PROJECT LIFT UNIVERSITY FUNDRAISER SARATOGA SPRINGS – Franklin Community Center’s Project Lift has been serving the Saratoga Springs community and local families in need for over 30 years. In that time countless youth in the Saratoga Springs City School District have been involved with this unique and life-changing program, touching the lives of not just the children, but their families and neighbors as well. Franklin Community Center is proud to announce the program will be expanded to include Dorothy Nolan and Caroline Street Elementary Schools this October and will be in all six of the local elemen- tary schools beginning October 2016. Project Lift is a free after-school prevention program operated by Franklin Community Center that offers a safe, caring and structured environment for youth in grades 1-5. The pro- gram’s unique approach heightens children’s social and emotional com- petence, improves decision-making skills, offers lessons on the prevention of tobacco, drugs, alcohol and bullying, boosts self-esteem and helps strengthen the bond between child, family, school and community. Fami- lies also receive other ancillary services offered by Franklin Community Center such as holiday assistance, summer camp scholarships, basic ne- cessities and guidance. In order to build awareness and raise essential funds for Project Lift, Franklin Community Center is hosting their 5th an- nual Project Lift University, a benefit uniquely designed for the program it- self. The evening includes amazing food from Longfellows, live music by Jim Mastrianni & Kristen Renenhan, tarot card reading, open bar, a large silent auction and photo booth. A live mission based auction led by come- dian Greg Aidala and a Pick Six Vodka tasting will round out the fun. Proj- ect Lift University, presented by Informz, will be held on October 8th, at 6:00pm at Longfellows in Saratoga Springs. All proceeds will go to benefit Project Lift. Tickets are on sale now. You can purchase your tickets online at www.franklincommunitycenter.org or by calling Franklin Community Center at 518-587-9826.

The busy fall gardening season is in full swing. Bulbs are getting planted, the lawn’s gotten its final mowing (hopefully) and feeding. Soil has been tested and lime applied as needed. After frost occurs, any perennials that needed moving or dividing should be tended to. Any tender, summer-flowering bulbs will be lifted and stored in their boxes of sterile vermiculite and placed into storage for the long winter ahead. My wife and I have collected seeds from our favorite annuals and vegetables and their waiting in their envelopes for the day in March or April when it comes time to sow them inside for next years garden. All the bird feeders have been thoroughly cleaned with bleach and filled so we can count on visits from our feathered friends (and maybe deer and turkeys) to liven the cold, snowy days ahead. About the only thing left on the garden work list is the construction of windbreaks. The greatest threat is to shrubs, trees and perennials planted this year. Since they aren’t established yet, they may need some extra protection. Remember that desiccation (dehydration) is the greatest threat to landscape plantings. The cold arctic wind that blows from the north and west is the worst culprit. The sun contributes to the drying effect, especially in late winter when the plants are still dormant, unable to take up moisture, but the air is warm. Rhododendron, Holly, Laurel, and other broadleaf evergreens are in the worst danger of being damaged by desiccation. Though they are evergreens, they still enter a dormant stage as the ground freezes. This means that whatever moisture within them at the time they go dormant is all they have to make it through until spring. Any rain will keep evaporation to a minimum, but the dry, windy, frigid days of January and February will give these plants little respite. You can protect them by spraying them with an anti-desiccant spray. These sprays coat the leaves and stems, helping prevent moisture loss over winter. The spray should be applied on a dry day when temperatures are above freezing. This will give the spray a chance to dry without freezing. If we get a January thaw, it’s a good idea to spray again for an added measure of protection. In spring, when the plant swells with new growth, the anti-desiccant coating cracks and falls away. Two well known anti-desiccant sprays are ‘Wilt-Pruf’ and ‘Envy’. You can also use these sprays on your Christmas tree or wreath to greatly reduce needle drop over the holidays. Constructing burlap windbreaks is also a good method of protecting evergreens for the winter. I use hardwood stakes driven about a foot into the ground. I then staple burlap to them. The idea is to block as much wind as possible. I will implant 3 or 4 stakes around each plant I want to protect and staple burlap around the shrub leaving the top open. If I were to cover the top, the shrub could be crushed if too much snow accumulates. Leaving the top open allows rain and snow to pass through, refreshing the shrub as much as possible. For recently planted (within the last two or three years) evergreen hedges (arborvitae, etc.) you’ll want to install a row of stakes on the west or north side and attach burlap to them. Remember, wind that comes from the east or south is warmer and gentler. You want to concentrate your windbreak construction to protect from the much harsher prevailing winds that blow from the north and west. Snow, sliding from the eaves and crushing shrubs, is another problem. To protect them, you’ll need to construct or purchase wooden shrub covers. The A-frame type seems to deflect snow the best. I pound some short, sturdy stakes at the bottom faces of the A-frame to keep the bases from kicking out when a large slide falls from the roof. Once all the windbreaks and shrub protectors are all in place, the gardener has little left to do but daydream about and make plans for next year’s gardens. Soon the latest crop of seed and plant catalogs will begin to arrive to tempt us with new and old fashioned varieties. The successes and failures of this year’s gardens are now only memories. Now we get a break from garden chores and have a chance to reflect on the season even as we look forward to the next. Thanks for the read.

DID YOU KNOW?Many major auto manufacturers provide bumper-to-bumper factory warranties that expireonce a car is three years old or exceeds 36,000 miles, and such milestones are importantfigures for preowned vehicle shoppers to consider before buying their next preownedvehicle. When buying a car that's more than three years old or one that has close to ormore than 36,000 miles on its odometer, prospective buyers should ask for the vehicle'smaintenance records before making a purchase. Since many vehicles need their firstsignificant servicing somewhere around 40,000 miles, it's important for preowned vehiclebuyers to know what they're buying and just how soon they might be on the hook for re-pairs after buying a vehicle. Buyers should avoid purchasing any vehicles with suspectmaintenance histories and may even be able to cite anticipated maintenance when ne-gotiating the price of the vehicle
