• Exchange of oxygen and carbon dioxide– Animals : breathe in oxygen, expels carbon dioxide– Plants: breathe in carbon dioxide, expels oxygen

What do animals need oxygen for?

Oxygen

• Burn ATP (adenosine triphosphate, energy giving molecule)

• Process expels carbon dioxide

In simple organisms…

• Respiration occurs between the organism and its immediate surrounding

In more complex organisms

In primates, specifically humans…

• External– Between the atmosphere and blood

• Internal– Between the blood and the body tissues
