A standard video for the internet? Microsoft: Windows media (.wmv) Apple: Quicktime movies (.mov) Realplayer: Real media (.rm, .ra, .rv) Mpeg: towards a standard Adobe: Flash video (.flv) - the emerging

standard, used by players like Youtube

So there are different video file types, so what? …so sharing video between computer

users who use different operating systems (Windows, Macintosh, Linux) and different media players can get tricky

For example, if your video is in Quicktime format you won’t be able to play it using Windows Media Player

Adoption by internet users

Today, Adobe can claim that the Flash Player is on 97.3% of all of the internet-enabled computers in use today. Microsoft’s Windows Media Player is on 83% of computers, QuickTime is on about 66%, and Real is hovering at 56%.
