Life of Kamen

Dean Kamen

Personal Life

Born on April 5, 1951 in Rockville Centre, New York

Disliked school and devoted to self-studyHired by local rock bands and museums to

graduating high school

Education

Attended Worcester Polytechnic Institute in Massachusetts but was kicked out after five years because he didn’t have enough credits for graduation

After leaving school, he continued working on his inventions

He was later awarded an honorary PhDFormed his own company in 1982: DEKA

Research & Development Corporation

For Inspiration and Recognition of Science and Technology

•Founded in 1989 to promote science for children

•Ran his first robotics competition in a New Hamphire high school gym with 28 teams

•Holds regional and international competitions

• Provides over 1,000 schools tools for valuable engineering skills

FIRST

The Segway

Invented in 2001 It’s the first self-balancing and electric

powered transportation deviceUses 5 gyroscopes and 2 computers to

operate No brakes, can go about 12 mph, and

the speed and direction are all controlled by user

Can fit in most trunks and is very quiet3 different models: the I-series, E-

series, and P-series Costs range from $5,000-$6,000

How the Segway Works

Kamen’s development team has called the technology used in the Segway as “Dynamic Stabilization”

Designed to basically emulate the process of human walking

Has a electric motor that is powered by batteries

Its balance comes from dual computers, two tilt sensors, five gyroscopes, and a speed limiting device

Uses• It can be used to travel around swiftly without pollution

•Can travel across all terrain

•Customizable to fulfill a wide range of activities

•Used by disabled people to enhance mobility

•Play sports with it (Segway Polo)
