Today's Opponents East Premier League
TAYPORT v WHITBURN
A warm welcome to Whitburn supporters, players and committee for this afternoon ' s league match, their first at Canniepairt since their return to the Premier League .
Whitburn Juniors play at Central Park, Whitburn and were formed in 1933. Known to their support as "Burnie ", they won the Scottish Junior Cup in 1999/2000 beating Johnstone Burgh 4--3 on pens. following a 2- 2 draw after 90 mins . They were also finalists in 1965/66, losing to Bonnyrigg Rose 1-6 in a replay after a 1- 1 draw and in the 1994/95 final they lost 2-0 to Camelon.
Whitburn have also won the old East Division 'A' , seven times between 1986 and 2001, the East of Scotland Cup six times, the Fife and Lothian Cup four times, the League Cup four times and have also won numerous local cups over the years .
TODAY'S GAME
Whitburn have joint managers, Tom Hendrie and Russell Hogarth. Hendrie has a wealth of experience through managing Berwick Rangers, Alloa Athletic (twice) and St Mirren before taking over as Whitburn Manager in 2014. He was joined in 2015 by Russell Hogarth as player/joint manager. Russell previously played for a number of clubs including Craigroyston and Edinburgh City.
Whitburn got off to a good start this season, beating Violet 5-1 on the opening day, but unfortunately lost the following two games to Armadale, 3-2, and Forfar West End 2-1. They picked up a point on Wednesday, however, drawing 1-1 with Bathgate Thistle
Tayport will have to keep a watchful eye on strikers Gary Brass who knocked up an impressive 21 goals last season and Callum Robertson who has already scored 4 goals this season.
Tayport manager John Ovenstone is enjoying his first full season in charge and has been busy rebuilding the team by signing eleven new players. Over the forthcoming weeks their profiles will be featured in the programme.
John would have been happy to collect the points from the win over Violet on Wednesday past and will be looking for a similar outcome v Whitburn today to see his side move up to mount a challenge at the top of the table.
Manager's Memo·
Hi and welcome to today's game against Whitburn
Today sees the end of a busy start to the season with the mid week games finished. Although we haven't started the season great by our own standards, we're building now and though the performance was short of what we expect, getting the first win on Wednesday night against Violet was very important, We're a new team however and we need time to gel and the players need to take on board what we want them to do . Performances have been inconsistent, to say the least, but it's important we kick on from Wednesday night's victory . It won't be easy against a Whitburn side who have made a similar start to ourselves, but we need nothing less than the 3 points to keep on the coat tails of the early leaders.
We have been a bit short of late in the player department with Connaire and Tully being on holiday and Jamie Mackie and Scott McDowell picking up niggling injures which have hampered our start, as all are very important players in the squad. The squad is shaping up but we're still short of an experienced centre back/ right back, goalkeeper and maybe another attacking option. Rest assured, we're working hard to get these players on board.
We are back on home soil today and if we want to make a mark in this league, our home form has to be spot on. Today's game will be difficult and we need to see the performances that we saw pre-season brought forward into the league campaign. As we start to get the players back, we will be in a much stronger position with more competition for places . Hopefully, we can build and be back up mixing it with the top teams before long. I hope it's an entertaining game for both set of spectators today and that you enjoy your time at the Canniepairt

The 2016/17 season has hardly started and we have already had the first casualty with Falkirk Juniors unable to field teams for their opening two games, and have subsequently folded. Sad news indeed, but this will have a knock on effect for the league which now runs with fifteen teams and leaves Tayport bereft of a game on September 17th.
East Region have three new clubs this season. Returning after a year's abeyance are Luncarty and Crossgates Primrose. Craigroyston, who are based in Edinburgh, have switched from East of Scotland League.
Montrose Roselea have left the East Region to join the North Region Juniors' Divisionl West. Whitehills have also joined the same league after a year out.
Bridge of Don Thistle have changed their name to Newburgh Thistle. [bound to be confusing when the Scottish Cup comes round, especially if Newburgh are drawn against Newburgh !]
This season has also seen a couple of mergers with Grantown United and Spey Valley joining forces to become Spey Valley United . Stoneywood Parkvale is the newly named club for the merger between Stoneywood and Parkvale .

Tayport kicked off their Premier League campaign at home v big-spending Tranent. The visitors had the edge after the half time break and Gavin Sorley made a few notable stops
before Daniel Watt netted an excellent lob. As the game reached the 90th minute, Tayport
pressed forward and Scott McDowell was fouled inside the box, allowing Marc Ogg to smash home the resultant penalty. Ogg then blotted his copybook by receiving his march
ing orders in injury-time, but a point was sealed.
Next up was a midweeker in Forfar, against West End. Marc Ogg thumped Tayport ahead with another penalty, but what followed was most disappointing . A goal in each half from
striker Matt Ramsay put the hosts 2-1 up, and there were still another couple of twists to
come. 'Port equalised in the 70th minute, when Grant Mowatt drilled the ball across goal
and it was turned into his own net by full-back Ali Smith. The game, however , got away
from Tayport late on. A mistake at the back presented West End with an opportunity to re -take the lead and they made the most ofit, to make it 3-2 in their favour. With time ebb
ing away, Marc Ogg collected his second dismissal in two matches and the points were
lost.
Needless to say, the Canniepairt men were looking to make amends at Armadale, last Sat
urday, but did not do quite enough to secure victory. On 79 minutes , substitute Dale Reid
latched onto a terrific Conway pass and broke through the home defence to shoot clinical
ly past the 'keeper and put Tayport into a thoroughly deserved lead. 'Port would regret
numerous missed opportunities though, as, in the 84th minute, Gavin Sorley came off his
line and Armadale's King lobbed the ball over him and into the net for the leveller.
In the midweek game against Violet, Tayport finally posted their first victory of the cam
paign in a comeback win. Again John Ovenstone's men missed chances and it was the
Pansies who opened the scoring, courtesy of a scrambled effort on the half hour.
It was not until the hour mark that Tayport got themselves level. David Geekie set up Dale
Reid and he touched the ball around the 'keeper before finishing well. Minutes later, a
contentious penalty award for hand-ball gave 'Port the chance to take the lead and Jamie
Mackie duly obliged. In the closing stages Gavin Sorley made a top save to ensure his
side would take the points.

14 Y£ARSA60 Fourteen years ago in August 2002 a major restructure of the Junior game, which introduced the Super Leagues, saw Tayport take their place in the top echelon of Junior Football, the East Super League. It was to be an eventful campaign for the Fifers who would go on to lift not only the inaugural Super League Trophy but also the Scottish Junior Cup, 1-0 in the final v Linlithgow Rose at Firhill Stadium.
Today 's opponents , Whitburn, by contrast were kicking off in the Lothians Division One, a season which would see the West Lothian club finish runners up to champions Bo'ness United, missing out on the title by goal difference but nevertheless taking their place in the following season ' s Super League.
14 years ago in season 2002 - 2003, Tayport ably demonstrated their claim to be the top side in the Junior game. Losing only three games in a 47 game season. Two of the defeats were in the league. Both at home 0-1 v Oakley and 0-2 v Glenrothes. 'Port's magnificent league form saw them concede only 9 goals in the entire league programme and saw keeper Frazer Fitzpatrick record 14 clean sheets in 22 games.
First ever league fixture versus a team from the Lothians.
Tayport's first ever league game against a side from the Lothians was on September 14th 2002 when Arniston Rangers arrived at the Canniepairt . The Gorebridge side would finish fourth top of the Super League that season but a 3-0 win for Tayport saw the visitors head back over the Forth Bridge pointless. In fact it was to be one of Arniston's only two league defeats on the road that season.
Tayport's line-up that day contained seven Junior internationalists, many of whom could truly be described as club legends. The team was:-
Ross Gunnion
Steven Stewart
Frazer Fitzpatrick
John Ward
Allan Ramsay
Roberto Morris
Scott Peters
Subs. were Gareth Dailly , Jonathan Mitchell and Doug Scott.
Goals - Peters, Craik, McNaughton
Grant Paterson
