Future Land Use Themes Development Process

Staff solicited inputs to the question of “In terms of LAND USE between 2010 and 2040, the Miami Valley should …” (Phase I Wrap Up Meeting on April 15, 2009)

Committee members grouped the inputs into land use themes and name each group (Homework Assignment from the Phase I Wrap Up meeting)

Staff reviewed land use themes identified from the committee members Staff identified initial sets of common land use themes

Common Land Use Theme Definition Business as Usual Development

Future development at the same density and intensity as it has in the past and continues the less concentrated development pattern at the outskirts of existing urban areas

Infill/Conservation DevelopmentEncourages future development in existing urban areas, using existing infrastructure and underutilized land while discouraging development in natural resources areas

Asset-Based DevelopmentEmphasizes existing regional assets and encourages future development around these assets

Radial Corridor DevelopmentEncourages future development along existing transportation corridors, maximizing the use of existing roadways and transit networks

Unrestricted DevelopmentProvides for lower density development in undeveloped areas in the greenfields and exurbs

Overview

Acting as a planner during the next 80 minutes Mind mapping exercise - to solicit input on the principles and characteristics of each theme

Given the projected need for future population and job growth, in what ways should the Region invest the limited available resources?

Dot mapping exercise - to solicit input on the best areas for development for each theme

Given the projected need for future population and job growth, in what parts of the Region should the limited available resources be invested?

Ground Rules for Exercises

Treat each other with courtesy and respectListen to other points of viewFocus on the topic at handDisagree with ideas not with peopleAsk staff for assistance

Be mindful of the time limit!30 minutes for Mind Mapping exercise 50 minutes for Dot Mapping exercise

General Instruction: Mind Mapping Exercise

Designed to solicit input on the principles and characteristics of each themeUsing a template provided, provide your thoughts on the question of“Given the projected need for

future population and job growth, in what ways should the Region invest the limited available resources?”

Page 22: Phase II Kick Off Meeting Presentation

General Instruction: Dot Mapping Exercise

Designed to solicit input on the best areas for development for each theme Using a map template, Discuss and Distribute dots throughout the Region

90 Population dots Each dot = 250 people90 Employment dots Each dot = 250 jobs

Stay true to the theme to help guide the dot placementDots may be stacked to illustrate a higher densityUse various references provided for additional information to help identify the best area
