MArch at the Welsh School of Architecture is unique. The first year is conducted as education in practice, with work-based learning supported by teaching and short courses. The second year is spent in residence at the school, focussing on a final design thesis. An introductory urban design project – this year conducted in Dublin or Shanghai – precedes a ‘primer’ project in which graduates stake their architectural position. Thesis projects set out to investigate the questions asked by the ‘primer’, and graduates choose their own sites and programmes as vehicles to explore their ideas. Work is undertaken through thematic studios, each led by one member of staff (this catalogue is organised around the studio themes): Building Simply, Digital Tectonics, Materials, Memory, Place and Genius Loci, Senses and Composition, Territory, the Workshop. Thesis projects seek to integrate all aspects of design into a coherent architectural position, dealing with thinking which is at once cultural, social, formal, political, technological, sustainable, contextual, builderly, environmental, historical, philosophical and economic. We expect that design propositions are speculative and realisable in the contexts of inhabitation, site, climate, culture and feasible technologies. We believe that such pragmatism is not boring inhibition; architects must be able to deliver their speculations. And from necessity comes richness.

The Welsh School of Architecture has a reputation of being one of the best schools in the UK. Its holistic approach to design embraces all aspects of architecture. The learning experience is focused around a strong studio culture and the studio project, based on the traditional one-to-one approach to design teaching. Academic staff are supported by visiting professors and tutors from local and leading UK practices.
