BROOKSIDE MUSEUM TO CLOSE IN JANUARYBALLSTON SPA - The Saratoga County Historical Society announced that its headquarters, Brookside Museum, will be closed during the month of January. “Brookside has sustained some staggering losses in funding over the past few years,” said Joy Houle, Executive Director of the Saratoga County Historical Society. “This year (2013) has been particularly challenging since Saratoga County cut 100% support for the museum. Without that funding, something has to be cut. And we’d rather cut a month out of our year than a program like to Sheep to Shawl.” Brookside will be closed after December 31 and will reopen on Tuesday, February 4 at 10 a.m. The museum will host an opening reception on Friday, February 7 (6-9) for the tempo-rary exhibit titled, “The Women Who Work Here,” which features the creations of the museum’s female staff, Board, and volunteers.

BradyBrady is an active 3-year old neutered male Border Collie/Lab mix,

who is up to date on his shots and micro-chipped. He is a very loving and loyal dog who needs room to run. Brady is house trained and if you place a small bell on the door, he will ring it when he

needs to go out! He is good with kids and dogs and is crate trained.

Buddy is a 2 year male neutered Pit/mix. He is loving, sweet, and cuddly. He’s perfectly happy laying in your lap sleeping, being pet,

and snuggling. He’s housebroken, but has occasional accidents. Buddy is very gentle, and good with adults and kids. He’s been left alone, gated into an area, and has done fine. Buddy is very bow legged. He doesn’t limp, but he occasionally waddles a bit. The vet said

he will probably always be special needs due to his legs. The vet determined it was a birth defect and should not run hard or be

taken on long walks. Buddy should also remain his ideal weight and not be overfed which will put taxing weight on his joints. He may end up with arthritis, and will possibly need pain meds as he gets older. Buddy leads a very mellow lifestyle which will be a blessing

to the right loving family.

Marley

Bentley is a 3-year old neutered male Pomeranian, who is up to date on his shots and micro-chipped. He likes to ride in the car and is

good with older children and other small dogs, though he does not seem to be fond of cats. Bentley is house trained and walks well

on a leash.

Bentley

Marley is a playful, fun two year old tabby cat. She was discovered as a nine month old kitten on a country road riddled with fleas and starving. From the time she arrived at her foster home she has been a doll. She rubs against people, encourag-ing them to pet her. She loves to hitch a ride on shoulders

whenever the opportunity arises. Marley enjoys being wherever people are. She loves to be around other cats and is great with

dogs. For more information about Marley, please contact her foster mother, Karla, at [email protected].

Buddy

Baby Grey Grey is a neutered 3-4 month old male who is up to date on all his shots. Look at that face- don’t you just want to

cuddle him and make him smile for the rest of his life?

The days are so short and dreary now that it is pretty easy for the gardener to feel a little down with spring so far away. One way that I shake off the midwinter blues is to spend some time in my south facing room enjoying whatever sunshine our short days can muster among the houseplants that spend the winter there. Regular readers have heard before about my collection of miniature geraniums. Rest assured, they’re all doing well and are responding to the slightly longer days with a burst of new growth and several are so happy with their situ-ation that they’ve popped out a few buds. In a couple of weeks I’ll be enjoying a preview of summer when these little beauties burst into fl ower.

Besides my collection of miniature geraniums, there are other fl owering plants that have managed to fi nd their way into my indoor garden. The African Violet is, without question, the most popular of all fl owering houseplants. Their prolifi c blossoms and soft, fuzzy leaves have delighted indoor gardeners for years. We’ve all heard stories about great-grandma’s prized violet whose descendents are still grown and loved by current family members.

The fi rst requirement to consider for growing African Violets is light. Violets need very strong but indirect sunlight. Many folks fi nd that a bright north-facing window is an ideal spot to grow African Violets. They’ll also thrive under fl uorescent lights.

The second requirement is temperature. They prefer a daytime temperature of at least 70 degrees and should remain above 64 degrees at night.

Most folks don’t have too much trouble meeting the light and temperature needs of Af-rican Violets. The trickiest part of African Violet care is watering. Violets need to be kept lightly moist constantly and will not appreciate drying out completely. Realizing this, most folks overcompensate by keeping their Violets soggy wet (by leaving standing water in their saucers) which is even worse that letting them dry out. A nice, evenly moist soil is what we’re shooting for here. African Violets also like to be watered with tepid or room temperature water. Very cold water from the tap will shock them. When watering your African Violets, try not to get water on the leaves as this will result in an unsightly spotting. Some folks avoid this problem by pouring the water into a saucer placed under the pot. This is a fi ne method but make sure to drain any water that isn’t soaked up after a few minutes to avoid death from drowning.

I like to feed my African violets Jack’s Classic Boloom booter or other high phosphorus food at one-quarter strength every time I water to keep them healthy and fl owering. Wait until your violets are potbound before repotting. They will fl ower more if they feel a bit confi ned. Always put African Violets into shallow plastic or ceramic pots. Clay or terra cotta pots dry too quickly to be benefi cial to African Violets.

If you keep your house cooler than 64 degrees at night, you may have trouble keeping Af-rican Violets. A better choice for the cooler home would be a cousin of the African Violet, the Cape Primrose or Streptocarpus. Streptocarpus has the same indirect light requirement as African Violets but can tolerate temperatures as low as 50 degrees at night without ill effects. Like African Violets, Streptocarpus like to be kept evenly moist but is much more forgiving of accidental dryness. With moderate care, a Streptocarpus will thrive and fl ower for years. Unlike African Violets, Streptocarpus can get quite large if transplanted into larger size pots.

If you really like to save money by keeping your thermostat turned down, there’s still a fl owering plant option for your home….the Cyclamen. These tuberous plants thrive when nighttime temperatures drop below 60 degrees and prefer daytime temperatures that stay below 65 degrees. Keep your Cyclamen barely moist (never soggy). During the fl owering period, feed with a ¼ strength solution of Miracle-Gro. If you can manage not to overwater your Cyclamen, it should be able to maintain a set of its unique inverted fl owers for over three months!

If your house is very dry and you want to provide a little extra humidity, place the plants in a gravel-fi lled tray and add water to the top of the gravel. Place your plants on the gravel so the evaporating moisture passes over the leaves. Be sure the pots are not actually sitting in the water. Remember, nothing kills a plant quicker than drowning. Thanks for the read.
