JOIN LENTEN ROSARY CHALLENGE FOR WORLD PEACE

BALLSTON SPA Our Lady Queen of Peace Prayer Group at St. Marys Church in Ballston Spa invites you to be part of a Lent-en Rosary Challenge for World Peace from Ash Wednesday until Easter Sunday. The Rosary Telethon will run throughout the 40 days of Lent until April 5. Were inviting everyone to join us in pledging to pray one Mystery of the Rosary each day during this time, said Josie Uhlinger. Our goal is to reach 33,000 Rosaries prayed to Our Lady imploring her sons di-vine mercy to save this world that is now in crisis. Noting the Rosary may be prayed at any time at your convenience, in-dividually or with your family or friends, Mrs. Uhlinger said the key is to pray the Rosary devoutly from the heart, as Our Lady instructed the children at Fatima to do in 1917. A display showing weekly progress of completed Rosaries will be posted on the bulletin at the back of the Church together with a pamphlet titled Pray the Rosary Daily -- which details how to say the Rosary. The community is also invited to join in Our Lady Queen of Peace prayer meetings on March 17 and 31. For more information, Josie Uhlinger at 885-9620 or Cheryl Smith at 587-9856.

2015 PROJECT EASTER BUNNY CAPITAL DISTRICT Floydwarriors.com Helping Families Cope with Cancer, One Household at a Time is very pleased to announce its 6th annual run of Project Easter Bunny. Floy-dwarriors.com founder Lisa Morahan began this eff ort after experiencing Easter Sunday in 2009 too ill to make one bas-ket up for her son while in the middle of chemotherapy treat-ment. In 2010 enough toys and candy were collected to make up 100 baskets, 135 in 2011, 190 in 2012, 225 in 2013 and 290 in 2014. Our goal is to collect enough new small toys and candy for 350 baskets this year and add yet another oncology center to our list of glad recipients. Several area cancer orga-nizations and hospitals caring for cancer patients will receive this years bounty so children of those in treatment will have a nice big basket to open on Easter morning. Locations to re-ceive baskets hope to include The CR Wood Center at Glens Falls Hospital, Samaritan Hospital in Troy, The Mollie Wilmot Radiation Oncology Center at Saratoga Hospital, The Com-munity Hospice of Saratoga, The Hope Club in Latham, New York Oncology Hematology of Albany and Rexford, CRAAB, To Life! and families helped by fl oydwarriors.com. If you are interested in helping this eff ort, please bring unopened candy and brand new small toys to donate to the following locations until March 17th: The CR Wood Center in Glens Falls Hospital, The Malta Community Center, Bella Rouge at Clifton Park Center, The Hope Club in Latham and any Ballston Spa National Bank location.

WHAT IS CORNED BEEF?At least once a year people gather to enjoy a dish that is widely associated with Irish cul-ture. Corned beef is a meat that is customarily served alongside potatoes and cabbage. Many people understand the beef part of the corned beef name, but do not understand the corned part.

Corning refers to pickling meat in brine. Brines, which are composed of salt water, were often used to preserve meats when refrigeration was not available.

According to the Department of Agriculture, the word corn comes from Anglo-Saxon times when meat was dry-cured in coarse corns of salt. Pellets of salt were rubbed into the meat to preserve it.

Corned beef brines today contain more than just salt. They may have di erent spices and avorings to add to the taste of the meat.

Can Pick It Up At These Locations

Right about now the packaged dormant bulbs are arriving at the garden centers. Among them will be one of my favorites: the easy-to-grow lilies. I add more every year and am still amazed at how quickly the establish themselves and multiply. No wonder I love them so much. The lilium segment of the larger liliacae family contains some of the showiest flowers to be found anywhere and many of the thousands of cultivars thrive in our northern climate including two of my favorites; Asiatic and Oriental Hybrids. Asiatic hybrids are the first of the lilies to flower in early summer. They are also the most cold tolerant of all lilium forms. Asiatics also mature and reproduce rapidly, making them a rewarding choice for those just starting to dabble in lily growing. Asiatics are available in reds, whites, pinks, oranges, and yellows of every shade. Some feature solid colored petals while others are ornately speckled. Asiatics are not strongly scented but come in a range of sizes from 2 to 5! To find fragrance, we must sniff out the Oriental lily hybrids. Although not quite as winter hardy as their Asiatic cousins, many Oriental varieties are hardy in zones 4 and 5; hardy enough to thrive in our area. Oriental lilies will produce some of the largest, showiest flowers that you could expect this side of the tropics. A sub-group of the Oriental lilies are the Imperial hybrids. Imperial lilies produce large, sometimes huge flowers on sturdy stems. The Imperial Gold strain, for instance, produces 5 to 7 fragrant flowers on plants up to 7 tall. Thats right, 7! Those who travel the tropics and return whining that we cant grow anything to compare should wake up and smell the lilies! All lilium varieties grow from bulbs. Youll start seeing them in garden centers in March. Theyll be offered bare-root in plastic bags. Shop for them early so you can pick out the fattest ones from the group offered. The fatter the bulb, the better the plant. Plant your lilies as soon as the ground has thawed. Choose a location that is in full sun and make sure its a location that doesnt puddle up after a heavy rain. Dig your holes about 3 times as deep as the bulb is tall. As usual, Ill insist that you add bone meal to the planting hole. After enjoying your lilies for 3 or 4 years, youll notice that youre getting more plants and flowers but they arent as tall as they used to be. This is a signal that theyre crowded and need to be dug and divided. This can be done in fall after frost or early spring when theyve just started to sprout from the soil (adding more bone meal of course). There are many more lilies than the two mentioned here. Theyre showy and very easy to grow making them a great choice for the novice or experienced gardener who wants to impress friends and neighbors. Another of my favorite bulbs available in packages this time of year are the irises. Irises generally flower early in the season so they really stand out as a harbinger of the warm days of summer to come. Like the lilies, irises are easy to grow and multiply quickly; attributes that make them welcome in my flowerbeds. The thousands of modern iris varieties are descendants of the approximately 150 species that are found growing naturally around the world. They grow from tuberous rootstock called rhizomes. In early spring (any day now) youll find them for sale in the garden center bare-root in plastic bags. When youre shopping for iris rhizomes, dont just look at the pretty picture on the package. Inspect the rhizomes through the bag. Feel them. They should be firm to the touch and show no signs of mold. Pick out the biggest and fattest of the bunch (a good argument for shopping early). The bigger the rhizome the better the better the flowers. If you cant plant them right away, just store them in a cool spot until the ground thaws. Bearded and Dwarf Bearded Irises are most commonly found in bare root offerings. The popular Bearded Irises come in almost any color combination imaginable. Theyll range in height from about 15 to 36. Mature Bearded Irises will have 3 to 5 flowers on each stem that opens in early spring. Dwarf Bearded Iris varieties grow to heights of no more than 8 or so. Bearded and Dwarf Bearded Irises prefer to be planted in full sun in soil thats been enriched with plenty of organic matter. The area should be well drained to avoid rotting rhizomes. Later in spring, Japanese and Siberian irises will appear in the garden center as potted perennial plants rather than bare-root rhizomes. Japanese Irises are some of the tallest Iris groups with some cultivars getting as tall as 4. Japanese irises can tolerate some light shade and perform best when planted in an area with damp acidic soil. Along a stream or a boggy pond bank would be a great spot for Japanese Irises. The easy-to-grow Siberian irises have been gaining in popularity. This is due to its ability to grow in locations that are drier than other irises prefer. Siberian Irises have narrower leaves and smaller flowers than other iris varieties. Theyll do best when planted in full sun or partial shade. Like other irises, Siberian Irises prefer acidic soil with lots of organic but are more forgiving of less-than-ideal conditions. Another iris will appear at the garden center late in spring in the display of plants for water gardening. Yellow Flag or Water Flag Irises grows to a height of about 3. The flowers of this moisture loving iris are bright yellow sometimes highlighted with purple veins. The bluish green leaves contrast nicely with the bright yellow flowers. Variegated cultivars are available that have yellow striped leaves in spring that gradually turn green as summer progresses. Yellow Flag Irises should be planted in organic-rich, damp areas. It is a bog plant that will do poorly if planted where it dries out at all. Irises mature quickly so, be ready to divide them every few years. A group of irises that is overgrown will form a ring as the original plants die out in the center. Dig these clumps up in early spring and divide by chopping into several smaller clumps and replant. Make sure to freshen up the soil with more organic matter before replanting. Irises as a group are one of my favorites. Theyre easy and prolific and, since they flower early in the season theyll chase those winter blues away long before we see signs of life from most of our garden plants. Give them a try; youll be glad you did. Thanks for the read.

Princess Zelda - the hero mom! Zelda is a super soft and sweet girl that has been very busy rais-ing her three kittens over the past few months. Zelda was a fantastic momma, always grooming her babies and making sure they learned how to pounce and play.... Everybody is weaned now and Zelda is all ready for a home of her own she just cant wait to be an empty nester!! Zelda is a little shy at first- she likes some time to observe people before coming over for attention...if you

    Zelda

    Corrine

give her a little space all the sudden you will be her new best friend. Gentle head and ear scratches are her favorite. Zelda is a really beautiful muted tiger cat with mesmerizing thoughtful eyes and cute little white tipped toes. Zelda

gets very stressed out in the car carrier and at our adoption clinics so the best way to meet her would be to visit her at her foster family. Zelda is ~ 2 years

old, is spayed, up to date on her shots and negative for FIV/FeLV.

This sweet, very unique, female ginger tabby has her eye on you...shes shy but always look-ing for someone to pet her. Corrine is a really

lovely kitty that needs a special family with the patience to let her get to know them. Once you earn her trust you will have a steady bedtime companion and will know just how much she

loves to be petted when she arches up to you and flicks her tail. Corinne was abandoned with her siblings and had to fend for herself with her 4 brothers before she was rescued by HOPE. If you are looking for a cat that really needs saving and that rewarding feeling of gaining the trust of an animal thats not always had the best experiences with people then consid-er Corinne. Shes come a long way, is loving and sweet with her foster family who shes been with many months, and is ready to meet her new forever family. Do

you have a big enough heart to welcome in Corinne? We promise shes worth it if you just have a little patience. Corinne has a few favorite housemates - Crowley, Ace & Abbie, she gets along with all the other cats and also is fine with dogs.

Corinne is spayed, up to date on her shots and negative for FIV and FeLV.

GETTING THE BEST PRICE FOR YOUR HOUSE TO HELP FINANCE YOUR RETIREMENT

(NewsUSA) - Have you forgotten something in fi guring where

    you're going to retire to?

Let's see, you've researched which states tax Social Secu-rity income (only 14, including Colorado, Connecticut, Kan-sas, North Dakota and Vermont).

And you've even consulted the numbers-crunchers at Bankrate.com to learn which states scored highest overall in everything from cost of living to access to health care (South Dakota, Colorado, Utah, North Dakota and Wyoming).

But here's a question for all you homeowners: Given the results of a new report from Better Homes and Gardens Real Estate -- 57 percent of boomers say they plan to move to a new home in retirement -- what are you doing right now to make sure your current house fetches a good price to help fi nance your retirement dreams?

"As people grapple with whether to pull up stakes, there's small margin for error," the New York Times' coverage of the report noted.

Here's some tips for preparing what's likely your biggest asset for prospective buyers:

    * Get rid of the clutter. No doubt you have years worth of memories on display. But they're your memories. And painful as it may be, it's time to accept that not everyone appreciates having turned your den, for example, into a shrine to the '69 Mets.

"Buyers shouldn't be distracted from imagining them-selves living in your space," says Patsy O'Neill, a sales associ-ate with Sotheby's in Montclair, New Jersey.

    * Think twice before doing any trendy remodeling. Espe-cially if your home is older, you may be tempted to go as far in trying to spruce things up as, say, tearing down a wall be-tween the kitchen and an adjoining room just because An-gie's List says creating the feel of more space is "one of the hottest trends in home remodeling."

Well who's to say it'll still be hot in six months or a year?

    * Think "curb appeal." There's a reason roof replacement consistently makes Remodeling magazine's annual Cost vs. Value Report, and is up 11.2 percent this year over even last year: A roof is the fi rst thing potential buyers notice -- even from down the street -- and you've already lost the sale if yours looks like hell.

"It's a huge turn-off ," says O'Neill, "and makes people pre-disposed to fi nd even more things they don't like." For the
