The island of Zakynthos, also called Zante (its Italian name), is the third largest island in the Ionian Sea, located off the west coast of Greece. The Venetians Fiori di Levante (flower of the East), Zakynthos or Zante, is famed worldwide not only for its natural beauty but also for the turtle Caretta caretta. A series of measures have been adopted by the Greek legislation in order to protect the Caretta-Caretta and the National Marine Park of Zakynthos (Zante) is now well established.

Aici se gsesc broatele estoase Caretta-Caretta i focile Monachus-Monachus.

The loggerhead sea turtle known as the Caretta-Caretta has become an endangered specie that can only be found in the Mediterranean Sea.This turtle can reach 1,2 metres length and can weight until 100 kg.

An airport has even been built near the beach of Laganas where many female turtles used to lay their eggs. Every year, sea turtles are injured by motorboats and many sandy beaches are destroyed; a lot of turtles are dying from the fishing nets and from the growing pollution of the sea.

The Society for the Turtle Protection in association with the Greek Ministry of Environment have made a list of simple regulations that will help the protection of the Caretta-Caretta and that every visitor of the island should take in consideration. During the nights of June and August, the female turtle looks for a dry part of some sandy beach to lay her eggs in a hole 40 to 60 centimeters deep. Two months later, the hatchlings come out of the egg and their sandy nest and return to the sea.The surviving female turtles will return twenty to thirty years later to their natal beach to lay their eggs like their mothers did before them. The turtles where leading a peaceful existence in the waters and beaches of Zakynthos but the extension and growth of touristy industry has interrupted their natural rhythms: many of them disappeared and the specie is now under direct threat.

The island of Marathonissi is a small island south of the larger island of Zakynthos. It is situated in the National Marine Park of Zakynthos in the bay of Laganas

Small island in front of Laganas harbour, it is connected to the mainland with a wooden bridge enlightened at night. In the past it was connected to Zakynthos island then, because of an earthquake, it became a peculiar small island, final destination of many tourists.

On the West cost Zakynthos offers one of its most stunning views: the blue caves. They are also known as the blue caves of Volimes, the picturesque village where they are located. The blue caves are only accessible by the sea. However, this fact has not stopped them from being one of the main attractions of this Greek island. The biggest cave is called Kianoun, and there are, in general terms, many boats available for rent in the town port for tourists to be able to get to the blue caves. The distinctive element of the blue caves is that they reflect the vibrating and striking blue colour of the waters in them, which at the same time capture and reflect the shine of the limpid sky reflected on their surface. This succession of bright reflection creates an almost magical atmosphere that is better appreciated at sunrise or sunset.

The Holy Monastery of Theotokos (Panagia) Anafonitria, dedicated to Virgin Mary, is a Byzantine monument with interesting architecture. It was founded in the middle of the 15th century, during the Venetian occupation of the island. In this Monastery, Agios Dionysios, the protector saint of Zakynthos, became a monk and lived the last years of his life in the 16th century.(The Navagio bay is 3 km northwest of Anafonitria). In byzantine times the miraculous icon of Our Virgin "Anafonitria was brought here from the captured Constantinople in 1453.
