Ms Boyle was said to be unimpressed with the sing­

ing but was happy for a pie.

Joe Got The Call

When Haddington Athletic manager Davie McGlynn , the former Linlithgow boss , made the surprise decision to walk awa y from the Millfield managerial hot seat on 19th July just 82 days after being appoint ­ed and two weeks before the start of the season , the Haddington committee didn't panic but turned to the experienced Joe Hamill (right) as his replacement. Hamill (33) had been brought to Haddington earlier in the year by McGlynn , his former boss at Linlithgow.

The new boss certainly isn't short of experience in the professional game, having previously played at Hearts, Leicester City , Livingston , Queen of the South, Raith Rovers and Airdrie . He admitted that alt­hough management was something he 'd been looking to get involved in for a while, this opportunity had come about very quickly .

Joe will be pleased with the start the pla yers have made under his management and will be looking to continue in that vein this after ­noon .

68 years ago - 1949 For a few years after the Second World War there were two football clubs in the town, the present club and Tayport Violet. Violet struggled that season and one of their worst defeats was at RAF Leuchars who won 8-4, a match reported in the press as

l-euchars defeated 1ayport; Violet by 8 9oals t;o L/-on the Station pitch last; Saturday· ft; was a scrappy and not; particularly interestin9 9ame with l-euchars always very much on top· ,hanks t;o Dooley, the RflF held a comfortable lead of 3 to 7 at half-time and the fact; that Violet; mana9ed to score at all was due more to the miscalculation of the airmen than the skill of the 1ayport; players·* flpart; from Dooley who scored six, the only other 9oal-9etter was Banks who scored twice·

Th e RAF could of course call on players doing their National Service of which six goal Dooley was one. Within a year Dooley was with Sheffield Wednesday and in 1952 was the top marksman in England, netting 46 goals in 30 games for Wednesda y including 4 in one game v Everton. Doole y's career would end in tragedy the following season however when, after breaking a leg following a clash with the Preston North End goalie, gangrene set in and he had to have the leg amputated 6" from the top. Although his playing career was over he later went on to mana ge Wednesday and later became chairman at neighbouring Sheffield United. A legend in Sheffield, ther e is a statue in Dooley's honour outside Bramhall Lane.

125 years ago - 1892 .Rosebank FC (Monifieth) travelled to Tayport to meet Tayport Union FC on 9th September 1892 but owing to a cricket match, the game had to be called off. Surely one of the more unusual reasons for a match to be called off, but that was football 125 years ago.

For the record, the cricket match in question was Tayport United v Tailors United. The Tailors scored 58 all out but Tayport could only muster 27 in reply. The scorecard showed Pearson 4; Pearson O; Kiddie O; Coss l; Matthew 5; Innes 5; Gordon O; Welsh 2; Death 3; Low n.o. O; Coss O; Extras 7
