Why DS8880 with Integrated Flash?
IBM Systems 14
• 1U drawer … 30 Flash cards (1.8″ form factor)
− developed in synergy with System p, FlashSystem and DS8000 development teams
• Optimised for true flash performance
• Integrated RAID and switch function
− Capabilities that are provided in the Device Adapter (RAID) and Storage Enclosure
(switch) for traditional HDDs and SSDs
• Two large-cache SAS adapters especially designed for Flash
− With 800 GB drives = up to 24 TB raw
− Directly connected to DS8000 internal PCIe fabric
• High-Performance Flash Enclosure is x8 PCIe attached to both POWER8 servers in
the base frame
− New slot positions in I/O bays are used
− DS8870: x4 attachment / + adapter cards to redrive the PCIe signal to the enclosure
• Enterprise class RAS
- High-Availability 2W Cluster
- RAID 5/10 mirrored/protected write cache
• Easy Tier enabled

Adjustable top enables rack to stretch from 40U to 46U once rack is in place
• Can be performed by a single SSR – no heavy components
• Top is never removed from the rack
• Extension to the front and rear door to cover
• Can be added as a MES without disruption
Base 40U

Remove bolts to release
top. Extend top up, one
end at a time.
Add side panel/EIA rails and secure
with bolts. Release extension corner
posts and lock down.
Final assembly with
top extended to 46U

SSD refers to a flash media based storage device that is accessed and
managed as a logical disk drive, consisting of a standard disk drive
interface (such as SAS or SATA). Their sizes are 1.8 and 2.5 inches
Flash technology can be used in many forms …
IBM Systems Flash Storage Offerings
All-flash array (AFA)
Mixed
(HDD/SSD/CFH)All-Custom Flash
Hardware (CFH)All-SSD
Hybrid-flash array (HFA)
CFH defines an architecture that uses optimised flash modules to provide
better performance and lower latency than SSDs. Examples of CFH are:
• High-Performance Flash Enclosure Gen-2
• FlashSystem MicroLatency Module
• All-flash arrays are storage solutions that only use
flash media (CFH or SSDs) designed to deliver maximum
performance for application and workload where speed is critical.
• Hybrid-flash arrays are storage solutions that
support a mix of HDDs, SSDs and CFH designed to provide a
balance between performance, capacity and cost for a variety of
workloads
The DS8880 Family offers All-flash and Hybrid-flash with CFH,
SSD and HDD configurations designed to satisfy a wide range of
business needs from superior performance to cost efficient
requirementsSource: IDC's Worldwide Flash in the Datacenter Taxonomy, 2016

Flash brings real benefits that justify the investment by far …
Besides the performance benefits, there are additional compelling advantages when
adopting Flash technology
Source: Justifying Investment in All-Flash Arrays. IDC August 2016
1.Meet or exceed the performance
level agreements with far fewer
devices
2.Flash requires lower energy
and less floor space
consumption
3.Fewer servers are required
due to better CPU utilization
4. Fewer servers require
less spending on
software licenses
5. Lower operating and
administrative costs
6. Better reliability since flash is
based on electronic rather
than mechanical media

RAID-6 for mission-critical protection
Drive media is rapidly increasing in capacity to 10 TB and more. The greater density provides real
cost advantages but requires changes in the types of RAID protection used.
In order to improve data availability, IBM moves protection to the next level by enabling RAID-6
as default in the GUI for all drive types.
1 2 3 4 5 6 P
S
RAID-5
1 2 3 4 5 Q P
S
RAID-6
RAID-5 uses one parity drive whereas RAID-6 uses two
RAID-6 ensures business continuity for mission-critical applications because: Data is still protected event if a second drive fails while the first failed drive is being rebuilt
Information placed in unreadable regions in a specific drive can be detected, isolated and recovered
from the remaining drives
RAID-6 provides a 1000x improvement over RAID-5 for impact risk
The use of RAID-6 rather than RAID-5 can dramatically reduce the probability of drive failures
providing increased protection for workloads where data integrity is critical
The DS8880 family takes the increased risks posed by high-capacity drives very seriously

Performance is based on measurements and projections using standard IBM benchmarks in a controlled environment. The actual throughput or performance that any user will experience will vary depending upon considerations such as the amount of multiprogramming in the user’s job stream, the I/O configuration, the storage configuration, and the workload processed. Therefore, no assurance can be given that an individual user will achieve throughput or performance improvements equivalent to the ratios stated here.
