Summa Technologiae
Ionian Islands
First edition of Stanisław Lem’s „Summa technologiae” was published in 1964 and it was an
attempt of philosophical approach to the civilizational and evolutional consequences of
technological development with particular emphasis to information technology. Many of the
issues brought in that publication were ahead of the concepts of western theorists combining
phenomena associated to information technology development with other disciplines (such as
evolutionistic concepts of Richard Dawkins or those from cognitive science of Marvin Minsky).
There are many ideas that can be named, such as comparative reflections on technology and
evolution, many notions defining new phenomena, that were later popularized in their western
equivalents, such as: teletaxy – telepresence, intelectronics – technological singularity,
fantomology – virtual reality. Many subjects addressed in this publication, considered then as
futurology, are currently up-to-date. “Summa technologiae” is the motto of this year’s edition of
the MEDEA International Symposium that intends to bring together physical scientists, social
scientists and artists, with the development and expansion of information technology as an
excuse for joint considerations about its impact on different disciplines and expansion of
multidisciplinary fields of interest between them.
The subjects of the MEDEA symposium are traditionally oscillating around issues located on the
borders of science, art and technology. The novelty of this year’s edition is a social sciences panel.
In reference to the location and current events this edition’s profile also includes phenomena
associated with the interpenetrations of cultural influences from different cultural regions.
In 1200 B.C. the kingdom of Odysseus with capital on the Ithaca island included other Ionian
Islands, such as: Cephalonia, Lefkada, Zakynthos, Echinades and also a part of Acarnania
bordering with Aetolia by the Achelous River. After a 10-years long Troyan War Odysseus started
a 10-year long return journey to his homeland. These events are described in the works of the so
called Epic Cycle, that included: Cypria, Iliad, Aethiopis, Little Iliad, Iliou persis, Nostoi, Odyssey
and Telegony, of wich only Iliad and Odyssey were preserved until our times.

Ionian emigration and the emergence of science
Zakynthos in the border of cultures
Zakynthos Island was a place of influence of many different cultures. In the course of time it
found itself in the zones of influence of Greece, also Macedonia, Roman Empire, Byzantine
Empire. In Byzantine times it was plundered by pirates and Vandals. In 1185 Zakynthos was
conquered by Sicilian Normans, who established County Palatine of Cephalonia and Zakynthos.
Afterwards it was conquered by the Republic of Venice and remained in its sphere of influence
untill 1797. After the signing of the Peace Treaty in Campio Formio it passes under the rule of
France. In the year 1799 after the signing of Russian-Turkish alliance and the deployment of united
fleet, the island was captured by Russian-Turkish forces. According to the Constantinople
Agreement from 1800 a Greek state was established in the Ionian Islands under Turkish
protectorate and Russian management. In 1807 the island passes once more to the French. In
1815 the British are appointing the United States of the Ionian Islands under their protectorate. In
1864 the Island of Zakinthos joins Greece after 680 years of foreign occupation.
The Joint Conferences MEDEA 2016 , ISLIC 2016, PTA 2016 and ROLLER POSTER in Zakintos will
take place on September 3-10 2016 in the Island of Zakynthos in Greece. The aim of this event is
the meeting of artists, scientists, technologists in the search of mutual interdisciplinary level of
discussion.
In VI and V centuries B.C., thanks to individuals such as Thales, Anaximander, Anaximenes,
Heraclitus, in Ionian cities on the coasts of Minor Asia philosophy emerged and build the
foundations of today's science. After the conquer of Ionia by Pershians in the middle of VI century
B.C. many Greeks emigrated to western colonies, to the so called Great Greece (southern part of
the Italian Peninsula and part of Sicily) with philosophers such as Xenophanes and Pythagoras
amongst them. Xenophanes was the ancestor of Eleatic School of Philosophy and Pythagoras was
the progenitor of Pythagorean Union. For Pythagoreans the most important substance of the
universe was not matter, but the form it aquires by the inscribed information. They perceived the
universe as buildt by numbers and explored its harmony. The names of the Ionian Sea and the
Ionian Islands comes from this early emigration.
