The evolution of Microsoft SQL Server

“Master data is one of the most important types of information in an

organization, and the discipline of MDM is needed to ensure the consistency

of this data across the organization, and when managing relationships with

external constituents (customers, partners, suppliers, etc.). Mastering this data

is critical to maintaining process integrity, which is required for organizations to

maximize their chances of meeting their desired business outcomes.”

Performance and Scale Modeling and Management Security and Admin

Excel add-in4-8x perf increase for SQL Server 2012 and SQL

Server 2014. Up to 15x faster data loading in SQL

2016.

Entity based stagingLoading data into MDS is now 15-200% faster than

SQL Server 2014.

Model deploymentFaster deployment, and removed size limitations

when deploying models with data.

Custom indexesCreate non-clustered indexes on one or more

attributes to improve query performance.

Transaction log retentionConfigurable settings for retaining the MDS transaction

history table to enable automatic truncation.

Entity sync relationshipShare entities and data between models.

Many to many relationshipsCreate derived hierarchies that support many-to-many

relationships.

Attribute filtersFilter domain based attribute values based on another

attribute.

Business rule extensionsApply user defined SQL scripts as business rule

conditions and actions.

Explorer and Excel IntegrationAbility to open entity view in Excel add-in from Web

Explorer.

Granular security permissionsAllows permissions to be set around read, write, create,

and delete.

Multiple administrator rolesSupport for Super User and Model Admin roles allows for

multiple system administrators, and model level admins.

Smarter caching of permissionsReduces the overhead of adding member and attribute

level security settings.

Member revision history Track change history of members (type 2) through

specialized subscription view.

Change sets and approvalUse change sets to save pending changes.

Scenario: update vendor contacts

Demand

• Marketing manager Joe receives updated contact information for Sharp Bikes

• The contact information needs to be updated in MDS

Steps to accomplish

1. Check whether there are ongoing requests for the vendor

2. Create a new request to modify vendor data

3. Choose to modify global data to enable contact data edition

4. Maintain contact data and process the request

Demo highlights

Integrated Wiki

• Knowledge sharing from users to users

Request level commenting

• Possibility for participants to discuss the request

Field comments

• Highlighting problematic fields

• Provide reasoning and audit data

Collaborative filling

• Multiple users can work on the same request simultaneously

Locking

• Prevents two users from editing the same field

• Manual locking can be used by editor to ”reserve” a section for himself

Scenario: add status classification for vendor dataDemand

• Purchasing organization wants to easily see vendor status. Status is not currently part of Vendor master data in MDS

• Status is either New, Active, Blocked or Discontinued

• The status selection should be positioned under Basic information section on the vendor modification form

Steps to accomplish

1. Add data to MDS via Excel Add-In

2. Add the new attribute on the form as a select field by using MDS Wizard

3. Validate that the field is visible on the form and can be edited along with other global data

02/09/2016 www.bilot.fi 30

Demo highlights

Editing form and workflow is really easy

Business rules can be used to control whether a field is mandatory, visible and/or editable

MDS Wizard makes it really easy to fill a form section with fields fetched from MDS

Less development, more control!
