Indian Railway

History of Indian RailwayFirst Indian Railway line was

opened on 16th April 1853.

The first train consisting of one steam engine and four coaches , traversed a stretch of 21-miles between Mumbai(Bombay) and Thane. Operated by private company -Englishmen.

Indian Railway has a glorious past of more than150 years serving the nation.

Features of Indian RailwayIndian Railway has a 3 tier management system.In 1951 the system were nationalized as one unit.Railway has 9213 locomotive 59,713 coaches & 2.5 lack of wagon.It is one of the world largest railway networks comprising 115,000km of track over a route of 65,000km.No strike in last 30 years in spite of 19 lakhs workers.

17 zones in Indian railway.IR Headquater – New Delhi.It is largest railway system in Asia and 2nd largest railway system in world under one management system.

It carries 1.4 crore passengers and 16 lakh tonnes of goods every day. More than any rail system on earth.

It runs 12000 trains everydayIt is biggest civilian employer in the world.As of 31 march 2012 . 22,224km (34%) of the total 65,000 km route length was electrified.India first electric train “DECCAN QUEEN” started on 1920 between Mumbai to Pune.Himsagar express – it is largest distance travel in India between Jammutavi to Kannyakumari (3,726km).

It is fuel efficient system.7500 stations & about 500 computerized passenger reservation system.It is a lifeline of country.

ORGANISATION:- Top- railway board or ministry of

railway headed by chairman railway board.

Middle- 17 zones headed by General Manager.

Bottom- 68 division headed by Division Railway Manager.

Speed of TrainsShatabdi max 140kmph.

Rajdhani max 130kmph.

Others max 110kmph.

All shatabdi train starts with no 20 & last two digit vary from 01 to 84.

Railway Track or Permanent Way

Combination of rails, fitted on sleepers and resting on ballast and subgrade is called the railway track or permanent way.

Technical details track and gauge

Indian railway uses 4 gauges:-

Broad gauge- 1,676mm. It is standard gauge.it is used in 91% of total track.

Meter gauge- 1,000mm. Used in 8000km route.

Narrow gauges- 762mm. Used in 2000km only.
