ADDITIONAL HABITAT OPTIONS – REEF BALLS

Primary Goal: Create protective fish habitatMaterial: Selective pH concreteSize Range:• Diameter: 1.5 ft - 6.5 ft• Weight: 50 lbs – 6,000 lbs

Source: Reef Ball Foundation

Additional Benefits:• Exterior provides oyster colonization

habitat• Proven wave attenuation devices

Installation Options (General, not Gansevoort Specific): • Resting directly on substrate• Anchoring to existing structure• Support Piles driven through substrate into

bedrock

NYC Deployment:• West Harlem Waterfront Park, Tappan

Zee bridge & Jamaica Bay

ADDITIONAL HABITAT OPTIONS – OYSTER GABIONS

Primary Goal: Foster oyster propagationMaterial: SteelSize Range: Can be built to a range of sizes

Additional Benefits:• Floating gabions can be incorporated into

educational programming• Simple materials allow for flexible

installation & sizing

Component Features:• Steel gabion structures with galvanized

steel mesh• Contains oyster and clam shells, populated

using spat-on-shell method. • As the galvanized steel mesh deteriorates,

cemented oyster populations hold structure together

NYC Deployment:• Brooklyn Bridge Park, Governors Island,

Hudson Reefs and Staten Island

Pier 55 Gansevoort PeninsulaFDNY Marine 1 Utility Building Day’s End

What is the relationship between our architecture and its landscape? We are situated in between the organic landscape material of our park and the lightness and ephemerality of metal frames of the Day’s End installation.

ARCHITECTURE LANDSCAPE: ORGANIC TO MINERAL TO METAL

Oyster harvesting Oyster harvesting structures

Wall of light cubed, Sean ScullyOyster shell

We are considering evoking the history of the site: the oysters and/or oyster harvesting infrastructure and the historic materials of 13th Ave. promenade. These site aspects may inform the material or tectonic expression of the building.

ARCHITECTURE LANDSCAPE: HISTORICAL + LANDSCAPE CUTS

Yohji Yamamoto store, New York, Ishigami Junya Sea Level, New York, Richard Serra

Days End, Gordon Matta-ClarkDays End, Gordon Matta-Clark

We are inspired by David Hammon’s installation and its reference to Matta-Clark’s Days End. Matta-Clark cut an existing warehouse in three places to create ‘a temple for sun and light’ and transform an utilitarian structure into an almost spiritual experience.

While Hammon’s piece does not replicate the three cuts, we are loosely evoking them.

We are cutting into landscape to create connections to water and into the canopy to shape light and shadow.

5nARCHITECTSGansevoort PeninsulaCommunity Outreach: July 24, 2019

ARCHITECTURE LANDSCAPE: ACTIVATE WALLS

Our building program (largely storage and restrooms) is essentially opaque. How do you create visual relief for these building volumes?

Can we activate the walls if not with openings, then with texture or amenities?

Can we rethink the walls as an armature for organic elements (oysters), landscape (rocks) or activities (sports equipment)?
