Our Lord Jesus Christ, King Of The Universe Feeble, Fleeting Human Glory

Lorenzo Sabbatini painted an amazing Christ the King ascended in heavenly glory. Have you heard of the artist? He and his art were sought after by the wealthiest, most powerful people of his day—so famous then, but unknown today. Thus is the feeble nature of human glory. In today’s Gospel, Jesus is in chains at the mercy of Pontius Pilate. The Roman procurator failed to recognize him. Thus is the feeble nature of human recognition. Pilate had before him the King of Kings, the author of all authority in heaven and on earth, his maker and judge. It appeared that Pilate was the powerful one, but Jesus knew all power really came from his Father. Thus the feeble nature of vision without faith. The scene painted by Sabbatini is what we should always keep in mind—Jesus taken up into the clouds as he blesses us. Cherubs dance and celebrate the return of the King, their fearless leader, who faced all the forces of hell and emerged victorious. He was taking his rightful throne and they are rejoicing at having him back. He still reigns from there today. He has opened the gates of heaven so all his beloved can now enter and populate the mansions prepared for them from the dawn of time. We may often feel like victims of circumstances or totally limited by our failures, health, or enemies. Yet, we are more than conquerors if we allow ourselves to be set free by the truth of Christ’s kingship. —Fr. Mark Haydu, LC

Reading I - Daniel 7:13-14

In the vision today, the Ancient One is an image of the eternal God the Creator, King, and Lawgiver. Thus, all authority will reside in him from the theological perspective of the Christian Gospel message. For Christians, this vision is an Old Testament image of the unity of God the Father and God the Son.

Reading II - Revelation 1:5-8

The greeting of grace and peace informs Christians that their peace is not found in the language of the Empire but rather in the Pax Dei or the peace of God. In faith and worship, the worshippers share Christ’s victory which is the harbinger of authentic peace.

Reading III - John 18:33b-37

Jesus tells us that the only truly effective and lasting power in this world is that of unselfish love. This love of Jesus will conquer the hearts of millions while the power of Pilate and the great Roman Empire will crumble to dust.

The Feast of Christ the King was established by Pope Pius XI in 1925 as an antidote to secularism, a way of life which leaves God out of man's thinking and living and organizes his life as if God did not exist. The feast is in-tended to proclaim in a striking and effective manner Christ's royalty over individuals, families, society, gov-ernments, and nations.

The liturgy is an album in which every epoch of Church history immortalizes itself. Therein, accordingly, can be found the various pictures of Christ beloved during suc-ceeding centuries. In its pages we see pictures of Jesus suffering and in agony; we see pictures of His Sacred Heart; yet these pictures are not proper to the nature of the liturgy as such; they resemble baroque altars in a gothic church. Classic liturgy knows but one Christ: the King, radiant, majestic, and divine.

With an ever-growing desire, all Advent awaits the "coming King"; in the chants of the breviary we find re-peated again and again the two expressions "King" and "is coming." On Christmas the Church would greet, not the Child of Bethlehem, but the Rex Pacificus — "the King of peace gloriously reigning." Within a fortnight, there follows a feast which belongs to the greatest of the feasts of the Church year -- the Epiphany. As in an-cient times oriental monarchs visited their principalities (theophany), so the divine King appears in His city, the Church; from its sacred precincts He casts His glance over all the world....On the final feast of the Christmas cycle, the Presentation in the Temple, holy Church meets her royal Bridegroom with virginal love: "Adorn your bridal chamber, O Sion, and receive Christ your King!" The burden of the Christmas cycle may be summed up in these words: Christ the King establishes His Kingdom of light upon earth!

The Diocese of Chalan Kanoa (Saipan, Tinian) suffered much devastation a couple of weeks ago

due to Category 5 typhoon (hurricane) Yutu. Saipan is the largest island of the Northern Mariana

Islands, a commonwealth of the United Sates in the wester Pacific Ocean. Bishop Ryan Jimenez has

requested help to rebuild a church that was destroyed, part of the Chancery Office, and to

provide aid to many who have lost their homes.

Our parish will take up a Second Collection on December 1 to assist the Diocese and those who need water, food and the basic necessities of life.

John 18:37 Pilate said to him, "So you are the king?" Jesus answered , "You say that I am a king. For this I was born and for this I have come into the world, to bear witness to the truth. Everyone who is of the truth hears my voice." Many people have many different titles, but what do we really do that defines us? What does it mean to bear witness to the truth? The pope has warned us greatly against gossip. As he said, "Where there is a lie, there is no love, love can't be ex-ercised. And when we speak of communication between persons we mean not only words but also gestures, atti-tudes, even silences, and absences. A person speaks with all that he is and does. We are all in communication always. We all live communicating and we are continually poised be-tween the truth and lies." So who do you make time for, and whom do you avoid? What do you make time for, and what do you avoid? This is why we have St. Don's, so all the young adults can reach out to each other and the community, to serve Christ the King. • Tuesdays ESL (English as a Second Language): Practice English conversation Tuesdays 5-6 pm * Thursdays Bible Study: Young adults Bible study at Church Thursdays 5-6 pm. * Second Saturday Church Cleaning: Once a month, just for a few hours, we help clean the church from 8.30 AM.

WHAT IF I AM ALREADY A BAPTIZED CHRISTIAN?

If you are a Baptized Christian, if your denomination uses water to baptize and the Trinitarian formula (“I baptize you in the name of the Father, the Son and the Holy Spirit”) then you would join the RCIA journey to find out more about the Catholic faith and you will be received in to full communion with the Catholic Church, receive the Sacrament of Confirmation and First Holy Communion (at our parish during Easter Vigil) What is coming into full communion with the Catholic Church? Coming into full communion with the Catholic Church describes the process for entrance into the Catholic Church for already baptized Christians. In most cases, these individuals make a profession of faith but are not baptized again. To prepare for this reception, the people, who are called Candidates, usually participate in a formation program to help them understand and experience the teachings and practices of the Catholic Church. Although some preparation may be with Catechumens preparing for baptism, the preparation for Candidates is different since they have already been baptized and committed to Jesus Christ, and many have also been active members of other Christian communities. The Candidates may be received into the Catholic Church at the Easter Vigil or at another Sunday during the year depending on pastoral circumstances and readiness of the Candidate. Father Roy, our dear Josephite friend who worked with us at Easton and who has been these past two years in a hospital in Montreal, learning what it is to be loved, used to tell a sto-ry of a leper he met at a hospital up on the Gaspe Peninsula. The leper complained to him, how could he believe in the love of God?

Father Roy proceeded to tell his favorite story. First of all there is dirt, the humus from which all things spring, and the flower says to the dirt, “How would you like to grow and wave in the breeze and praise God?” And the dirt says, “Yes,” and that necessitates its losing its owns self as dirt and be-coming something else. Then the chicken comes along and says to the flower, “how would you like to be a chicken and walk around as I do, and praise God?” And the flower assures the chicken that it would like it indeed. But then it has to cease to be a flower: And the man comes to the chicken and says to it, “How would you like to be a man and praise God?” And of course the chicken would like this too, but it has to undergo a painful death to be assimilated to the man, in or-der to praise God.

When Father Roy told this story he said with awe, “And the leper looked at me, and alight dawned in his eyes, and he clasped my hands and gasped, “Father!” And then we both cried together.”
