Old vs. NewArchitecture

Modern parts of Morocco have been increasing in the past years. More standard block buildings that loose the effect of the traditional Moroccan architecture. Moroccan architecture oozes with tradition and culture from centuries ago. Structures with arch ways and courtyards, lots of gold and embellishments. These roots however can also be seen in some of the new modern architecture done today.

Orgins of Architecture

•The architecture in Morocco is a blend of Black African and Islamic designs. (Mostly Islamic)•Examples of this would be the extravagant gardens, decorations, and the deep contrasting colors used.•Also the architecture relates to the geography of Morocco: the high palace walls for desert protection. This is also a way for them to continue decorating by using the inside of the walls to elaborate.

•Dominant characteristics in Moroccan buildings:• Large, intimidating archways topped with beautiful domes• Courtyards• Extravagant gardens• The use of calligraphy to decorate instead of pictures.• Vibrant colors

Unique buildingsto visit in Morocco

•The Mohammed V Mausoleum: A royal mausoleum, a structure of white marble was added in 1967, providing an icon of post-independence Morocco.•The Royal Palace: The Royal Palace, official residence of the King of Morocco, it is an enormous building constructed on top of the ruins of an 18th century palace.•The Kasbah des Oudaias: an old Kasbah, named after an ancient tribe that came to defend the city of Rabat.•Morocco has been able to maintain the richness of their traditions and culture. Each building is unique and different. To see the architecture there, so different than anything we see in the United States is very interesting and amazing to witness.
