SOCIABLE DESIGN

The idea for an 'anti suburbia' eco community was borntwenty years ago when Samasati got its start as a one-of-a-kind combination Eco-Retreat, Bio-Reserve and YogaRetreat - the first in the Caribbean of Costa Rica.

Samarcanda Gated Community and the Samasati Retreatwas the first resort built by outsiders that was not locateddirectly on the ocean; instead, the backdrop is a magicalrainforest, perched on a mountain ridge overlooking theCaribbean Sea.

The plan is to provide a sense of community with homesbuilt in natural settings and then connecting with theResort property in the center.

Samarcanda Gated Community and Samasati Retreatwas constructed with incredible care for the integrity ofits natural environment, using no heavy equipment formoving land. Its water systems are drawn from theecosystem's natural rainwater and are recycledthroughout the property.

Samarcanda Gated Community was designed on sacred geometryprinciples, with building lots clustered along serpentine-like formsfitted to the undulations of the land. This requires minimal landdisturbances and allows the community to reserve large areas ofundeveloped green space.

Homes are connected by looping country roads and a network ofwell-worn foot paths that make walking enjoyable.

Samarcanda Gated Community features 30 home sites; 21 lots, whichare available for sale with a price range of $50,000 to $80,000.

Samarcanda Gated Community is the only project in the heart of theSouth Caribbean Rainforest that is based on a sustainable development. Encompassing home property sites for sale, ranging from0.5 to 2 acres, with its own water springs, it is a prime location forsustainable and independent living.

Interview with Home Owners -

Steve and Gina Caputo

Q: How did you decide to buy at Samarcanda? ... and, why did youdecide to buy a property on the mountain?

The story is that we were at Samasati on vacation for two weeks. I wasin a yoga class ... I've never done yoga before. We were at the end ofour vacation and my husband was at the restaurant, and while I was inclass he was telling Lucie (the Samasati manager at that time) that wewould come back and how we completely fell in love with this areaand the Samasati Retreat.

So she said, " Well, Steve come with me!" And she walked me up thehill to lot 47 and said, "This is for sale and you should buy it."

Aer I came out of yoga class, he brought me out there, and we lookedand talked about it. Our decision did not take long!

We say this to other people: We bought with our hearts, because weloved being there in that environment at the top of the hill with thecool breeze in the middle of the jungle - but also feeling secure.

We also liked the idea of being able to walk to yoga in the morning andto hike around the property. It was a pretty spur-of-the-momentpurchase for buying a lot and building a house so far away from wherewe live now ... but it turned out well.

Q: Did you think about buying closer to the beach?

No, because we love living up the hill and we liked the views, breeze andthe security. And we knew we were going to be part of a communitywith cool people. The restaurant was a real nice place for us when wefirst stayed in the bungalows. I think that was a draw too. Peoplecoming to the restaurant from different walks of life. That was good forus.

Q: Now that you have the house, what is the thing that you like themost?

One thing that we love, is our deck! If you sit there quietly in thehammock, or you're sitting in the chair reading, the jungle comes toyou. We have seen everything from that deck, Toucans and all kinds ofbirds, sloths and monkeys. And I think that being in the forest, havingthat feeling when we sit at our deck, it's just amazing, and then lookingout at the view over the water...

Interview with Chris and Adela Redstone

Q: How did you decide to buy land in Costa Rica?

We went to the Samasati Retreat as the first stop on ourhoneymoon tour of Costa Rica, and stayed there for five days.We happened to see "our" house (the one we bought) on the lastaernoon of our stay, and just fell in love with it. It was not onlyour honeymoon, but also Valentine's Day and a full moon, so wekind of saw the house as a gi from the universe and decided thereand then that we should buy it!

Q: What is the thing you like the most about owning propertyat Samarcanda ?

The most important thing is that we "part-own"and protect theamazing rainforest that surrounds the properties.

Anyone considering buying a lot there really needs to be a"rainforest protector" at heart, as without the SamarcandaCommunity, this forest would almost certainly be under threat.

We would welcome more people into the Community who loverainforests and nature, and are passionate about conservation.Conservation is at the heart of what Samarcanda is all about, and what makes this different from any other holiday property.

Q: What are your feelings about the area in general?

We love the Caribbean Coast, which is much less developed than thePacific Coast and has its own Caribbean culture, people, food and vibe. There is reggae, little home-run restaurants and deserted beaches. Thearea is currently going through quite a lot of changes, with a new airportplanned at Limon, and a new highway.

Q: What are your plans for the future?

As we are from the UK, we want to use our new home to get out of theharsh English winters.

Interview with Marisela

Q: Marisela, how did you decide to buy at Samarcanda?

I had already decided to buy in the area. Knowing the whole countryand having some family in Limon, I knew that it was were I wanted tobuy a property. We worked with a real estate agent to see propertiesand Samasati was not on my radar screen. And then, once when wewere driving back to San Jose, we saw the sign, Samasati Retreat.

Our attorney had mentioned it to us so we decided to come up and seethe properties. It was an impulse. As soon as I stepped on the hill andsaw the view... I fell in love. Actually, before, when I was driving up theroad, looking at the vegetation and the trees and the nature, I thoughtthis is amazing! This is it.

I had seen a lot of properties in the area and I just dreamed of havingthe view of the ocean and being on top of a mountain. More thananything, I fell in love with the place itself. Being on the mountain, looking at the ocean, driving up the hill... I found it really charming—allof it.

Q: How is it...having the experience ofhaving the house there now?

Oh my God! Well, I can tell you honestly that it is my refuge. It is like myheart and soul live there. Every time I am not there, I want to be there. The experience is so beautiful. When it is rainy, when it is sunny andbeautiful, when the clouds come in, when I hear the monkeys, when Isee the birds, every second is just so beautiful up there!

Right now... I close my eyes and I think about sitting on the deck lookingat the water or looking at the rain or looking at all of it! I just love it all.It is funny I did not know what it was going to be like. I did not knowthen, the experience of life on top of the hill.

Q: What would you say to somebody who would like to buy?

Samarcanda Gated Community and Samasati Retreat is safe andsecure. I did not want to live with the feeling that people can break intomy house... and that can happen when you do not live constantly in thehouse when you live abroad.

The fact that we are surrounded by a biological reserve guarantees thatthe nature and environment will stay as it is – there will not be"development."

I can't minimize the fact that we are close to the retreat center. When Iretire I will go four times a week to do yoga! Just having options to doyoga... options to get a massage! And it means that people who arearound us are kind!
