First Travel Abroad
Secret Mission of Dr. Jose P. Rizal
To observe keenly the life and culture, language and
customs, industries and commerce, and government
laws of the European nations in order to prepare
himself for the mighty task of liberating his oppressed people from Spanish Tyranny.
On May 3, 1882 : Rizal departed on board the steamer bound for Singapore;

On Board the Steamer:16 Passengers, including Rizal himself :

Rizal was the only Filipino, the rest were;

On May 8, 1882 : The steamer Salvadora was approaching Singapore where Rizal saw a beautiful island.

Sir Stamford Raffles' Statue, sculpted by Thomas Woolner, is a popular icon of Singapore.
The statue depicts Raffles, standing tall, arms folded, with an aura of quiet assurance.
It was installed on Jubilee Day on 27th day of June 1887.
On May 11, 1882: Dr. Jose Rizal left for Europe on board the French Steamer;

On May 17, 1882: Djemnah reached ;
POINT GALLE Galle is a major city of Ceylon(Sri Lanka).
Rizal wrote;
“The general appearance of Point Galle is picturesque but lonely and quiet and at the same time sad.”
On May 18, 1882: Djemnah reached ;
COLOMBORizal wrote;
“Colombo is more beautiful, smart and elegant than Singapore, Point Galle, and Manila.”
From Colombo: Djemnah crossed the ;

CAPE OF GUARDAFUIAlso known as Ras Asir and historically as Aromata Promontorium, is a headland in the northeastern Bari province of Somalia.
Rizal wrote;
“Inhospitable land but famous.”
CITY OF ADENAden is a seaport in Yemen located by the eastern approach to the Red Sea some 110 miles east of Bab-el-Mandeb.
Rizal discovered that Aden is hotter than Manila, but was amazed by the existence of Camels.
CITY OF SUEZ “Suez is a seaport city in northeastern EGYPT located on the north coast of the Gulf of Suez.”
Suez has three(3) harbors;1. Adabya2. Ain Sokhna3. Port Tafwig
“Rizal was impressed on the beautiful moonlight that reminded him of Calamba.”
SUEZ CANAL“Is an artificial sea-level waterway in Egypt, connecting the Mediterranean Sea and the Red Sea.
Opened in November 17, 1869. After 10 years of construction work, it allows transportation by water between Europe andAsia without navigation around Africa.
When first built, the canal was 164 km long and 8 m deep. After multiple enlargements, the canal is 193.30 km long, 24 m deep and 205 m wide as of 2010.”
It took five(5) days for Djemnah to traverse the canal.
Ferdinand de Lesseps“Ferdinand Marie, Vicomte de Lesseps (19 November 1805 – 7 December 1894)
He was the French (diplomat/ engineer) developer of the Suez Canal, which joined the Mediterranean and Red Seas in 1869, and substantially reduced sailing distances and times between the West and the East.”
PORT SAID “Is a city that lies in north east Egypt extending about 30 kilometers along the coast of the Mediterranean Sea, north of the Suez Canal, with an approximate population of 603,787 (2010).”

On June 11, 1882: Djemnah proceeded its way to Europe and reached ;
NAPLES “Is the capital of Campania and the third-largest municipality in Italy, after Rome and Milan.
As of 2012, around 960,000 people live within the city's administrative limits. “
MT. VESUVIUS“Is a stratovolcano in the Gulf of Naples, Italy, about 9 kilometers east of Naples and a short distance from the shore.”
CASTLE OF ST. TELMO“Is a historical edifice in Seville, southern Spain, now the seat of the presidency of the Andalusian Autonomous Government.”

On June 12, 1882: Djemnah docked at the French harbor;
MARSEILLESThe site of the Old Port of Marseille.
Original settlers set up a trading post or Emporion in the hills on the northern shore.

On June 16, 1882: Rizal finally reached his destination;

“Rizal thought that the place was ugly, with dirty little inns, and inhospitable residents.”
