industries can rise and fall, replaced by
new ideas and innovations, which demand new skills. This relentless
process of transformation has built the global economy of today. … Now, as
before, individuals, firms and societies are striving to respond to rapidly
evolving economic conditions in order to share in the benefits. The
difference today is the remarkable speed at which these changes are
occurring.”
In view of the speed at which economic conditions are changing, the
convention will assist local companies to plan their strategies of how to
adapt to the impacts of the Fourth Industrial Revolution, with international
and local experts sharing their knowledge with the delegates attending
the convention.
Some of the topics to be covered include:
• Sustainable Development
• Impact of additive manufacturing on the manufacturing industry
• Nano Technology
• The internet of things
• New generation vehicles
• Expodential manufacturing
The convention will be held in the Cape Town International Convention
Centre (CTICC) with a number of exhibition stands to showcase a
number of local technologies.

It is with great sadness that we recently learned of the untimely death of Professor Dimiter (Dimitri) Dimitrov.
Prof Dimitrov was actively involved in the tooling industry, assisting many companies through his work at the
Stellenbosch Technology Centre, and he also served on the Board of Directors of the Western Cape Tooling
Initiative.
He is survived by his sons Marin and Kalin and their families, and by his sister Tzveta.
We wish to extend our deepest sympathies to his family for their loss.
Professor Dimitrov
Some key points taken from the Indabas:-
• 70% of exports of manufactured goods from South Africa are to
Africa
• South Africa has to adopt an approach of “South Africa Inc”
• Use the supportive infrastructures when entering the African market
• World class manufacturing takes place on the Shopfloor
• “Lean Manufacturing” is a philosophy and 4IR is a means of
achieving this philosophy
• To manufacture goods is easy but to sell goods is difficult
• Use 4IR to solve problems such as eliminating waste
• Disruption is temporary but excellence is permanent

APDP Tooling benefits available to Suppliers to the Motor Industry
Automotive Production Development Programme (APDP) incentives are
available to the manufacturers of Automotive Tooling and tooling systems,
that can generate 6 – 10% of the final invoice value as a cash incentive (final
value depends on value add of the project).
Final manufacturers of Automotive Tooling can qualify for APDP benefits in
the form of Production Rebate Credit Certificates (PRCCs), which can be
traded on the open market and sold to generate positive cash inflow.
Tooling is exempt from the minimum sales requirement applicable to
components, and thus even relatively small projects can apply for benefits.
The tool does NOT have to be exported to qualify, nor does it have to be
sold directly to an OEM. If the tool manufactures a component that ends up
on a motor vehicle on the OEM production line at some point (local or
international), then a claim can be processed.
To successfully process a claim, it is of critical importance that an application
for an EPC (Eligible Production Certificate) is lodged with ITAC
BEFORE any invoices are raised to the third party purchasing the tool. The
date of lodging becomes the effective date of validity of the EPC, so it is
important to get the sequence of events right with regards to this timeline.
All is not lost if an application is submitted after part invoicing on a project;
only that part already invoiced will be excluded from any benefits.
Projects that would qualify for an incentive are defined as follows:
"Automotive tooling" means –
1. dies for drawing or extruding metal, of subheading 8207.20;
2. tools for pressing, stamping or punching, of subheading 8207.30;
3. work holders of subheading 8466.20;
4. assembly jigs and assembly lines, of subheading 8479.89; and
5. injection moulds, moulding patterns and moulds of heading 84.80,
where the principle use is for the manufacture of specified motor
vehicles, heavy vehicles as defined in note 1 to rebate item 317.07
and automotive components for such motor vehicles;
Should you have tooling projects that qualify for this benefit, please
contact DG Capital for more information, or to assist you with the
registration and processing of your claim.

RGC Engineering recently installed a GOM 8-Axis Kinematic optical measuring system as well as a 6-Axis system, for measuring
complete car bodies, which has reduced the measuring time by 80% compared to conventional methods and has increased measuring
accuracy.
The new system, known as the ATOS ScanBox Series 6, 7 or 8, is an optical 3D measuring machine for automated dimensional
inspection, suitable for different applications and part sizes.
This new system is an illustration of the 4th Industrial Revolution being implemented in practice, with the following results:-
• Accurate and traceable measuring results.
• High measuring speed and throughput
• Flexible solutions with regard to the companies being measured
• The system is suitable for the production environment
• Auto teaching for minimized programming efforts
• Eliminating the influence of human error through automation
• Reliable information for statistical process control
This results in increased efficiency and reduced production costs.
