CAPITAL DISTRICT FUTURE CITY® COMPETITION
January
2018
About Future City… The Future City® Competition is a national program sponsored by DiscoverE (formerly National Engineers Week). The mission of the Future City® Competition is to provide a fun and exciting educational engineering program for 6th, 7th and 8th grade students that combines a stimulating engineering challenge with a "hands-on" application to present their vision of a city of the future. This year marks the 26th year for the National Future City® Competition with 40 regions participating, effecting over 40,000 students from 1,350 middle schools. The Capital District Region Future City® Competition celebrates 17 years of fostering the creative engineering imaginations of local middle school students. Today, one of the 30 participating teams will be named our 2018 Regional Winner by the close of the awards ceremony this afternoon. This team will represent the Capital District in the National Future City® Competition in Washington, D.C. to be held, Feb. 17–21, 2018. The Future City project has five phases: to plan, design, build, write, and present a city of the future. Each competing team works with a guiding teacher and engineer-mentor to complete the project. The team is represented by three students during the presentation phase of the Regional Competition.
Phase I: Project Plan (10 points) Teams follow a project plan template to set goals for their project, create a schedule with defined tasks for identified deliverables, conduct check-ins to monitor progress, and reflect on their experience.
Phase II: Design a City (48 points) Students choose two goals that they want to achieve while developing their city of at least 20,000 Sims using SimCity software. The city may exist in any environment, location or celestial body and must present itself as a sustainable community. Teams use PowerPoint, Word or Google Slides to build a presentation with screenshots at two development stages of their city showing its growth and prosperity against their city’s set goals.
Phase III: City Description/Essay (60 points) Each team writes an essay (max. 1500 words) describing the city’s key features, design attributes, infrastructure, public services and engineering solution to this year’s assigned engineering related topic. This year’s topic is The Age-Friendly City: Identify an age-related challenge existing in today's urban environments and engineer two solutions that allow your future city's senior citizens to be as active and independent as they want to be.
Phase IV: Build the City (70 points) The team builds a 3-D model that is a creative representation best representing the team’s vision of a section of their city (similar to the computer design concepts). The overall model size is limited to 25” wide x 50” long x 20” tall and built to a scale defined by the team. Each city model must contain at least one moving part such as transportation, power generation or communications. Material costs for the entire project may not exceed $100 (cash and in-kind). Students are encouraged to use recycled items such as plastic, glass and tin.
Phase V: Communicate the Results (70 points) Finally, the team's three student representatives present their city model to a panel of engineering and technical professionals with a 7-minute verbal presentation followed by a 5-minute question and answer period. Posters and demonstration aids may be used within the guidelines of the competition.
Judging Results Scores from the project plan, computer city design, city description/essay, 3-D model, and verbal presentation are totaled to determine the Region’s top three finalists (maximum total = 258 pts). The top three teams present their 3-D model and city again in the finalist round. The scores from the final presentation and re-evaluation of the 3-D models are added to the pre-judged project plan, computer city design, and city description scores to determine the Regional Winner.

CAPITAL DISTRICT FUTURE CITY® COMPETITION

2018
CONGRATS TO OUR TWO SCHOLARSHIP WINNERS! For the first time, the Albany-NY Region is giving “Alumnus of the Year” college scholarships to two former Future City participants! Noah Wiederhold is currently a senior at the Burnt Hills-Ballston Lake High School and a charter member of the first team from the Richard H. O’Rourke Middle School. Noah has stayed active in the program by being a Future City Team Mentor after leaving middle school. He is a member of National Honor Society, Science National Honor Society, and the NYS Mathematics Honor Society. He wrote in his essay, “Building the Sim City model perked my interest in gaming and virtual strategy. I have since become heavily involved in computer programming in high school and plan to pursue a career in computer science and information systems.” Mary Hamilla is also currently a senior at the Burnt Hills-Ballston Lake High School and a charter member of the first team from the Richard H. O’Rourke Middle School. She has also stayed active in the program by mentoring the team after leaving middle school. Her goal is to become a biomedical engineer. She wrote in her essay, “[The Burnt Hills-Ballston Lake team] won first place the second year we had become a team. We then prepared for Nationals and travelled to Washington D.C., which is an experience I will cherish forever. While we did not bring home any awards, we placed in the top 15 and came home with our heads held high.” Noah and Mary will receive a $500 scholarship to assist with their college tuition, books, or living expenses. If you or someone you know is interested in applying for next year’s scholarship, please check our website at www.futurecity.org/new-york-albany.

CAPITAL DISTRICT FUTURE CITY® COMPETITION
January
2018
On Saturday, October 14th, Future City students attended an essay and Sim City tutorial at the Mont Pleasant Middle School in Schenectady, NY. The tutorial allowed students to more fully explore the capabilities, needs, and wishes of older adults. The tutorial included panelists that discussed innovative technologies and communities available to seniors, and how communities can be better designed for “aging in place.” A highlight of our tutorial were small breakout groups led by senior panelists:
Judy Drake, retired art teacher Phyllis Aldrich, retired BOCES Enrichment Coordinator
JoAnne Robbins, retired BOCES Curriculum, Instructional, and Technology Coordinator, and
Kathy Dorcey, retired Registered Nurse. The panelists spoke about their practical living needs and concerns, as well as the community resources that they find enriching, such as their community library. The panelists also challenged students to brainstorm innovative ways to engage seniors more meaningfully in their communities. Other speakers at the tutorial included professors Stacy Torres and Betty Hurley. Ms. Torres is an Assistant Professor of Sociology at the University at Albany, specializing in community and sociological issues involving aging. With the students she explored how older people maintain their independence when faced with multiple vulnerabilities, and why seniors often feel disengaged with their communities. Ms. Hurley is a mathematics professor at Empire State College. She shared with students her experience exploring innovative community concepts such as the Treehouse Community that supports foster children, and other intentional communities. In addition, she shared unique technologies available today, such as vehicles that can be operated by drivers in a wheelchair. Aaron Kingery spoke to students about Sim City and answered questions about how to maximize their points during the scoring process. A network engineer with New England Systems and Software, Mr. Kingery instructed students on how to effectively document the progress of their virtual cities and provided links to additional support documents. Finally, Donna Liquori McGuire from the AARP spoke to the students. She is coming back as our Keynote Presenter today at the Regional Finals. You can find more information about Ms. Liquori on Page 23.
