2. Renewable energy in Spain represented 12.5%of total energy generation in 2009. Spain hasset the target of generating 20% of its energyneeds from renewable energy sources by2020. 3. Some autonomous regions in Spain leadEurope in the use of renewable energytechnology, and plan to reach 100%renewable energy generation in a fewyears. Castilla y Leon and Galicia areespecially near this goal, producing in 200670% of their total electricity demand fromrenewable energy sources, and 5communities produce more than 50% fromrenewables. 4. WIND POWER INSPAIN 5. Spain is the worlds third biggestproducer of wind power, afterthe United States and Germany, withan installed capacity of 20,661megawatts (MW) april 2011, a rise of1,609 MW for the year. More than 11%of Spains electricity came from windpower in 2008. The largest producer ofwind power in Spain is Iberdrola, with27 percent of capacity, followedby Acciona on 16 percent and Endesawith 10 percent. 6. SOLAR ENERGY INSPAIN 7. In 2005 Spain became the first countryin Europe to require the installationof photovoltaic electricity generation innew buildings, and the second in theworld to require the installationof solar hot water systems. With theconstruction of the solar powerplant, located near Seville, Spainbecame the first country to ever have acommercial solar energy power tower.
