NOTES TO THE NATHIONAL TEAM OF COSTA RICA:

José Luis Pinto has been changing the team systems over the last 11 games analyzed, which has varied depending on the opponent, the classification in the group and the result of the match.

DEFENSIVE ASPECTS:

In their last game against Panama, they played a 1-4-2-3-1, although in the latter part of the Central American Cup matches (final and semifinal), they returned to use 5 on the back, already used against Mexico and El Salvador in the latest games of the 3rd Qualifying Round.

In some games, they made PRESSING to the goalie kick, although not together (Vid.1). If they lose in the offensive phase, we can note that in ATTACK-DEFENSE TRANSITIONS:

-It's a team that usually presses after the loss with the players that are close. It is often a pressing that can sometimes be intense in those first few seconds after the loss, but not very organized or coordinated. Depending on the area of the pitch, one of the defensive midfielders can go to that defensive pressure aggressively and recovering good balls for counterattacks. If they aren’t effective in those first moments and the other team gets out of their pressure, they catch them with a very tilting defensive system and with many spaces between lines.

-Normally they will have the 2 defensive midfielders to accompany the back defender line to abort counterattacks. The defensive midfielders usually goes to the side of the pitch to help their teammates, so they neglect their position in the midfield (Vid.7).

-If the side defenders were under attack, they recover their position very quickly, because they are hardworking and disciplined. -The wingers have many problems to regain their position in these plays and sometimes, they need a lot of time to recover their defensive position to help their teammates. Depending the player, you need more or less time (Vid.7-8-9 ).

-The forwards do not participate if they are overcome and recover the position for a possible counterattack. -Sometimes they can maintain a passive position, with the intention of timing, but if the opponent can find a throw pass, they can overwhelm that first line of pressure and find good spaces to counterattack (Vid.3-4).

SCOUTING COSTA RICA

Page 43: Report of costa rica's national team

However, we can say that it’s a team that’s looks for retreat and then go to make the pressure (Vid.2).

In this POSITIONAL DEFENSE we can comment:

As we have said, They have changed the defensive system, as needed:

They have played a 1-5-3-2 (Vid.10), in the first game against Mexico in the 3rd Round, or a 1-5-4-1 (Vid.12) in the second game against them. They also used this provision against El Salvador in the W.5 (also in the final minutes of the games of the semifinal and at final of the Central American Cup), and lately they are using a 1-4-2-3-1 (Vid.11), for the entire Central American Cup and the first game of this 4th Round against Panama.

The cover system varies depending on the defensive system used (defense of 4 or 5 at the back), but we note the following features:

-They shift in excess (Vid.15), with both defending systems, 4 or 5 at the back (it’s more accentuated with 4 in the back). -If the attack is in the middle, the two sides defender players, close to the center, leaving the band free. -The side fullbacks and center defenders (especially with 5 at the back) follow the marks and spaces left behind. -The last line of defense has problems to work together, especially when they play 5 at the back (Vid.12-13). -They can advance their last defender line and let the opponent put balls to the back of it. -Allow indoor or receive throw passes between the lines (Vid.10-14), because sometimes the center defenders don’t follow their marks, and the defending midfielders also go to make pressure to the opponent with the ball. -The defensive midfielders usually go to the side of the pitch to help their side fullbacks, so they neglect their position in the midfield (as it happens at the attack-defense transitions). -The wingers sometimes neglect their duties (especially if C.Bolaños, B.Ruiz are playing), but instead may be eligible to receive for the counterattacks. -The strikers aren’t usually involved in the defense, especially once the ball has passed them. -The back defender line stops at the box and has problems when the other team plays short or make 2vs1 (Vid.15). -They are a strong team in the front aerial balls, but they had problems defending the crosses and the aerial balls from the sidelines, specially at the second goal post (Vid.16-17).

SCOUTING COSTA RICA

-They can be a very tough and aggressive team, as in some Central American Cup matches, but they play correctly against México as well as in the last game against Panama.

At the RIVAL GK GOAL KICK DEFENSE is the defensive midfielder who tries to play the ball leaving the back defensive line in coverage (Vid.18). He receives help from the another defensive midfielder, but the other players in the midfield don’t help so much, so may be problems in the second plays.

If they play with 5 on the back, one of the center back defenders can be the one that fights for the ball (Vid.19).

In these plays they bring forward the defensive line, so there are spaces at the back to hurt them.

Finally, at the DIRECT PLAY we can comment that they had some problems to win those second plays (Vid.19-20), and that sometimes, they can defend those plays only with the back defense line and the 2 defensive midfielders (Vid.20).

OFFENSIVE ASPECTS:

They usually do the GOAL KEEPERS KICK long, although in some games they did it short, despite attempts of pressure from the opponent (like for example against Mexico).

If they do it short, the center defenders open their positions, the side fullbacks open the pitch and go to advance positions next to the half way line, one of the defensive midfielders (or both) come close to the box to give passing lines and the wingers go to the inside positions in the offensive pitch. The reference in attack is the striker and the link-up player: Both of them provide passing lines (Vid.21).

If they do it long, they look for the center forward (A. Osorio, usually) to dispute and thereafter make his offensive play and end (Vid.22) .

If they do it short, usually the central defenders don’t try to throw passes and prefer to pass the ball to the midfielders or to their side fullbacks, and they are the ones that play and start the attack.

In their POSITIONAL ATTACKING game include:

-Their plays are known for being very direct sometimes, not very elaborate and quickly look for the completion of the play (Vid.23).

-Preferably looking for by crosses (Vid.27). These crosses can come by wingers and their 1vs1, trying to make the cross or by the side fullbacks that go forward to attack, as a winger.

SCOUTING COSTA RICA

Page 45: Report of costa rica's national team

-Normally the wingers tend into the pitch and the defensive side fullbacks are the ones that occupy their position, thereby, many times, the defender wingers make the crosses. -In their positional play they use a lot of diagonal long-range passes to change the orientation of the play and to make the crosses (Vid.23-26).

-They can also look for the striker or the link-up player that moves to the side of the pitch (Vid.24-25), to link-up with them and then try the end the play.

-They tend to reach the end of the play with enough players (3-4) and provide pass line in front of the area, especially by the more offensive midfielder (by surprise and creating much danger) (Vid.28).

Referring to the PLAYERS, we can comment: -Both GKP can look for a long-range pass when they block the ball, they are very good doing this long-range passes with their feet. -The side fullbacks go forward to attack constantly highlighting the left fullback B.Oviedo and C.Meneses. Very quickly the latter and more quality the first. -We can highlight the midfielder defender C.Borges (Vid.28-29-30-37), a player that usually goes forward to the attacking positions, and with a very good outside shot. The rest are rather more defensive players than offensive. -In the wingers, highlight C.Bolaños (Vid.31), a very fast player, skillful and always looking for an opportunity to shot, and B.Ruiz, who often leave the side to go to link-up position and use their technical quality to search a throw pass for the striker to ends the play (Vid.3 1). -J.Arrieta is a second striker with great mobility, good vision and who likes to assists (Vid.32). -O.Rodriguez is a player who has played at the wing but that is more like a link-up player. -J.Campbell is a very fast player who was used without much success as a solo striker (Vid.36) , but has been a good addition when played along with A.Osorio. -A.Osorio undoubtedly is the reference in attack (Vid.33). Very good player, helps the team with his presence fighting all the long-range passes from the defenders, break in behind the defenders with timing, always ready to shoot on goal (Vid.29) and with a very good header on the ball. As previously stated, the objective of this positional attack is primarily to move the ball to the offensive sides to look for the cross or also shoot from outside of the box.

However, Costa Rica is also a team that can use a lot the DIRECT PLAY (Vid.33), especially when they are losing a game or are not confortable playing the ball at the defender line.

SCOUTING COSTA RICA

Page 46: Report of costa rica's national team

In these situations always look for the striker with a long-range pass , so he can fight for the ball and look for the continuation of the play.

They can be dangerous in this type of game especially since C.Bolaños, J.Campbell, J.Arrieta tend to be very attentive to these second plays. Finally, regarding DEFENSE-ATTACK TRANSITIONS we note that it is a very dangerous team when he steals in the rivals building zone and seeks to pass the ball to the center forward in the first instance (Vid.36). In these situations, and if A.Osorio is playing, they usually create much danger as he breaks the defender line so very well and ends well (Vid.6-34).

If these transitions are bit longer, 2-3 players are rapidly joining, and occasionally C.Borges reaching the end zone by surprise and creating much danger (Vid.37). They also can do this transitions after their GKP blocks a cross (Vid.35) .

STRATEGY It is a team with good players who head the ball well, but that does not prepare their strategic moves and only rely on the ability of their players to break the opposition of the defenders and in the quality of the players that makes the set pieces.

We highlight: A.Osorio, G.Gonzalez, C.Borges, B.Ruiz as good headers.

Defensive Strategy:

-Free kicks cross (Vids.-4-5).

They have, usually, 1-2 in the barrier, 0-1 to the short play, 1-2 to the second plays, 5-6 players in line at the height of the edge of the penalty area, that follows the attackers when they go inside the box and 0-1 for output and the counterattack.

They can make zone defense (as against Mexico) or 1vs1 defense (as against Panama)

They don’t hold the line pretty well and they give many options.

-Corner (Vids.-6-7-8-9-10-11-12-13).

They usually have 2 in the area near the post into the goal area, in zone defense (1 in the post of the first goal post) 5 make individual marking to the opponents, 1-2 to the second plays and 1-2 for output and the counterattack.

If the opponent play short with 2, they usually defend this situations with the 1 that was at the post of the first goal post and the 1 of the second plays that is close to them or the other player in the area that was on zone defense the near post.

-Throw in.

They defend in zone (Vids.14-15), but have blind spots and can defend almost only with the players of the defensive line and the 2 defender midfielder. They tilt too much and had difficulties in this type of strategy (Vid.-16)

SCOUTING COSTA RICA

Page 48: Report of costa rica's national team

Offensive strategy: -Free Kick Cross (Vids.18-19-20-21-22): Normally they use only 1 player to do the kick shot (C.Bolaños, J.Campbell), they go with 5 to try to finish the play, 2-3 for the second plays, out of the box and 1-2 stay in defense (sometimes a player in between the ones that stay in defense and the ones that are out of the box for the second plays). There aren’t blockades and rely more on the individual capacity of the player that does the cross and the movements of the attacking players to get away from the defenders. At the long distance free kick cross (Vid.-23) they usually play long-range diagonal passes and they typically put two players in there to head-in the ball into the center of the penalty area. -Corner (Vids.-24-25-26-27-28): Normally they use only 1 player to do the kick shot (C.Bolaños), and they go with 5-6 to try to finish the play, 2-3 for the second plays, out of the box and 1-2 stay in defense (sometimes a player in between the ones that stay in defense and the ones that are out of the box for the second plays). As in the free kick cross, they have made many direct kick, relying on the individual capacity of the player that does the cross and the movements of the attacking players to get away from the defenders. (No blocks have been made). Preferably, they look for kick crosses or moves to the far post. But they have also made elaborate plays on corner kicks, including the first goal against Panama. (Vids.29-30-31) -Throw-in (Vids.32-33-34): They tried to return to make a cross, especially to the far goal post.
