(StatePoint) If you’re watching your pocketbook these days, as many people are, you may be searching for affordable ways to celebrate Mom this Mother’s Day, May 13.
The good news is thoughtfulness doesn’t need to cost a fortune.
You can show you really care by taking the time to personalize your Mother’s Day activities and gifts. Here are some unique ideas that meet a wide range of budgets:
Food
You’ve probably been treated to many special home-cooked meals by Mom. Now it’s time to recipro-cate. Instead of taking mom out on Mother’s Day, where many restau-rants jack up their prices by offering a prix-fixe menu, prepare a special
Mother’s Day Ideas For The Budget-Conscious
meal yourself. Remember, the day is about your mom, so plan the menu around all her favorite dishes. Offer to cook for her at her house so she doesn’t need to lift a finger.
Gifts
Don’t just opt for a trite box of choc-olates or generic gift you find in the first store you visit. These days, you can find personalized gifts that truly match Mom’s unique personality.
“You can surprise and delight some-one most with a personalized gift, since there is nothing more unique,” says Mariam Naficy, CEO of Mint-ed.com, an online stationery store.
Personalized stationery sets make great affordable gifts for mom. Re-member, the stationery a woman uses speaks volumes about her. Find something just right by browsing the selection of colors and styles on an online stationery store. For example, Minted.com carries a wide selection of unique customizable designs.
You might also consider giving the gift of self-expression with a per-sonalized journal. Make the journal truly hers before she ever sets pen to paper by including meaningful pho-tos and inscriptions on its cover and interior.
Flowers
For a traditional flair, think flowers
this Mother’s Day. But rather than coughing up a pretty penny buying a standard issue store-bought arrange-ment, take your mother on a nature walk to pick wildflowers. Not only will you get to spend a great spring day together outside, you can cre-
ate a unique bouquet at home using flowers she picked herself.
When showing Mom you care this Mother’s Day, don’t let your budget hold you back. Thoughtfulness and thriftiness can go hand in hand to make the day extra special.

Holy Spirit, you who solve all problems, light all roads so that I can attain my goal, you who gave me the divine gift to forgive and forget all evil against me and that in all instances in my life you are with me. I want in this short prayer to thank you for all things as you confirm once again that I never want to be separated from you in eternal glory. Thank you for your mercy towards me and mine. You will guide visitors on a tour through the Shaker Historic Site to see buildings, the landscape, and the Shaker cemetery. Prior guide experience is helpful but not necessary. Training and orientation is provided to new guides. Tours are every Saturday from May 5 through September 29 at 1pm. If you are interested in becoming a volunteer tour guide, or to find out more about the Shaker Heritage Society, please contact Samantha Hall, Education Coordinator, at 456-7890 x23 or shakereducator@gmail.com. Tours begin at the 1848 Shaker Meeting House at the site of America’s first Shaker settlement. The historic site is adjacent to Albany International Airport off of Heritage Lane. (P)

Salary might garner all the glory, but many times ad-ditional benefits are just as significant when one is decid-ing to accept or decline a job offer. The offer with the high-est salary isn’t necessarily the ultimate deal for everyone. Instead, it’s best to consider additional benefits before making such an important decision.
Perks go beyond dollars and cents* Retirement: Pensions are largely a thing of the past, but companies that do pro-vide pension plans should merit heavy consideration. But even if most applicants are unlikely to find a com-pany with a pension plan, there is the issue of a 401(k) and whether a company will match an employee’s con-tributions. Companies will typically only match up to a certain percentage, but a company that does match em-ployee contributions should be very appealing.
* Vacation: Vacation time and how employees earn it is relatively standard, but some companies do offer bet-ter packages than others. In general, employees who have been with the company 1 to 3 years get two weeks of vaca-tion time, while those who have been with a company for 4 to 10 years typically receive three weeks vacation time.
However, not all companies adhere to this standard, and some might require employ-ees to work as many as six years before earning a third week of vacation. Applicants must decide if salary or ad-ditional vacation time is a higher priority.
* Medical insurance: Medi-cal insurance varies greatly depending on the company. Larger companies might of-fer more affordable medical insurance, giving them a dis-tinct advantage over smaller companies when applicants have a spouse and children to consider.
* Holidays: Holidays are typ-ically a minor consideration, but some applicants might prefer a job that guarantees they get all of the major holidays off, even if it means taking less in salary. Appli-cants who typically travel significant distances during the holidays might want a job
that gives them an extra day, such as the day after Thanks-giving, rather than one that requires they use a vacation or personal day to travel dur-ing the holidays.
* Tuition assistance: Some companies provide tuition assistance to employees who want to continue their edu-cation. Such assistance can be worth thousands of dol-lars, mitigating any concerns about lower salary offers.
* Stock options: Stock op-tions below market value might make a job more ap-pealing even if the initial sal-ary offer doesn’t compare to other offers.
* Child care: The cost of child care is substantial, and men and women with children to consider might prefer a job that assists with, or complete-ly covers, those costs more than a job that simply offers the best salary.

Guys love gadgets. Be it the newest smartphone or the latest model television, men revel in staying up-to-date on the latest gadgets and gizmos to hit the market. While many popular gadgets are geared toward entertainment, some are aimed at making life safer for consumers. Such is the case with the following gad-gets and innovations, each of which makes the roadways safer for drivers and their pas-sengers.
* Blind spot detectors: Blind spot detectors and interven-tion systems use radar or im-age detectors on side mirrors to determine if an object is in the car’s blind spots. Inter-vention systems are connect-ed to the braking system of the car. The systems pull the vehicle back to safety should
These gadgets make driving safer
the driver attempt to change lanes into potential danger. While this technology has the potential to prevent accidents, sometimes the detectors of-fer false positive warnings, picking up oncoming traffic, parked cars and even trees.
* Back-up cameras: In an era of monster-sized vans and trucks, some drivers have dif-ficulty gauging the length of the vehicle with respect to items behind it. Also, taller vehicles may have obstruct-ed vision in the back by the rear bumper, which can be a safety hazard should a child or object be in the path of the auto. The camera can provide an image of what’s behind the vehicle to better assess whether it’s safe to go in re-verse. A beeping sound or other signal also may alert to a potential obstruction.
* Lane departure warning: This mechanism is designed to warn a driver when a ve-hicle begins to move out of its lane, unless a turn signal is activated to alert to the lane
change. These systems use a camera or another tracking device to pick up on the visu-al lines on a roadway, accom-modating for turns. Some will signal with an audible sound, visual notification or a vibra-tion of the steering wheel if the driver is veering into another lane. Other systems will work in concert with the steering to keep the car in its lane.
* Night-vision technology: Individuals who do a good portion of driving at night may want to consider night-vision options on a vehicle. This is a system that increas-es the driver’s perception and seeing distance in darkness or poor weather beyond the scope of headlights. Many systems rely on the driver looking at a screen that por-trays a video image, which some assert is a danger in itself because it takes one’s eyes off of the road.
